Today J dives into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter AND the Star Wars Galaxy to figure out: Is Harry Potter just star wars? Are Wands just lightsabers? Is Harry just Luke? An orphan hero who gets left with his school-hating aunt and uncle before being rescued by an older bearded man?

Hey Brother! A couple weeks ago I finally saw the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in theaters and I thought it was great. I was glad to see the map although I didn’t think much of it until I saw your review. I looked it up and of course there is now an official canon map, compared to the current United States. My job for you, is to use geography and theories and stuff to find out once and for all when the Hunger Games take place. It may be tricky but the entire fandom is counting on you. And may the odds be ever in your favor!

Joseph Campbell wrote both of these books. J seemed to describe the Hero’s Journey very clearly and dipped a toe into The Hero with a Thousand Faces. That book goes deeper into the mythological and fantasy story, which both stories still fit very well.

Yeah 😢 I miss them both. Yotus is alright as the new Chewie, but that role is just tainted with sadness for Mr. Mayhew. I think we should just jump into like the Dawn of the Jedi era. one of my favorite topics! I studied this back in college, all of the "quest" literature (LOtR, SW, Wizard of Oz, Arthurian Legends ,and all of the more modern iterations you mentioned) can't help but use these archetypes. They are hard-wired into our subconscious. And they even have roots in the Bible, but go back even further than that. I just love this stuff. Thanks for getting to this!

And Dumbledore keeping a “pet” that for some reason totally hates Snape is peak Dumbledore humor. 😂

The reason in the re-edits Anakin comes back as a younger version of himself is due to himself joining the Dark Side. His Force Ghost is a image of the very last time he was on the Light Side. You could argue that he came back to the Light Side shortly before he died, yet his body was a mess. No legs, only like one arm, he took the form of the last time he was on the Light Side & had a body.

This is a wildly interesting theory and it fits too well. Also what do you think of the theory Ron would have been in Slytherin had he not immediately been placed in Gryffindor because he was a Weasley. He seeks power, wants glory, is mean and crude. He embodies Slytherin so well compared go Gryffindor.
@S-Mania
@S-Mania 8 месяцев назад
Not to knock Slytherin, but I think he more values Hufflepuff. He's the friend who's always there for his friends and is accepting of everyone, once he gets to know them and they don't double-cross him). He even supports Harry (and by extent, Dumbledore) when his other friends didn't. Plus, he loves to eat in the books and movies. Hufflepuff common room is right by the kitchen.
@bernardoliz10
@bernardoliz10 8 месяцев назад
Was he does have some of Hufflepuff and Slytherin characteristics, but he does get the Sword of Gryffindor from the river and use it to destroy the locket, and in Goblet he seems very envy of Harry, which is not very Hufflepuffy. But the one house that everyone agrees he wasn’t likely to go was Ravenclaw!

Great breakdown, I'm glad you brought it to Campbell, rather than just leaving it as a comparison on its own. Another one that I thought paralleled Star Wars even more is the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon). You take all of the Hero of a Thousand faces beats you pointed out here, and add things like the ancient order of special protectors with special weapons that everyone thought was destroyed by a former member of the order who turns out to be the main characters father. Also, the old hermit who finds the hero was hiding nearby, and a secret survivor of that order, even though they were all hunted down and killed by the evil empire, and then you find out that theres *another* secret hidden survivor who gets to continue the training. Its pretty wild lol

I have the same thought, except with A Series of Unfortunate Events. However with ASOUE, the connections are a lot less similar. The protagonist(s) is/are orphan(s) who's late parents were rich and part of a secret world the children have no idea about. (also Harry and Klaus both wear glasses) They're being hunted by an evil man (who's an orphan themself) who killed their parents. They start their journey with a family who aren't the nicest (Dursleys/Poes) The three main protagonists each share similarities, Harry and Violet are brave, selfless and resourceful, Hermione and Klaus are intelligent and quick learners, and Ron and Sunny are smarter than others expect, loyal and hard working. By the end of the first book, the villain almost succeeds, but fails due to the main power they oppose (Love/Law). The second book in both series basically mean the same, The Chamber of Secrets and The Reptile Room. The main villain isn't a major threat until past halfway through the series. In both series, just after the villain gains power, the protagonist(s) are painted as liars and defiled by the government. There's a small plot point involving unknown initials (RAB/JS) The villain gains a female crony who's in love with them (Bellatrix/Esmé) For a short period the villain changes their goal to search for an artifact(The Prophecy/Sugar Bowl) In book Near the end of the last book, the protagonist(s) are close to death, but don't completely die. The villain is killed due to a weapon they own(Elder Wand/Harpoon Gun) Both series are made up of an unlucky number of books. 3 is also a very common number in both series. One last thing I noticed is that two of the House mascots play major roles in a ASOUE book. Snakes are a big part of The Reptile Room, and Lions are a big part of The Carnivorous Carnival. I should mention Crows are a common symbol of intelligence and play a big role in The Vile Village, but Ravenclaw's mascot is an eagle.

