Well, it is the speciality of baroque French composers to clarify everything. Their music is always chrystal clear....not exactly like the Germans who tend to wander too much.....

I love this piece!! I skipped all my work and haven't played anything else like for 2 days - like 4-5 hours every day.. And I don't get bored at all!! :) What a joy to play that just using one keyboard.. Thanks to Mr. Sokolov, I'm discovering right now the old baroque masters - Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti etc.. after years and years playing just Bach, Im totally amazed how "forward" those guys were in writing music.. Now I understand why this became such a source of inspiration for Ravel etc..

I'm a pianist and for years I've enjoyed listening to this piece performed by excellent harpsichordists such as Elaine Comparone. However, I always assumed it was unplayable on the piano since the two hands would be right on top of one another, which is why Couperin specified two keyboards--that is, until I heard the Russian pianist Sokolov play it. There's a clip of it on You-Tube called Sokolov Couperin Le tic toc Choc. It's astounding!

We must not forget that Couperin wrote his piece as a “pièce croisée” (scores of the left hand and the right one overlap), ONLY for a two-keyboards-harpsichord. So all scores played on a modern piano are trancriptions (there are several) requiring a high degree of virtuosity. One of the pinnacle is reached with the version of Sokolov. But is it still exactly the work of François Couperin? In any case, congratulations for the beautiful interpretation by harpsichordist Elaine, the true one.
@anna-helenahamann
@anna-helenahamann Год назад
Couperin wrote himself that his ”pièces croisée”s may be played on an instrument with only one keyboard, by moving the accompaniment an octave higher. It’s undeniably true that that piece was composed with a harpsichord with two keyboards in mind. However, according to the composer’s instructions, there are several ways of performing it on a more “limited” instrument.

I agree with you. Couperin was a renowned musician at Louis 14th's court. At that time, the atmosphere at court was very superficial, driven by an atmosphere of festivity and fantasy (possibly to 'forget' wars in progress). So I won't be surprised if this piece was originaly played with a kind of delirious/humoristic style.

@ElaineComparone
@ElaineComparone 6 лет назад
Sorry to take so long to reply! The harpsichord was built in 1972 by one of the foremost Boston harpsichord makers of the time----Frank Hubbard. It's a copy of a French-Flemish harpsichord of the 18th century. It has three sets of strings, two keyboards and a buff/lute stop. It has a transposing keyboard (which means I can play at A440 pitch as well as one half tone below) , installed after an accident where the instrument fell off the stand The tone is very sweet, as you can hear. The instrument is delicate and requires extra moisture in the air during the winter months. I tune it frequently. It is a good friend!
