Why Snape was the Half-Blood Prince: His mother was from the pure-blood Prince family, and was disowned for marrying a muggle. Snape hated his father, and when he got in with the pure-blood purists at school, gave himself a nickname (just like Voldemort) to reject his father's name and tie himself to his pure-blood relatives.

No spoilers ahead good sir. Some answers ahead... 4:38 Hermione's parents know about the wizarding world. If I am not mistaken you can see them in movie 2 with Hermione on her shopping diagonally (not sure if is the extended version). They have to give permission so kids can learn magic. Instead of just a letter, usually, a professor goes to their house to explain things to them. In the first movie, Harry's aunt mentions Lilly receiving the letter. 7:12 There are other wands shops. They are rare too. There is more information about that in book 4. 36:35 Because of time the movies cut a lot of memories of Voldemort and I mean a lot. All these memories make sense when they show you about Horcruxes. You will see in the future how movies give clues. I'm just sad I love the memories, Voldemort had a very interesting story and they decide to exclude to make teenage drama. 40:26 Finale someone understands that! Thank you, sir! Only 2 movies to go, brace yourself! Winter is coming.... ops wrong series...

Voldemort was born in 1926, Snape was born in 1960. Obviously Snape couldn't have been Voldemort's professor at Hogwarts. In fact, Snape was only 31 when Harry Potter first came to Hogwarts. He's one of the youngest professors there, if not *the* youngest. Also, Harry's parents were only 21 when they were killed. The filmmakers decided to cast much older actors, which unfortunately messes up the timeline really bad.
@im_azraelle
@im_azraelle 2 года назад
they did in fact age up Snape, the Marauders, and Lily. this was because JK Rowling desperately wanted Alan Rickman to play Snape, so since he got the role and he of course looks much older, they had to cast other characters of the same age older as well. pretty sure Snape, The Marauders, and Lily were in their early 30s when Harry was born, and in their early 40s when the movies start (minus James and Lily, RIP).

People hate on Draco so much and I know some others may still not agree with this but I really really sympathise for him. Draco was born into an aristocratic family on the dark side, his father (Lucius) raising him in an arguably cold household and treating him with only hostility and narcissism. Remember that scene in Chamber Of Secrets? It’s usually just in the extended version but we see Lucius constantly swinging at him with a cane whenever he touched something in the shop, he was only 12. Ever since Draco was born he had been told to never show any sign of weakness because he is a Malfoy and must always be on top and look down on others, hence the bullying you see in first few movies. Of course being prejudice is practically inexcusable, but when being raised in a home that believes in only blood purity to the point of murder I’m not surprised the young child grew into that mindset. His whole life has just been him trying to make his father proud and do what he’s been destined to do since birth, be a death eater. People keep saying “there’s always a choice!” but was there one for Draco realistically? He adores his father and if he goes to someone like Dumbledore for help I’m sure he knew Lucius would get busted, plus that can link into being taught to never show weakness, asking for help is weakness in his eyes. Furthermore if he tried to do anything about stopping his task in this film Voldemort would kill him. In this film you said Draco looked rather numb and emotionless in most scenes, you would be depressed too if you knew you had no choice but to murder your headmaster and had already gotten the deatheater dark mark. Also remember when Draco said on the train “I’d rather pitch myself off the astronomy tower” instead of continuing to go to Hogwarts, well later on after seeing Ron and Lavender Brown run off together we see Draco standing at the ledge of the astronomy tower looking down. Think about it, even with ALL of that on the line for him he still wouldn’t kill Dumbledore, Harry said himself he was lowering his wand. I think Draco is truly just a lost soul with so much potential, he was just born into a really awful lifestyle. Anyone can have their opinions and I’d love to hear yours too, but I will always have a place in my heart for Draco and his story.
@MsAppassionata
@MsAppassionata 2 года назад
If you notice, in the last film in the scene after Harry goes into the forest to meet Voldemort, Draco’s father Lucius calls Draco to join them but Draco does not respond until his mother Narcissa calls him over. I think that by this time Draco has lost a lot of respect for his father and his views, especially after Voldemort humiliated him by breaking his wand.

