You can tell that book Tom read was probably the first volume of magic recorded.. Immortality is the greatest cheat of nature. The ultimate practice of magic And something as extraordinary as a horcrux sounds like a magically induced accident. A one shot lucky spell. It makes sense that nobody knew what a horcrux was until Tom because its a method of achieving something your not supposed to...
He might not have read it in the Restricted Section. Tom was known to lie and manipulate, when it suited him. He might have found this information somewhere else and when he decided to question Slughorn, made things seem as innocent as possible. "Sir, I was just in the library, when I came across this word..."
True.. slughorn is so attached to his prized students. He was a bit blinded since he said to harry he didnt know him like he did. He wanted to be part of everything tom did because he was brilliant. He knows what he did and lied to himself that it was academics and nothing more.
What I don't understand is why didn't tom go after slughorn the moment he knew harry was hunting horcruxes. He should've figured that slughorn must've opened his secret to harry.
Frank was around 17 when he filmed these scenes, and for a 17 year old actor - he was more than capable of bringing across coldness, evil, cruel intent, manipulation all in this one short scene. His diction and delivery was masterful. For 17 years old, his acting was sublime and superb. Anyone else agree?
@@a.c.e.-6316 Coulson is very attractive in the COS. He pulled off more of an aggressive charm. But when Frank played teenage Tom in HBP, he was very soft spoken, charming and his mannerisms were very professional. Thats why I think he got away with it so easy with Slughorn. The way he said "Of course Sir, it will be our little secret" was so evil/charming but I reckon Slughorn truly saw evil in Toms eyes but didnt do anything as he was an incredible student. You could see the fear in his face when Tom said "Horcrux"
@@breanakelly6192 yeah true, everyone is like: "how did Slughorn not realize how evil Tom was, he looks like a psychopath!", but I think Slughorn did realize that Tom was pretty messed up, he just never dared to mention it because he was scared of him but also really intrigued: he still admired Tom for being such a brilliant student.
Yeah it's a shame.. If only they included more book scenes. Out of all of the parts to omit, I wish they showed all of Dumbledore's memories in regard to Riddle. There are many more encounters/memories that Dumbledore had with Riddle/Voldemort, and in the book he shows them all to Harry. It's some of the best writing of the whole series in my opinion.
He had looked like this or how he looked in the Chamber of Secrets, no would have been so fucking disgusted when Malfoy was hugged by He Who Must Not Be Named HAHA.
" ... yes, but magic, especially dark magic ... leaves traces ... " The way Dumbledore was looking at Harry after he was affected by the ring gave me chills. Am I the only one who noticed this? I think Dumbledore wasn't talking about discovering a new horcrux at the cave. He was talking about Harry, and it was at this point that he realized that Harry himself was one as well.
I agree. There are many hidden clues that you don't notice when you watch for the first time, but watching it again you find new meanings everywhere. It does seem that Dumbledore was talking about Harry here (which anyway he already knew since Harry's parents died, as showed in Snape's last memory)
Surly dumbledore already knew Harry was a horcrux before he died cuz when viewing snapes memories dumbledore tells snape that the curse rebounded and Voldemort latched himself on the only living thing Harry himself if he wasn’t a horcrux he wouldn’t be able to talk to snakes or look into Voldemort mind
When Dumbledore said "leaves traces" and was looking so keen on Harry, he was only implying that dark magic stuff are not that difficult to trace and destroy
Slughorn: Right then. I'd better go make one for myself for when Dumbledore comes down here and murders me.... Dumbledore, April 22nd 1997: YOU TOLD HIM HOW TO WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?
I prefer Tom Riddle from COS. He's more handsome, he looks more like a fifth or sixth year student and he looks more innocent. Looking terrifying it's exactly how he must NOT look like. He looked so innocent in COS with Dumbledore and Hagrid. Here a lot can suspect him. Here his dark nature is so obvious.
I think a movie about Voldemort should cover his life from his parents history in a prologue, leading to his conception (explaining why he doesn’t understand love or compassion) and his rise to power from Hogwarts to Dark Lord leading to the First Wizarding War in the climax and concluding when he murders both James and Lily but ultimately it is Harry as a infant who stops him by causing his Killing Curse to rebound.
1:09 Love the way he says "You cannot die". It doesn't come off as an amazing, powerful thing. But rather, a dark, unnatural and disturbing result. Like the idea of 'never dying' is actually scary, and in some ways it is.
