Join me on an explore of the long abandoned Kirkthorpe Locks & stretch of the Aire & Calder Navigation that was disused in the early 1800's. We also take a look at an old abandoned Boat House on Half Moon Lake & Old Park Farm that was used as a Falconry centre for the Harry Potter films located nearby.

Thanks for the history. I've walked down the site of the abandoned house a few times and wondered what it had been. I'm shocked at the rate of deterioration in such a short amount of time. Being local to the area, I'm loving your channel

My neck of the woods. Used to live in the cottages at Stanley Ferry. We used to walk over that weir as teenagers and swim in the rapids below. Wouldn’t bother nowadays like haha. Seeing it in flood is spectacular.

When I was a lad :-) in Holbeck. Set pots, Dolly tubs, Mangles and Scrubbing Boards were commonplace. Thrilling tales of yesteryear :-) They were v hard work, but in those days things got v dirty with all the soot and grime, even hanging them out to dry could be hazardous, so when brought in they could be in worse shape then before. Thanks, keep it up - Jn

David Hector, amazing! I remember walking this section with him as part of Carlton Scout Troop in the late 1990s and been told all about it by David. He's a great bloke who took us on many great adventures in the area as kids, I appreciated my time with the scouts and I remember finding this walk very fascinating back then and stuck with me until this day! Great to see the lock in such good conditions still, keep up the great work.

Few other local features on a wider loop walk Heath>KIrkthorpe>Newland>Stanley Ferry>Heath -Heath stone watertower -Old stone quarry(Hidden in the Ash Tips/ Pits, mini climb to reach it. - Medieval St Peters (Kirkthorpe) - Newland Hall Ruin - the Wakefield Notorious Blue Bridge, 2nd only to Chantry Bridge. On a serious note; if the river is high dont be in that area! It floods & floods fast.

I am from Wakefield born and bred wow Stanley .. my uncle lived there its a nice place and love the River Calder and I never knew about Harry Potter either lol. Been many times to Stanley Ferry its wonderful there. My mum always used to say dont go to the half moon as lots of kids were drowning so what did he do? He defied her and went swimming there and luckily he was ok but we were not allowed to go there as kids .. Its weird to think that the farm has ben destroyed since the Harry Potter movie with the farmers birds in the movie. There's just a ruin left now wow. Never knew he was done for animal cruelty and the things you learn so he was mistreating the birds then hmmm . THANK YOU DAVID and thank you Darren xx

We explored the farm house probably about 12 years ago just when people had ripped the aluminium covers off the doors, at the time very intact on all storys but very dated interior, as time went by on subsequent visits a lot of stuff had been stolen, one of the outbuildings had a kiln in it too, along with the roosting areas for the birds, haven't been recently, but from your great video there's not much remaining

My parents council house built in 1947 had an outhouse with a gas powered boiler tub for washing clothes supplied by the council. So a post WW2 version of the setpot. The houses were part of the homes for heroes for returning veterans and their family. Also the scheme offered employment opportunities for veterans too. The houses were extremely well built (much better than the later council builds or indeed the modern private house builders products) and are sought after today when they come up for sale.

The boathouse. I’m thinking that next to the tunnel there might have been a wooden pier come out into the water parallel to the arch. And that’s where you boarded the rowboat and when not in use the row boat would be pushed into the covered arch area, chained up, to protect it from elements. To get it back out you’d walk into the pier and pull it out level with you.