I was thinking of Han Weasley immediately, but Ron Solo cannot be denied. Also figured out the inevitable Hero's Journey tropes would be mentioned and though the Original Trilogy was referenced they not only did the HJ three times theatrically they've done it multiple times through the various shows, games and what have you. So maybe in the future the Hero's Journey will be called "Star Wars Yet Again." I'm not even sure I'm joking about this, it sounds a little too plausible.

Aaaand you can add Eragon to the list of the thousand faces heroes. x) Seriously : a young guy who lives at his huncles in a normal life gets into adventures and being taught stuff by an older man. You can put all of them (Harry, Frodo, Luke, Eragon and others) in this sentence. And still it always makes complete different stories but with the same pattern. For the "Vader" character from Harry Potter, the one who fell because of love, i would say it's Snape. He didn't exactly fell because of his love (that he lost after his fall), but more because this love wasn't reciproqual and was the only thing that still linked him to the good side. So when he had a quarrel with Lily and their friendship ended, the good part he still had inside him died. Well, in a certain point of view.

I do enjoy looking like Ewan McGregor. Also, it's no surprise Luke so heavily follows the Hero's Journey. George Lucas was friends with Campbell and when he created Star Wars, he did so because he wanted to test if you could still create a modern myth using the same formula for ancient myths. He created Star Wars and suffice to say, he was proven right.

Hey, Brothers! As I was listening to CoS a couple weeks ago, I noticed Dumbeldore is described as "X-raying" Harry in his office after the attack on Nick and Justin. It's also implied in SS that Dumbledore can see Harry through the invisibility cloak. Lastly, the amount of times that Dumbledore's intense blue eyes are described is quite suspicious, especially considering the rarity of having rad hair and blue eyes (.17 percent of the population according to a quick search). This all leads me to my theory: Dumbeldore created the magical eye for Moody, and maybe even has one himself. Sorry if this is already established but everything I read said that the origins of Moody's eye were unmentioned. The fact that it is often described as "lightning blue" just as intense as Dumbeldores eyes are always described leads me to draw some connection. Perhaps Dumbeldore himself has one of these creations in his own eye socket? Moody's eye has very similar powers mentioned with his eye such as seeing through Harry's invisibility cloak after Crouch steals from Snape's storage and borrows the map, seeing through structures and cabinets in Grimmauld Place (the boggart). I'd love to see a video or a mention in the one of the podcasts on your thoughts! Keep up the great content, Brothers!

I think they should have started it with old Anakin, then had Anakin and Obi-wan look at each other, morphing to their younger selves in the as they moved, then back to their older selves as they turn back to Luke. So they see each other at the age they knew their friends best.

I’d say that Darth Vader is also partially Snape. Both Snape and Vader were initially good people who got corrupted, and who ultimately are realized as good guys in the end by the protagonist. Both also have surprises in store for the protagonist: “I’m your father.” and “I’m the half-blood Prince.” Both Snape and Vader were in love with their respective story’s protagonist’s mother.

I think a closer parallel to Staw Wars would be the Inheritance Cycle. Evil Empire ✅️ Uncle and aunt dead✅️ Mentor character dies in the first installment of the series✅️ Secret father character✅️ Magic mcguffin passed down from father to son (being force sensitive and being a Rider)✅️ Secret sibling plot✅️ And so much more in common.

