Harper is that person that seemed relatable, complex, smart and cool but actually is quite judgemental, bitter and bitchy whilst bitching about other women being bitchy. It seems nice on screen but in rl they are very hard to adjust and be around.
It’s like the character Wednesday and her weirdness that everyone is talking about….they are nice characters on screen but in rl everyone tries to avoid them.
Any character on season 2 can be argued as the best character. They were so well written and acted. I can’t think of another show that is so well rounded.
@@TwiCaCaX Yep Fleabag is a fantastic show but it focuses so much on one character. That's not a negative about the show but I was referring to the huge cast that covers two seasons on White Lotus where they share pretty equal coverage.
omg everyone in the comments needs to lighten up… she was my favorite character to watch!! that doesn’t mean she’s a great person, but damn she was entertaining and written so well.
Also, so many say she often ruined the conversation. But...what conversation? Everything was fake at those tables, Cameron and Daphne were insufferable.
To even speak the words “I don’t like her” when talking about this icon is a statement to her acting ability. I hope she gets an Emmy nom for this role imo.
I honestly relate to Harper (yes that might be a bad sign, I know). Some parts I don't, but for the most part, I understood that it's the context that drives her into being such a bitter, unlikable person. The failing marriage, her husband losing attraction towards her... these are actually very sad and painful for someone who care deeply, but it can be so hard to talk about (especially Ethan keeps pretending everything is fine, "he's just too busy" etc.) And so she channeled that into anger and resentment. She makes comments to kill the vibe of the group. She judges Daphne and Cameron behind, all because she is jealous inside, refusing to believe they are truly a happy couple - it has to be facade; or they are just so stupid so they can be happy. If she behaves like that when her relationship is fine then yes she is naturally a bitch. But in this context, it's more understandable. Not a very good personality, but I feel for her.
Harper was the shrewdest of the four. I dont’t think she cheated, but she wanted Ethan to think she could have if she had wanted to. Given the dynamic with Ethan/Cameron, on some level she knew that if Ethan thought Cameron wanted her, then Ethan would want her, too. By cheating with Daphne, Ethan punished Harper for something she didn’t do.
Yes, I could also see Harper possibly taunting her husband as well. I don't know I guess I can see both sides of her cheating or not. Once again the writer did a great job creating her character.
thats the thing, i feel our perception on wether ethan/harper rly did cheat with daphne/cameron or not is rly open ended, like its definitely left on us to think wether they actually did it or not, just like ethan and harper perceiving each other on wether they actually did or not, and with that thought constantly in the back of their mind, their desire for each other comes back and surprisingly fixes their relationship. its kind of messed up in a way if u think about it but the way its written is rly well done
I never watched this show but does she actually cheat? I do remember seeing a scene of her making out on a table with a different man but it looked like it was in Ethan’s imagination. Did she actually cheat or no?
@@zomeister8367 The visual of it was his imagination. But whether she actually did is not clear. To me, this show is built around people making these tragic mistakes that were entirely avoidable. And it's somehow more tragic, to me, if Harper didn't cheat but Ethan did.
@@brianmacdonald4486 so Ethan actually cheated? Sorry I don’t know anything about this show I have literally just been watching scenes through RU-vid shorts
I don’t know if anybody else sees this in white lotus but I sort of feel like the people who are right are also wrong and the people who are wrong are also right and that what makes the show so brilliant
Harper was so unbearable to me. Which is ironic considering I definitely have more in common with her and Ethan in terms of social issues. But I couldn’t stand her constant condescending tone. Like lighten up girl! You’re in Italy on vacation!
I could understand, she didn’t have the greatest attitude but as the show goes on we get to fully understand why she acts the way she does. She did phenomenal!
Harper was definitely a complex character. I liked her very much at the beginning of the series but she showed a very different side toward the end through her active 50/50 involvement with Cameron, all the while rubbing her husband's face i it and making him feel like the fool. I thought that that she was downright sadistic toward him and , given all of the factors and details of her behavior toward Cameron from the morning she saw Ethan talking to the hookers, she definitely had sex of some sort with him in the room. Look at her facial expressions toward Cameron in virtually every scene after seeing the hookers--constant flirting and approval of his fondling her under the table. Then there were the constant strings of lies toward her husband ( the same as Cameron 's) with her seemingly enjoying his pain. All of this was behavior was portrayed sooo realistically by Aubrey Plaza's superb acting--she really seemed like someone who was lying.
Agreed, she was my favorite character in the beginning but then as the season started to progress so did her actions. I do believe something went down with her and Cameron. All in all, I enjoyed this season probably more than the first and can't wait to see what the creator has in store for us in season 3 (hopefully)!
I mean you have to look at it from her side, it's no wonder she thought he cheated and lied about bc everything was indicating he did with his constant trickle truthing. She only cheated with Cameron to get back at Ethan for the cheating she believed he did, but then Ethan did the same exact thing with Daphne. He was convinced Harper was unfaithful so he coped with it by imitating Cameron & Daphne's toxic back and forth of punishing each other for their respective transgressions without ever communicating honestly about them.
