I was actually in his barn when I was a young child. His studio barn full of musical sculptures were amazing to me, as a kid. I, with my family, were his next door neighbors!

I remember the first time I ever saw one of these. It was a hot and breezy day and the rods were swaying and making a sweet sound. It did remind me of prairie grass.

Cool. They had a lady with a couple of Bertoia brooches on another episode. I like how we're seeing more modernist items on the show.

This one looks like monel (a nickel alloy) to me, and the year would have been 1970 or later by the welds. Nevertheless, a real beauty!

Funny to see this, since Knoll furniture in Grand Rapids MI is closing.

Bertoia only made furniture during one year, 1952. But rather remarkable and still in production. Not the most comfy, as made from steel wire, but with upholstery they are perfect shapes. He looked at his chairs as sculpture. “Space passes right through them”.

Bertoia made albums of the sounds made by these sonambients. My bachelor uncle would play them for my brothers and I and we would improvise dance acts for the adults. You can hear them here on youtube. He also made fantastic giant sculptures for office lobbies, etc.

Amazing that none of the rods are bent. And it look like grain waving when strummed.

These rods appear to be more rigid than the beryllium copper ones. They are probably one of his works in which he used stainless steel rods. He was known to experiment with different metals.

Pat Miller-Frame you're not supposed to wear gloves when handling paper because you lose dexterity and often damage it

Modern art sucks, and this is a wonderful example of the complete lack of competence and skill exhibited in such junk. The exacting skill required to make a genuine piece of art is becoming a relic of the past. How sad.