@@Kid_Charlemagne76 but imagine what you could do , especially with magic ,you could spend your time making new spells maybe even pushing the boundaries of magic but unlike Voldemort who hogged all his knowledge to himself ,you could share it
@@Rotisiv Depends how great you live? You could say exactly the same for someone who wants to end their life unnaturally. The two go hand in hand for me.
Something about the way Harry says, “Sir…” right after the memory is finished is so perfect. There is so much fear and disbelief in their reactions to just how evil Tom is.
Agreed but they ruined Dumbledore's reaction. "This is beyond anything I imagined..." Actually he did imagine it, he already guessed that Voldemort made several Horcruxes. "Could be anything, the most commonplace of objects..." They never establish that Voldemort collected trophies and preferred powerful and theatrical objects to make Horcruxes.
I totally agree with you. The actor is brilliant, portraying Tom Riddle perfectly. Although many people prefer Riddle from the chamber of secrets, I love this one most. This is the preteen Voldemort I imagine; handsome but mysterious.
@@mumumeme8496 When I was young, I thought the Tom Riddle from Chamber of Secret was quite overacting. I didn’t feel any sense of his ambition or even Voldemort’s characteristics. Maybe, he was just not the young dark lord I have imagined in my mind. But when seeing the guy from The Half Blood Prince, I was extremely surprised as Frank’s version was exactly Tom Riddle I was waiting for.
When slughorn says “in other words you never die” the look in toms eyes is so haunting. Total emotionless destruction. And when he says “of course sir” it is so fucking ominous and creepy and that’s why I love this scene
Ikr? "In other words you cannot die" ... Riddle's eyes go huge, like in that moment what he had suspected was true - that he could make himself immortal.
@@astrangerhere from the timeline in the book, he had already killed myrtle and made his first horcrux. And the gaunt ring means he killed his father and muggle grandparents. So he already has two horcruxes. He wants to know how many he can make, not what they do
@@mausemadchenmi7144 I think that he's murdered them but not yet made these objects into horcruxes, at this point. It's only after he learns of the horcrux giving immortality that he goes for it.
I think by this stage he’s already created one horcrux, , he wanted slughorns opinion on whether it would be possible to make more…the way he caressed the ring when facing the fireplace tells me he’s contemplating making it his next horcrux
If you look at Tom's eyes during the exchange they change slightly both shape and color before going back to normal. Like voldemort was coming out of Tom really for the first time.
PERFECT person to play Tom Riddle. The only problem I had with this movie is they didn't reveal more crucial stuff about Voldemort's life why he was the way he was. If you didn't read the book you would have no idea the ring he's wearing belonged to his uncle , and he got it to find out about his family, and when he realized his father was a muggle he killed him and his entire family.
***** haha yes it can be hard. Tom asked Slughorn because we see in the movie he does illegal things "all academic" so Tom knew exactly how to play him.
Yeh, the 6th movie is the worst considering how much they adapted from the actual book. They did most of the teen romance stuff and all that, they even added one more scene which wasn't in the book, but they left out most of the back story of Voldemort. Sorry, but that was stupid of them.
What are you talking about ? "Why he was the way he was" ? Do you really think that something "happened" to him and caused him to be this way? He was this way ever since he was a baby. Literally! There was literally never a "good" Tom. He was always Evil. Always. No gray areas in between.
The tone of Horace's voice on this subject reveals a lot about him as far as his morals go. He's utterly horrified at even the conversation of the subject of Horcruxes and knows that mutilating one's soul in intentional murder is a violation of natural law. Despite being a bit pompous and self serving, the man has lines that he knows ought not be crossed. Which just makes him feel like a regular person. It's relatable.
Exactly. That’s why I don’t understand why he felt the need to hide this in the first place. In my opinion he really did nothing wrong, and was clear in his message to Tom that this is dark stuff he should not be delving into. Superb acting!
I think it's because he felt responsible, since he gave Riddle the information he needed to proceed. Slughorn spent the rest of his life regretting helping Riddle.
If only Slughorn had laughed in his face and spun a lie about Horcruxs being possible but leaving the Wizard a drooling imbecile maybe Tom wouldn’t have pursued it.
