Harrier Jump Jet In My Back Garden: Enthusiast Restores Iconic Plane
SUBSCRIBE: bit.ly/Oc61Hj
WHEN it comes to middle-aged men and their pet projects, a Harley Davidson or classic Mini will normally suffice. But not for Neil Banwell who has spent the last six years fixing up a Harrier Jump Jet. The 45-year-old bought the fighter jet on eBay for £10,000 in 2007 - without telling his wife, who was livid when she found out. He now estimates it is worth ten times that sum but says neither of them want to part with it. The fighter also comes with an interesting war history, having led the first attack dropping cluster bombs on Port Stanley during the Falklands War.

I've met Neil and his wife a very nice couple and Neil is always willing to open the hanger to let you have a good look around the harrier. He also has 2 fuel drop tanks in his field that look like huge bombs lol. Nice quite farm to stay on, so google Castle Farm camp site if you ever want to stay on his site and have a look around the harrier.

I've been to quite a few airshows and this was the aircraft I remember the best. It's incredible speed when doing the flyby and it's ability to take off vertically, hover and fly backwards! Amazing! It was unbelievably loud too.

Really important to keep these things alive. They are living archaeology. Think of the thousands of Spitfires, tempests etc that got scrapped or even pitched off carriers into the sea at the end of WW2. Such an incredible waste. Now there are hardly any of some types left.
@junkerju58
@junkerju58 7 лет назад
at the end of world war 2, thousand of aircrafts both from the USA, England, and Germany were ordered destroyed. I have a historical book with color photos of P51 mustangs, P40 Thunderbolts, P38 lightings, Bf 109 Messerschmitts, being chopped down in the field where allied and German troops left down. these were in flyable condition. even the pilots who flew them were saddened by these carnage. only a few were left to serve as fighters for allies of the USA. imagine, the cost of a P51 mustang was only $30K at that time. just like the cost of todays medium priced car.
@tSp289
@tSp289 7 лет назад
Ramon Kabigting Well, include inflation and it getrs closer to a million now. All the more reason not to waste them, even for their materials. But those were the conditions of the lend lease: we give you cash and materiel now, and then at the end of the war you ditch all your beautiful planes into the sea so you don't push down the price on our military exports. And now something like a Tempest II or a P-38 or Mosquito is more valuable than gold dust because nearly all of them were destroyed or cannibalised for parts by crop dusters in the US.
@ascoop22
@ascoop22 7 лет назад
The conditions of lend lease were to return the material after the war.
@tSp289
@tSp289 7 лет назад
Yes, but in actual fact, the stuff that got sent over was seriously devalued by hard use and the fact that technology had progressed so fast. So a Martlet/Wildcat from 1940 was not competitive with a Sea Hornet or a Vampire made just a couple of years later, so the cost of returning them was probably higher than their worth. Later war, the lend lease worked both ways, as the British war machine picked up the pace, it was producing better planes than the not-quite-current ones that were included in the LL. A little different for tanks, as the Sherman proved a great low-cost platform, especially in its modified forms with better guns etc. The thing about the lend lease's post-war terms wasn't about the actual materiel that got shipped, but about the defence market afterwards. They still wanted the UK to buy from US companies, which they wouldn't have if they still had all this stuff lying around to fill up support roles or be broken down for materials, so it had to go. It was fair enough economically, given how much stuff had been either given or sold at massive discount, but it was pretty tragic and destructive of all these beautiful machines.
@ascoop22
@ascoop22 7 лет назад
The material was devalued but it still was returned, per the original conditions of lend lease. If the US wanted to pay the cost of transport all the way to American soil that was up to them and some of it was. Sometimes it was just a matter of taking it into the American zone in Germany and saying "here it is" Or US bases in England. Much of it was sold off to other smaller allies or dumped. Lend Lease worked both ways early in the war when the US was caught short and unprepared. The British war machine picked up pace when the war started, 1939, and British and Canadian stocks of war material was still bigger than what the US had at the end of 1942. One of the items were small ships for escort duty that Canada and Britain provided to the US. The British were producing better planes even before Lend Lease started and provided them to USAAF when they arrived in England and North Africa. The agreement about Lend Lease post war terms was that the US wanted Britain to open up it's consumer and commercial trade to include the US after the war. Before the war Britain mostly traded among it's Empire, colonies and Commonwealth. The US wanted in to help benefit the US economy. Another Lend Lease term was for the US to take over Britain's military bases around the world. As far as Britain buying war material from the US defense market after the war, Britain still built it's own tanks, planes and ships. They didn't buy from the US after the war for the most part. Agree completely about the beautiful machines.

Good to see someone holding on to an Iconic part of our aviation heritage. I spent 6 years carrying out 3rd line major maintenance on Sea Harrier FA2's and T8 two-seaters at St.Athan until 2005. Good to see one again and its gives me flash backs to the noise and smells of ground runs, ECS checks and functionals :) Hope is goes well in getting the parts and I would concentrate on getting it panelled up (panels 2a etc) to keep the wonderful British weather out! Goodluck and all the best...Tim

i'm not sure if i should be proud or embarrassed but i understand this man. this is exactly what i would do only with an F16. no i don't need an engine, i can enjoy the static display. if it were flying i wouldn't be able to see it. the shape (to me anyway) is the purest embodiment of jet aviation. sure the 22's, 35's, 14's, Rafales, and Migs are all nice, but after the 16 the mold was broken.

You are better off getting a plane from a mothballed fleet. The boneyard is for an aircraft that already reach the end of it's service life. The airframe is already badly fatigue and may not survive another flight. But if you just want it for static display, then i guess it's ok.