13:57 The movie doesn't do a good job of explaining it. But basically, in the book, Dumbledore explains that it established that whenever Voldemort/Tom Riddle did something bad to someone, or did something that showed off his magical prowess, he would keep a "trophy" of it and hide it in his dresser. That's the same behavior that led him to create the horcruxes

Even though this is considered one of the best books in the series, I feel like the movie really falls flat in comparison. There is a lot more info in the books about Voldemort's background and also Harry's connection/obsession with the Half Blood Prince that makes the story feel more well-rounded. If there was one book in the series I'd say you should read, it would be this one.

exactly. I felt like they butchered all of the voldemort backstory. I've always wondered if people who haven't read the books are confused about how harry and them know which items are the horcruxes. I don't like how the movie used his "ability to feel them" as the way to find them, and not the extensive research that Dumbledore did on voldemorts past to know not only which items are horcruxes, but where they might also be hidden as well. The book is miles ahead. This movie disappoints me.

@@mariahwatts3468 Not only did they butcher Voldy's backstory, they also butchered the relationships or at least Hinny, which is bad in itself because the movie is all about relationships and they don't do them right. So, basically, what even is the movie? It's my least favourite one for sure.

Half blood Prince aka Snape actually created 3 known spells during his Hogwarts years and all 3 were used in the movies although only one was explicitly mentioned. Sectumsempra is Snape signature offensive spell, that slice target with invisible blades (basically what happened to malfoy) and as far as we know, only Snape and Harry know this spell although Harry stopped using it I believe after Book/Movie 6 Levicorpus is a spell that levitates target by their ankle. It was the spell referenced by Snape as the one James Potter (Harry's Dad) stole from him and used it against him. We saw this in the flashback of Movie 5 when James bullied Snape. Harry learned the spell via memory and taught it to his classmates in Dumbledores Army. We saw Nigel being levitated in practice round but it was most recognised use was by Luna in the Movie 5, when they fought against the Death Eaters The final spell is Muffliato, an anti-eavesdropping spell. In Book 6, Harry mainly uses the spell to talk in private when out in the open. Hermione despise the spell because she hated anything to do with the Half Blood Prince. However in Book 7 and Movie 7, Hermione acknowledge the defensive use of the spell and was among her defensive charms that she placed in Book/Movie 7 (which you will see her use it later but was not explained the purpose or history of the spell). Harry will also use the spell as part of their defensive spell kit. Just some fun fact I guess. It really shows Snape's ability to create useful spells

In the book it is made clear that Draco getting ordered to kill Dumbledore is not because Voldemort thinks he is able to do it. Just the opposite. It is because Voldemort thinks Dumbledore will defend himself and will kill Draco. It is a punishment for Lucius Malfoy because he let his master down and did not get the prophecy Voldemort wanted in the previous movie.

The only clues I can think of that would help you discover the "Snape being the half-blood prince" thing weren't in the movie lol 1- Lupin tells Harry that Levicorpus (one of the spells he found in the book) was very popular at the time he was a student at Hogwarts (which was also the time when SNAPE was a student at Hogwarts); 2- The book was a potions manual with several notes. Who's the one character we know that's a master of potions and was at Hogwarts when Levicorpus became popular? Snape.

I totally understand your dislike of Luna. I personally do not identify with it, because I like her, but I usually tend to dislike people everyone else likes in tv shows or movies. You don't need a specific reason to dislike anyone, some characters don't suit you and that's fine :) It's also curious to see you connect the dots faster than most reactors! I agree with you - I got so invested in Draco within the book 5 and 6. :) Also, a piece of fun information: JKR wanted Alan Rickman to play Snape, finding him perfect for the role, but Rickman was not sure about it. In order to convince him, she went to him and told him about Snape's story and things you would find out in Deathly Hallows pt. 2, and he agreed. He never actually revealed that to any director over the years.