Yes and when Dumbledore was up on the tower with Snape waiting for Harry and Snape started to leave he stopped by the stairs to look at Harry almost shocked or felt pity that he must die. Because that's when Dumbledore told Snape
Dumbledore should be happy now that Harry's Horcrux was destroyed without actually killing Harry but still, Harry gained some of Voldemort's talents when the killing curse backfired, how could such thing be possible? Dumbledore knows the source of the diary's power was the Horcrux as no mere memory could do such things as possess a girl, use magic or summon the Basilisk, even with regular magic
The portrayal of the manipulative nature of Tom Riddle in this scene is absolutely brilliant. When he says at 0:39 "which is, why I came to you," he already knows that Slughorn is not the kind of a person who will backfire by telling other people of Tom's dark research, because Slughorn is not a bold person and fears to destroy a good relationship with one of the most brilliant students he has ever met, or be blamed by the community for consulting such dangerous lore to a student.
X Zevyah yes true. He didn’t exactly know what Voldemort was up to, but he knew harry was interestingly crucial to all this since he was chemically connected to Voldemort. Speaking parseltongue, seeing visions of him, his dreams... so once he knew it was horcruxes he just put two and two together.
He may have already knew Harry was a horcrux when he found out Harry had the link between him and voldemort but the only reason he wanted slughorns memory was because he needed to know forsure how many. By the point in Slughorns memory Voldy had already made one but he was wondering what would happen if he made more. Besides slughorns memory about how many Dumbledore only did the pensive stuff so Harry could better understand his enemy
This performances was absolutely terrifying. To be still so young, so beautiful yet still be able to illicit such fear is true artist skill. What he was able to do in two minutes was more compelling than what many actors will ever do in their careers.
if you notice, guys are not like this at all in videos even of pretty women but women nowdays are all like this, it´s disgusting. Lost decent manners and it´s full blown thirsty.
@@scogchamp That is true, i agree with what you say, i was just meaning like lately with the new generations as they come, it´s the idea that im geting, but it´s not harm at all, just something to think.
Tom Riddle was definitely in my top 3 favorite characters. I'm not sure whether number 1,2 or 3. But I mean Tom Riddle, more than Voldemort. He was more interesting and mysterious back then. Voldemort just seems a little less intelligent and only having 1 thing on his mind 'kill harry, kill harry, kill harry'. I wished they had made a movie on Tom Riddle as well. A sort of spin off movie.
Yep, it's like a part when Snape (Slytherin) watch after Harry (Gryffindor) from his first time in Hogwarts until he's adolescent - apparently a meme where Albus (Gryffindor) watch after Tom (Slytherin) from his firs time in Hogwarts until he's adolescent.
Voldemort was extremely brilliant and not only did he wanted to kill Harry, I mean, off course he did since he was the only one who could stop him, however all his plans were to change the magic world, quite ambitious, heh? Tom was a great mind and mysterious student, but Voldemort was, indeed, the greatest dark wizard (and probably second greatest wizard after Dumbledore) of all time.
peacendpola23 I agree with almost everything you say but I would have to say grindewald was much stronger and powerful then him. Sorry if I didn't spell it right. But I agree with albus
Anyone else feel just little bit bad for Slughorn? He, like so many others, sees so much potential in Tom and he desperately wants to believe his student isn't going down a dark path. Slughorn obviously feels immense guilt over providing Tom with this information, quite possibly believing he is the reason Voldemort became so powerful and practically unkillable (this is somewhat vain of Slughorn, as I have no doubt Tom would've found the answers he was looking for eventually regardless of what Slughorn did or didn't tell him). I don't blame him for trying to hide this memory from Dumbledore. Slughorn had his flaws, but he wasn't a bad man and he really did want to see his students succeed.
I think it’d have been nice if Dumbledore after finding out the truth reassured Slughorn that he wasn’t responsible for Toms evils path later in life, give Slughorn closure on the subject.
I rewatched the sixth movie again and when 3:23 onwards played again I actually yelled because I though Dumbledore knew the whole time, but after watching it again I realized this is the scene where he knew Harry was a horcrux and the look on Dumbledore's face is so socked and heartbroken and my god, he's not talking about the locket when he says he thinks he found another, he's talking about Harry. How did i miss this
Yeah this is amazing foreshadowing by Rowling, I noticed it too. The double-meanings in dumbledore's language fooled us all into thinking he meant the locket (which he did on the surface) but the subtext of what he's saying shows he's talking about Harry. Especially when he says he'll need Harry's help to destroy it and that he must again 'ask too much of [Harry]. He knew even at this point that Harry would have to die for Voldy to. Endkfnfksmskdlg
That's what i don't understand, whene snape say " you raised him like a pig to slaughter" that's not true ? He only knew in the last films so that means Dumbledore didn't intentionnaly raised harry to slaughter since the start ?
