I had a debate with a person who said they were a socialist who went on to praise employers for giving people jobs. I asked, do you even know what socialism is. They said yes and kept on rambling. I asked, if you know what a socialist is, why are you praising employers? He doubled down and said, "because they are giving people jobs."

Typical Libertarian that I've come across. They want no government in what they say but insist the government be involved in their problems. Typical hypocrite.

But the Fed did conduct a study and found that 60% of the increase in prices, post pandemic (possibly during the pandemic too) is just corporations raising prices because they knew they could. They knew consumers expected inflation and would attribute any inflation to the supply chain issues of the pandemic. And they took advantage of that and price gouged everyone. This is verifiable information. All you have to do is read.

What I've heard from really devout libertarians (primarily the Austrian Economics type) is that their reasoning is that corporations only gain as much power as they do because of state law. Businesses would be far smaller and less influential if we didn’t have the kind of legal theory of the public firm that only exists by the enforcement of the state.

Murray Rothbard in his book _A New History of Leviathan_ for example argues that all the corruptive tendencies we associate with the corporation tie back in its tendencies to the structure of the state, with the extreme form being corporatism (the economic substance of fascism). Of course, I'm not in anyway suggesting that any of this is actually the case, but it's helpful to know what position they're arguing from.

@@Synodalian true, I need to read more history on it but I remember reading that corporations used to have to get a charter from the state to become legal entities, and in the old charters they had to have as their mission “the promotion of the public good” not seeking profits at any cost. This later changed so the gov may have a role in why corporations behave so greedily.

I'm a disabled and immunocompromised person who's lower middle class but was in poverty during 2020, and Trump's handling of the pandemic is reason #1 (among hundreds of reasons) why I will never support Trump. 900 billion dollars in PPP loans to rich corporations, while the largest wealth transfer in human history happened, and while us poor people were low on supplies because Trump was sending them to Russia. And then these same monsters want to throw a fit because of $70 billion in old weapons, less than 10% of the PPP money, is sent to Ukraine so that it can defend itself from unjust invasion from an oligarchical regime. As I already said, those voters hold her to a much higher standard than us. Smugly telling each other "but Trump is worse" doesn't change the fact that Harris often fumbles things that could draw those undecided voters in if she didn't. For example, the question about one main policy that requires congressional support: she could say "reform SCOTUS" and tie it to Jan 6, or say "reinstate Roe", these are popular things. But instead she said that "the era of partisan politics is going to go away", which I doubt anyone believes, and people never found out which policy she considers to be the most important. I would've been pretty frustrated if I was the person asking the question.

^^^ Unfortunately all that matters until we overturn C.U. is what the wealthiest donors & corporations say is important. And right now, there is A LOT of $$$ invested in the private prisons & detention centers on the border. This is also why so many people die from lack of health insurance, affordable housing, nutrition & harmful crap in everything we consume. What worries me is the constant rightward shift being made by neoliberals as they have shown to be willing to cannibalize 'progressives' in exchange for Cheney's & AIPAC blue hawks.

For weeks, my prediction has been (and still is) that Kamala will win by a landslide despite what all the polls say. I still hold fast to that belief because all the signs point to the vast majority of Americans just being sick, tired, and scared of Trump and the Republicans, even people who don't like Harris or the Democrats. I think in this election we're gonna see a record number of Republicans voting across party lines. That's not to say I think her strategy was good, I think those people would have voted for her regardless, and she should've been focusing on better messaging. But nonetheless, my prediction stands, and early voting is already starting to validate me. About 57 million ballots have been requested, 46% of them by Democrats and only 29% by Republicans, a number of whom will vote for Harris as well whereas I think very few Democrats would vote across the aisle to Trump.

How is immigration a positive to the poorest amongst us, when millions of people are now here and are competing for resources, housing, and overburdening the welfare system? For example, low income housing is a serious problem. The government is subsidizing some housing that outprice current residents in favor for tons of new people here illegally. The US spent hundreds of billions on illegal immigration, while the homeless issue is not resolved. Btw, this is in reference to an unchecked illegal system of of immigration rather than the system were America slowly lets in 1 million people per year.