In book 2, we find out that Voldemort is a half-blood, but I can't remember if they mention his muggle father in the 2nd movie. And the Half Blood Prince book, they go into a memory and explain Voldemort parents relationship. His mother actually uses a love potion on his father, they get married, they move away from their Hometown, and it keeps him away from any of his friends because they questioned the relationship coming out of nowhere. When she becomes pregnant, she thinks that the years have made it, so Tom Sr. has actually fallen in love with her and stopped giving him the love potion. He immediately leaves her and the baby and goes back home. I'm definitely not a fan of how the love potions are portrayed as a silly schoolgirl thing and play for laughs. And even though the books include the story of Voldemort's parents, it doesn't really address the severity in which this man's consent was taken from him. That he was kidnapped, isolated, raped, and held captive for years. It mostly focused on what a spoiled brat and horrible person he is. And somewhat excuse her actions because of her horrible and abusive upbringing.

I definitely understand your criticisms of Luna, can get a little annoying at times. I personally really like the character. She's just unabashedly herself, couldn't give two shits about who thinks she's weird. The reason Harry and her have a bit of a bond is because they've both seen death. As a result, she's one of the first people his age that actually understood what he was going through during the aftermath of Cedric's death. So often, Harry hears something no one else does (Chamber of Secrets), or sees something no one else does (the Thestrals in Order of the Phoenix) and Luna was the first to not say something like "there were no voices Harry" or "there's nothing there Harry"... She said "I see them too". She makes him feel more understood, makes him feel like he's not crazy.

*minor spoiler about the half blood prince* Snapes mother was Eileen Prince and his dad was Snape. He didn’t like his dad so he made “half blood prince” as a nickname in school

Snape mom was a witch named Eileen Prince who married a Muggle Tobias Snape. Hence the name half blood prince.

Agreed: Michael Gambon very proficiently, and entertainingly, filled very huge "shoes" in his several roles in the entire HP series. Please, Professor NN, remember that Dumbledore had drunk the basin of potion in the cave, AND he had absent-mindedly touched the cursed ring and was "infected" by Voldemort's curse that Snape said would kill D within a year.

In the book Harry is bound to a nearby wall on the tower by dumbledore. By binding Harry to the wall Dumbledore lost time and got disarmed by Draco. Snape then came and killed Dumbledore ruthlessly. Since Harry was under the invis cloak, Snape never saw him there.

Bound via Patrificus Totalis, which they introduced in movie 1 and could have used again here! And the invisibility cloak too! This scene is so goddamn stupid in the movie, why the hell did they change it?!
@somerandomguy2073
@somerandomguy2073 2 года назад
@@Tustin2121 To give Harry more agency and show him as a man capable of acting maturely and restraining himself (rather than having to be physically incapacitated, like a child) on the command of his wise mentor. It's a much more mature version of the scene. Harry demonstrates his trust and loyalty to Dumbledore by listening to him and doing something counterintuitive for the greater good. That's incredibly important for the next chapter of the series.
@Tustin2121
@Tustin2121 2 года назад
Some Random Guy - That’s a drastic departure in character for him from the books. Harry in the books is dense, rash, and has a major hero complex. He’s so goddamn stubborn sometimes, he often can’t see the solution to his problems staring him in the face. It’s specifically because Harry isn’t mature enough to do what he did in the movie that Dumbledore made him promise to do as he was told before they left (it was an argument almost in the book). And it’s also why Dumbledore spent his last moment to act casting a bind spell on Harry the way he did, so it wouldn’t be possible for him to interfere. (Of course, the movies change all the characters’ personalities in various ways, making Ron a lot dumber and making Hermione a lot less socially awkward and more inexplicably knowledgeable about wizard customs, so par for the course, I guess.)