Frank Dillane as Tom Riddle was just FLAWLESS casting. He got his calculating and charismatic nature on point so hard I always found it extremely unsettling.
Retroactively, the most important moment in this scene is when Harry touches the ring. Dumbledore noticed how he reacts, and that’s the moment Dumbledore realizes that Harry is himself carrying a piece of Voldemort. The way he says “leaves traces…” you can tell he’s heartbroken.
The shaking in Dumbledores voice when he says leaves traces he figured out what harry was and i would so love to lick dan radcliffe from head to toe hes so gorgeous 😍
Tom Riddle: I was in the library the other day, in the Restricted Section, and I read something rather odd about a sith lord. It's called, as I understand it... Darth Plagueis. Horace Slughorn: I beg your pardon? Tom Riddle: Darth Plagueis. I came across the term while reading and I didn't fully understand it. Horace Slughorn: I'm not sure what you were reading, Tom, but this is very dark stuff. Very dark indeed. Tom Riddle: Which is why I came to you. Horace Slughorn: It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create... life. He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side, he could even keep the ones he cared about... from dying. Tom Riddle: But I don't understand how that works, Sir. Horace Slughorn: The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. Tom Riddle: What happened to him? Horace Slughorn: He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power...which, eventually of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death... but not himself. Tom Riddle: Is it possible to learn this power? Horace Slughorn: Not from a Jedi... This is all hypothetical, isn't it, Tom? All academic? Tom Riddle: Of course, sir. It'll be our little secret.
Dumbledore already knew that Harry was a horcrux since the Chamber of Secrets. He even told him that Voldemort had unknowingly transferred his powers to Harry as a result of his failed attempt to kill him as a baby.
The very end of this video is one of my favorite moments of the movie and possibly the series because the attention to detail is just incredible. In that moment you can see the exact moment when Dumbledore realizes Harry is a horcrux, and it's moments like that, that just make me love this series so much
I think Dumbledore already knew that Harry was a horcrux back in Chamber of Secrets. He told him that Voldemort had unknowingly transferred his powers to Harry as a result of his failed attempt to kill him as a baby.
Dumbledore knew that Voldemort wasn't dead even when he "disappeared" upon his failed attempt to kill Harry. He told Harry in Sorcerer's Stone that "there are ways in which Voldemort can return" and he said the same thing to Snape when Harry was looking at Snape's memories in Deathly Hallows. Both moments suggest that Dumbledore is already aware of Voldemort making horcruxes and he got his proof in Chamber of Secrets. What Dumbledore didn't know is how many horcruxes were made until he saw Slughorn's memories in Half Blood Prince.
@@loudboy317 this is basically what the book says. When Harry and Dumbledore come out of the pensive in this scene, there is a line where Dumbledore says "It confirms the theory on which I have been working, it tells me that I am right, and also how very far there is still to go..."
This was the absolute best version of Tom Riddle/lord Voldemort….he’s so creepy, yet sneaky, and somewhat sinister, plus he’s a decent looking guy which helps him be more secretive and sly like a true snake….
This is my personal favourite Voldemort scene. It really emphasises how evil tom riddle is by the look of shock on Dumbledore's face as he learns about the horcrux's
Not going to lie, I think if I were to attend Hogwarts around Tom's time, I doubt I'd be able to resist his charms either, he is so subtle, interesting, and alluring. Tom could lure you in with a desire to learn more about him, he holds his darkest secrets above your head like candy, out of reach. The soft look in his eyes and small smile at the end could swoon anybody. Since Tom knows that plenty people are vulnerable to their emotions and desires, while his control over his own is almost at perfection. His mind is truly psychopathic, because he'd be perfect with no flaws shown. The perfect mask for Voldemort. That it is unfortunate that he threw it away for the snake-like appearance. He could have taken over Wizarding Britain more easily by becoming Minister of Magic with that charming smile.
Clare Chang after watching again and again. i believe... its the accent. lol. no offense but immagine him talking in an american accent. hotness down the drain. lmmml. i sound like a fuckin gay person on this acc lol.
I think all this dark magic eg soul splitting affected his intelligence as well as his physical appearance. Becoming immortal comes with a sacrifice I guess.
3:30 Wow. I just realized, when dumbledore says “dark magic, leaves traces.” and touches the ring, it spins unnaturally, and harry twists his head around. he says it leaves traces while looking back up at harry. it almost seems like dumbledore realized at that moment that harry could be a horcrux.