The mentor (Obiwan and Sirius) of both heroes sacrifices themself to allow the hero and their allies to escape. There is a perceived threat and enemy dressed in black (Darth Vader and Snape) that in the end are redeemed by revealing their true soul within. Both heroes are guided along their path and seek comfort in the companionship of the souls of departed magical mentors. And… During the final battle, creatures of the forest become unlikely allies to overcome the evil empire. While the similarities could continue. I think that goes a bit beyond being due to The Hero of a Thousand Faces. Don’t forget that this is also the story of much of Star Trek (and more importantly Galaxy Quest), Hitchhiker’s Guide, Blazing Saddles, pretty much every Marvel movie, comic book, etc. There are more hero stories that follow this mold than do not.

I feel like a really great story that has A Hero of a Thousand Faces is Kingdom Hearts....Like when you actually sit there and think about Kingdom and everything Sora, Ventus, and Roxas have all went through (including the playable character from the mobile games), you realize that KH is just A Hero with a Thousand Faces done several times with different elements added into it. Like the amount of times Sora's died and come back is baffling.

Not to forget especialy Spiderman. Also grows up with his uncle and aunt. And i realy love the idea, that Petuina would be more like May if Vernon had been killed. And of cours the golden trio Peter, Mary Jane and Harry. Okay Harry Osborn is kind of Ron and Draco at the same time. And Norman is like if Lucius had the same skills as Snape. Would also have been interesting seeing Lucius fighing Voldemort.

Same here, although the woman who wrote Harry Potter is absolutely dead to me (as I assume she is to most of the people in the Wizarding World fandom). TBH, I never actually read the books until I was older. But I grew up watching the movies, and I loved them so much. As controversial as it is to say, I really prefer them over the books because I just adore the cast and I feel that no one can ever compare. And I absolutely love the Star Wars franchise as well, though not without criticism. There are things I’d rather not have, but overall, it’s a fun universe that I think is far more deeper in terms of lore than anything I can think of… which includes the Wizarding World franchise.

A lot of these elements are in the Epics of Gilgamesh, which is a story thousands of years old. Being a being of a particular time frame, we get to enjoy and be inspired by a particular version of the story, usually in our pre-teen - Early adulthood. After receiving such a story, the older ones seem dated and antiquated, then the newer ones seem derivative, and put too much of pop culture in them.

There are also some similarities in the soundtrack of the movies. The Jedi theme from Star Wars is not unlike the main theme / Hedwig's theme from Harry Potter. Yes, I know they're both composed by John Williams, but he made many more movie scores and none of them sound so similar as these imo.

For what its worth, I think (in-universe anyway) that Anakin's force ghost was his younger self because it was before he truly "died" becoming Vader. Back when he was a pure and good Jedi. Out-of-universe, it was obviously because of the prequels and Lucas wanted to nod to them.

Imagine if Book 5 revealed that Lord Voldemort was actually James Potter, that Harry's father was still alive. Voldemort wasn't actually trying to kill his son, he wanted to recruit him to be his apprentice. It is funny that there are some superficial commonalities between the narratives though. Probably mosty has to do with both being very close to the typical "Hero's Journey" arc that forms the basis for almost all narratives about heroic individuals. There are only like 6 different kinds of stories we can tell anyway too. All we can really do is tell variations of the same stories, and no matter how original a story may seem to you, it's going to have a lot of similarities to other stories that have alredy been told.

I hadn't heard of the hero with a thousand faces, but I was thinking halfway through this that it was really just that they both subscribe to common tropes in their genre. What I think is more interesting is the way Anakin Skywalker is a something of a tragic-hero in a way that Voldemort is not. For this though I think you have to consider Anakin and Darth Vader as one and the same. Here, Anakin is raised up with the hopes of a hero, demonstrates greatness, succumbs to evil, but is redeemed through his death at the end. This is why many people have compared him to Othello. This being central to the story of Star Wars, I think, holds it out as being different to Harry Potter, despite the number of similarities. I also think that to separate Anakin from Vader robs the potential power of his redemption and the layers of character development, which again is something Voldemort does not really have. I sound like I'm defending Star Wars against Harry Potter here, when actually I much prefer Harry Potter, I just think the difference I've highlighted here is substantive to the story. Now I'm not a steeped in Star Wars lore(law?) as I am HP as I've only ever watched the films so perhaps there are things I'm missing from other parts of the Star Wars universe that might affect what I've typed here.