Wizards don't need wands to use magic, however it's considerably difficult to do so and wands can definitely help a wizard hone their powers. Wands were invented in Europe, and, as such, many places that didn't see as much European influence often practice wandless magic as the norm. The most powerful wizard able to perform wandless magic that we know of is Albus Dumbledore who was able to cast advanced magic both wandless and nonverbally, which even the more powerful wandless practitioners had difficulty casting basic nonverbal spells. The books mention the Half-Blood Prince far more often and even explains that Harry considers him a powerful wizard whom Harry considers a mentor, which makes the reveal that it's Snape at the end much more powerful. Should probably mention that Ginny is so much more of a badda$$ in the books, and the growth of her relationship with Harry is much less awkward. That ugly guy by the way is Fenrir Greyback. Not only a werewolf, but *the* werewolf who attacked and caused Remus Lupin to become a werewolf. Fenrir basically has a mission to attack and contaminate as many people as possible. In the book, Harry actually rationed out the Luck potion into several uses that would last shorter periods of time. Felix Felicis itself is highly toxic when drunk in large quantities and causes recklessness and overconfidence. It's also extremely hard to make and takes half a year to brew, thus making it highly unreasonable to actually make and use. Horace Slughorn himself only used it twice in his life; once when he was 24 and once when he was 57. Oh and Hagrid may not have been in his hut when it was burnt down, but his dog was. RIP Fang. He was a very good boy. (Not gonna delete this but I did reread the book and realize Fang was saved. Sorry for the misinformation) Voldemort was extremely disappointed in Draco's father after he failed to retrieve the prophecy, so getting Draco to kill Dumbledore was supposed to redeem his family. Draco had much more at stake than just his own life, and he failed. I don't want to spoil much, but after you watch the Deathly Hollow movies, I suggest watching the deleted scenes for those movies.

Also right before you asked your question maybe you misheard but Hermione said “Even my parents they’re muggles and they know something bad is happening” so since ive read the books such a long time ago im not completely sure but they must know basics pretty much but thats it ?

So we know that Tom Riddle's intention was to make 7 Horcruxes. However, we do not know (as of this movie) how many he was successful in creating before he was defeated. So Harry's pursuit of the Horcruxes is all the more difficult because he doesn't yet know 1) how many there are, 2) what they are, and 3) where they are.

Sectumsempra spell translated as... Many cuts I also just want to mention... That Dumbledore made those flames even when he was weakend both by paying blood .. drinking a poition that does who knows what and... The poisoning in his hand (the dark part) Dumbledore was seen as the greatest wizard of all time even exeeding merlin who might have been in this world too but before thier time And in previous movies there were hints of him being the half blood prince... For example in the first movie.... When he taught potions himself

Basically, u go into the last movies 'Deathly hallows' w/ the only key to killing Voldemort are the Horcruxes that Tom Riddle created as a young man... Dumbledore had a plan in motion for Harry Potter before he died. So, u have 2 (of 7) Horcruxes destroyed - the diary of Tom Riddle that Harry Destroyed in 'Chamber of Secrets', and the ring of Tom Riddle that Dumbledore discovered here and destroyed... the locket of Slytherin that they had recovered from the cave was a fake; it was apparently stolen by someone w/ the initials 'R.A.B.' ... Voldemort is rising to power fast, and Harry Potter is the one prophesized to end his reign. Remember, it was the prophecy that had Voldemort target Harry for death as a baby - only his mom's spell (activated by her sacrifice) kept her son alive from Voldemort's curse. The scar is the link between Harry & Voldemort... and the prophecy said that "neither can live while the other survives"... Besides the real locket of Slytherin, 4 more Horcruxes have to be found & destroyed before Voldemort can be killed.

I always wondered, why don’t people just master, then constantly brew liquid luck and just drink more once it wears off, I guess it has side effects in excess use like giddiness and over confidence. But that’s a pretty good trade off if you ask me. it’s a bit ridiculous, someone could have everything go perfectly in their life in exchange for some personality quirks lol