When Dumbledore looks at Harry and says "leaves traces" after Harry shakes his neck, that is when Dumbledore came to the horrible realization that he was a horcrux
Dillane is PERFECTION in this scene. He's just perfect--every beat, every moment is so perfectly calibrated. The guy in CofS is okay but this guy is much more fully realized.
Free Shotballer he was a star student who was favoured by most teachers so I presume they didn't really think twice about giving him access to the restricted section
Reminds me of The Ancient One's private collection "There is no forbidden knowledge in Kamar Taj. Only certain practices." You can read from them, but you can't actually *do* the rituals which are forbidden
nah you'd need spells and/or a magical process to actually create a Horcrux after committing murder. Obviously I know you're just making a joke, but I think you'd actually need to commit murder for the express purpose of making a Horcrux.
@@seanking6184 Indeed. Even venus plants can be considered killers of bugs and our antibodies kill dangerous bacteria everyday. But Tom didnt murder to get a burger, he killed people for petty reasons in cold blood.
@@conn_man_249 obviously. But the characters from boy to 'snakeman' are so different. I find voldemort less intimidating and well thought out than the child version of him. Voldemort just seems more like a raging kid with ADHD than a scary villian.

@@sev1626 Glad you agree, if they kept this vibe with him into his later version I'd feel it'd add much more mystery and horror to him as a ultimate bad guy but they failed to deliver that, shame.

Dillane’s portrayal is pure genius and really managed to send a chill down your spine. This scene is the defining moment of the unbecoming of Tom Riddle, and the becoming of Voldermort. Paired with such vulnerability of Slughorn upon merely hearing the question. Such a pivotal moment played so well. I never get tired watching this scene. He certainly woud have made Chamber of Secrets feel darker.
0:25 i always think his act is quite delicate and so vulnerable. This Young Voldmort definetly gave me chills at the same time this reaction was so well portrayed. Fear,doubt,trust,frightened,surprised....everything
This actor was absolutely brilliant. He made the whole movie in my opinion. Exactly what I would expect Voldemort to be like. The other actor was terrible. This one was very charming and persuasive. Brilliant.
+Robert Gardner Yeah, that's him. It's hard to tell at some times. You can really tell it's him when he whispers or lowers his voice. He does a good job in Fear the Walking Dead.
A creepy kid comes to you at night and with his creepy voice asks you about dark magic and once you explain it envolves murder he keeps asking about it again in his creepy voice until you finally had enough and ask him if its all just academic he turns around with his creepy face pauses and then with his creepy voice says yes of course... YEPPP I BELIEVE HIM!!!
Nah it’s like, Tom started gaining trust from his professor. If u remember how slughorn had a club for his fav students for whom he used to arrange separate party. Same way even during olden days he used to do the same. Since Tom was his fav student, he started explaining him about the doubts what Tom had.
Tom for Slughorn was like Harry for Dumbledore, he was his best student That was the way Tom spoke in, he was always like that, so Slughorn didn't find it creepy If Harry asked Dumbledore about the same thing, he'd have answered because he'd be sure that Harry would never do anything like that. It was the same with Slughorn
I think slughorn was scared of him tbh, he even said to Harry “You have no idea what he was like, even then” when he gave Harry his true memory of this conversation
Hermione shows off at any opportunity and she tries to sound smart (Emma’s acting as brilliant) but Tom knows he is smart and has no need to exaggerate his intelligence
Smarter and manipulative. And don't compare Voldemort to Hermione. Hermione had heart in the right place and was capable of love and compassion. So was Harry. Voldemort was cruel and he was a psycho.
Extra info: As revealed on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" book version, the book which described the Horcruxes in detail and how to create them was on the Restricted Section at the time Tom Riddle was on Hogwarts. However, Dumbledore removed that specific book (and some others) from the Restricted Section when he became Hogwarts new Headmaster, keeping them on his office.
Honestly this is an amazing portrayal of an irl psychopath, right down to the voice cadence and facial expressions. Don't know what some people find attractive about this, but to each their own, I guess. The only thing is that I don't understand in-universe is how wizards found Mr Stoneface Mcdeadeyes here charming enough to trust. I'll just imagine that he got better with emoting through the years. Manipulation is an art, after all.
I only just realized, when Harry touches the ring and it spins Dumbledore then says "leaves traces" indicating that Harry is a horcrux!!! Harry should have guessed!
He is the most sexiest and pure evil. Frank. Dillane did really a great job. I just watched the movie for him only. He is a brilliant actor . Harry / daniel can learn a thing from him. Afterall acting is in dillanes blood.