@@edithputhy4948 Yes, if Harper did what we all thought she did (sadly) I did see it from her POV. Meaning she didn't see what we saw which was the fact that Ethan was honestly telling the truth. It doesn't mean that she should've done what she possibly did, only that it makes sense why she did it- possibly (and same goes for Ethan's scenario in the end).
@@deannas2778 Yes--and very cruel. Ethan's sin was horrible communication before she cheated with Cameron. It was especially cruel because it was with Cameron--knowing that his goal in life was to always humiliate and hurt her husband. It would be more forgivable if she slept with a stranger imo.
@@noobatron2663 everyone has flaws. Her flaws don’t seem to be so depicted that much in other media. Yes she’s condescending and intolerant but that does come from a place that’s at least a little justified. And yes she’s critical and insecure but that’s a trait she shares with everyone
I think we all know a Daphne and Harper, just like a Cameron and Ethan. In my life I think it was my mom was a Harper light when younger while my aunt--my dad's sister in law--played the Daphne character. My mom was always very critical of my aunt and her family about them casually boasting about their family accomplishments--and it helped they had some wealth. My aunt also had that light auburn, reddish hair. My mom had dark brown hair just like Harper. My aunt is also a social butterfly, bubbly, friendly, somewhat carefree (became a housewife) and attending every party she could--didn't really talk deeply about serious issues. My mom was social too but not to the same degree. She was more practical and was a working woman. Cameron is really any straight man in his 20s. Ethan is really almost any successful college grad Asian man.
@Big Tuna I did it merely because of pure uncanny coincidence how the characters personalities and rough look line up in real life in my family. Of course hair colors don't have to match up in real life to know you know both of these personalities. Thankfully though that's where the similarities with characters ends. My dad and his brother were never competitive like the guys, and my mom and aunt were more level headed at the end of the day.
I think Harper was an amazing character, I don't think she cheated she hated him and all he represented. She wanted her husband to have sex with her... My god. Yes she was incredibly sadistic to her husband. Being nice to him and trying to talk to him wasn't getting anywhere.
Sadistic? She was, quite reasonably, disappointed with her husband, but stayed with him in the hope that things would return to a better state. I thought she was pretty restrained with Ethan, given where they were in their relaitonship. She just wasn’t going to stand for even less from him.
She really just didn’t want to be on vacation with them. I get that she was rude sometimes, but it was supposed to be her downtime and she ended up spending it around people she just didn’t relate to or like very much.
I related to her when she talks about how he's not attracted to her anymore. I've definitely had that argument with my guy before.... Almost the exact same one like the whole "you'd rather watch p*** then have sex with me."
I was rooting for her. I think the increasing lack of passion combined with her new money status via Ethan made her feel like her position as his wife was precarious. Ethan also lied first and kissed Mia so I enjoyed her manipulating him into spiralling. She was being mean and judgemental out of insecurity. She is just the type that needs to actively foster her own joy and choose to vibrate high when she isn't working.
Aubrey was good as an actor -- but Daphne was more naturally assumed by that actress. I thought Cam was good actor; Ethan was very well cast, though. Porsche rocked her role. Imperioli was amazing and F Murray Abraham hit it out of the park...and Quentin was an incredible acting job. Tom Holland. Whoa...
It's interesting how the husbands (Cam and Ethan) were both played by British actors (although of Japanese and Greek Heritage), as was Quentin and his "nephew".
Honestly, Aubrey made this character likable, otherwise I don’t think I would’ve liked her very much, haha. She seemed like such a downer and a party pooper but somehow Aubrey made her less unbearable to watch. What a great actress
Daphne is definitely an icon, her telling Harper about intentionally triggering her husband's FOMO and abandonment issues with her chipper demeanor had me 💀
her worst??? this whole video is why i love her shes a very specific type of personality shes not a bad person but she approaches social scenarios awkwardly sometimes and thats something i found really relatable she cracks me up too
I liked her but god would she be scary and annoying to be around; Cam and Daphne’s main gripe with her was that she just wasn’t very nice, which is fair!
Harper seems like someone without the ability to be introspective or reflect on their own flaws. Easily my last favorite character. Just someone who puts people down because it makes her feel better. No emotional intelligence whatsoever
Viewing her from a neurodivergent perspective, she comes across as an autistic person who is tired of masking and just says/does what she truly feels. Sure she's not a good person, but no one on this show is, so it's useless trying to categorize every character as either a hero or villain, because people are waaaay more complex than that
Harper was truly awful. Ruining every single conversation and being an early stage Karen to everyone she met. The way she was searching for something wrong with Daphne and Cameron’s marriage just to make herself feel better was pathetic.
Harper was my LEAST favorite in terms of likability, but her interactions with the other more vapid couple was really entertaining. In real life, she would be the LAST person on earth to go on vacation with, talk about a buzz kill.
