I may have mixed feelings about the franchise but I've always given it this: It has some of the BEST music of any horror franchise. I may not find the movie itself particularly scary, but this music sure as shit is scary. Atmospheric, relentless, and tense. :3
I enjoy a fair amount of them, they're just not my favourite slashers (I'm more a Freddy fangirl.) and I don't find them particularly _scary._ Though truly slashers in general aren't typically fairly scary... they're more fun. With some exceptions. I will say I'm surprised you consider Jason X to be the worst. I actually think that one's kinda fun. I think the worst is either Part V or Jason Goes to Hell. Part V is more boring and soulless, but Jason Goes to Hell I think just feels like a giant middle finger to the fans. I can't disagree with your top 3 though, even if I think I like 6 a teensy bit better than 2. But I can't disagree that 4,6, and 2 are absolutely the tops in the series.
I enjoy the first seven, I love the first Nightmare on elm street move, but everything after the 2nd movie they made Freddy act like a clown (to be fair I love his joke, WELCOME TO PRIME TIME BITCH!, so really that isn't a total bad thing, because it's fun watching Freddy doing funny and creepy thing in his movies),I love the Texas chainsaw masscare, but after the first one they made him in a joke( not haha funny, the joke that makes you feel sorry),chucky was cool,Scream decent,Halloween the first 3 were awesome, but the after the 3rd it went down hill, F13 is the only (to me) that had a few good squeals then most horror movies
I just find Freddy really entertaining. I don't disagree that they turn him into too much of a comedic element but you just can't go wrong with Robert Englund's ham. Though I do think one of Freddy's nastiest kills came from the third film. The scene where he uses someones tendons and ligaments as puppet strings still genuinely makes me go "Eeeeeuuuugggghhhh Dx" I would love to see someone try a good, serious Freddy reboot though. Shame the one we got was so... mediocre. I liked Jackie Earle Haley's performance, but that was about it. But give the Nightmare series to someone with a love for the concept and a fertile imagination and it could probably be something real special. There's still a lot that can be done with the series' premise. I don't really consider Texas Chainsaw Massacre to be a slasher, tbh. I guess I can see why it gets lumped into that category though. And yeah... the franchise outside of the first film is a joke. Which is a shame because I think there is so much more that can be done with Leatherface. I think one of the most brilliant aspects of that original film is how much they manage to say about his character with visual details alone. If you actually pay attention to all the little details they add in the film, you can actually get some understanding of his character... and unlike other horror films that try to explain too much about the killers, the picture they paint is just as unnerving as what you actually see. I never really got into the Chucky movies. I love Brad Dourif but the character nor the movies never connected with me. But I can see the appeal. Halloween 1 & 2 are classics. I like #3 for what it is, but I can understand why it caused backlash. It's just a shame that said backlash led to the series becoming so repetitive, and when a slasher fan calls your series 'repetitive' - that is saying something. Although I do kind of respect what they tried with Curse. Well... what the producers tried. I still don't think I'd call the producers cut a particularly good film, and certainly not a good Halloween film, but I can respect their desire to do something different and do think that there was some strong atmosphere. It could have been a good movie on its own if they had fleshed it out as its own thing as opposed to forcing it into the Halloween franchise. Of course the director they hired turned out to be an absolute cunt in possibly the only existance I can think of where a director's meddling fucked over a film (Seriously, Joe Chappelle was a prick. No respect for Donald Pleasance or horror atmosphere.) as opposed to the producers.
