40 plus years later and they are all brilliant. When Peter Sellers died, Harry sang "Bread of Heaven" at the funeral. Spike said to his manager "I hope Harry goes before me because I don't want him singing that song at my funeral". Harry did die before Spike but when the latter died his manager phoned up Secombe's widow and got a recording of the song which she played at his funeral. Humour to the last.
Great share Howard! Timeless, genius in its simplicity, the kind of spontaneous laughs in a group of friends when the giggles spark more giggles in a virtuous spiral to fall-on-floor, tears-in-your eyes, belly laughter! A tonic for the human spirit these 2 gents are, as is Parky.
I took a bus to see him in Auckland at this time. I was thé youngest person in thé audience which sadly unsettled those around me. NZ.... nothing changes.
I agree 100% I am 88 years old NEW ZEALANDER residing in Philippines now and my younger brother and I used to "take off" almost all of Harry's, (Neddy), "Spike" Milligan, and Terry's shows every Saturday night at our parent's house after footy (rugby) - they were our favourite comedians and we reckoned Harry was the greatest tenor singer in the world.- of course my Mum was pure blooded Welsh so we were a bit biased. But they were great days and I enjoy youtube videos which I have discovered here. Especially i enjoy his Christian songs and hymns - pure majic and authentic - and he inspires both me and my fiancee as we look forward to serving the LORD in his plan/mission for us. Harry's singing of "The Holy City" is unmatched by any other singer of any generation in my opinion. RIP Harry - your quick wit, your humour and your magnificent singing will never die.
Spike is so, so funny. I saw him do a one man show at Balmain, Sydney. The entire audience was in hysterics from beginning to end. It was unbelievable.
This video of Harry and spike Should be an NHS prescription for anyone who is depressed.. It can't fail to lift your spirits and make you laugh. God bless them
I'm 62 years young and I've very nearly just coughed up my lungs from laughing at Spike, jump to 19:55, in these difficult times he can still bring much needed sunshine to our lives, we all need to like and share, I'm sure there are more people out there that need cheering up :)
Oh My 43 years ago A much ‘simpler’ time When you watched Parkinson on a Saturday night with people like Spike and laughed so much it would give you belly ache In this ‘woke’ world of today no one is allowed to laugh I’m 59 😀😀😃😃👍 👍 🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🏴🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
harry left the best part of the gun story out,WHEN SPIKE POPPED HIS HEAD IN THE BACK OF THE WAGON AND ASKED HAS ANYONE SEEN A GUN HARRY REPLIED "WHAT COLOUR WAS IT"....PURE COMEDY GENIUS!
How marvelous to see this clip of our Harry.Wonderful talented funny man.A household name in years gone by. How I miss all these characters from yester year.
I had forgotten just how funny Harry Secombe was. I remember them all on the Goon Show and the Telly Goons, I even go back to a time when Michael Bentine was part of the team. Spike Milligna, the well known typing error, wrote some damned funny books: but his Q series of comedies were barking mad at times. Peter Sellers was a comedy genius, of course. They all had me in tears more than once.
I was so lucky to grow up listening to these wonderful men. Seems like a lifetime ago. Laughing with sad and happy tears at the moment. What an interviewer Parkinson was too.
I discovered the Goons as a teenager; one of the local public radio stations used to broadcast two episodes back-to-back every week. Even when the gags came too fast to follow, or I didn't get one of the references, their energy and sense of fun swept me up. Been fan ever since, nigh on 40 years now.
Great interview, Parkinson always lets his guest take centre stage, he knows its about them not like some of today's interviewers who just will not shut up. Harry was a great Welshman with a fine tenor voice and of course one of the Goons a show to which I was addicted. Thanks for posting.
My God Harry and Spike' laugh I've nearly split me sides, two of the funniest men to ever grace this planet and Harrys Voice that man can sing with Sutch power every time he performed on Songs of Praise Thay had to have the builders in. gone too soon.
Memories of sitting with my mother laughing at the Goon Show, and my father just could not see anything funny in it!. Don't think my father's family ever laughed together, unfortunately.
Mr Secombe was a gift to all with his beautiful and distinct voice. I purchased his LP and played it many times and listened with Awe at the quality of his voice. A great man. Much missed.
Trust Spine Mulligun to steal the show at the end! I’ve been laughing for a full 5mins. It was a fantastic interview from Neddy of Wales also. Love seeing new old clips after all these years.
It is sadly, a very rare thing these days for me to laugh out loud and ache from that laughter, Milligan bless his heart has had that affect upon me for over half a century and far from diminishing the laughs and aches get even stronger with time, much needed right now, bless you Spike and then there is Harry. Many years ago I had the great fortune to be his driver while he was filming a TV show in Devon where I lived at the time. We talked a lot on those drives, I took him to a few hidden away Churches which he loved, told him how my mum had passed a few months before and how so much she loved his voice and how much I learned to love it through listening to the records with her. He said some wonderful things which I won’t share, they are too precious to me but I will say, they shone a bright light on some very dark days. Bless you Harry, bless you.
OH how this takes me back! Sitting in front of the fire at my uncle's home in West Wickham, Kent, where I used to spend my holidays from boarding school, listening to the Goon Show! Such happy times. Laughter is truly the best of medicines!
Brilliant! I don’t think Barry and Gough knew what was happening! Loved the Goons! Lots of memories listening to them on ABC as a youngster. Parky is a brilliant host and simply allows his guests to be themselves and joins in the mirth! Thanks for posting!
I loved Harry Secomb, he was just such a funny man with a lovely voice, even as a kid i thought he was brilliant watching this 47 years later i can see why i liked him so much.. I cried when he passed away
Oh God he was the best. That long ago and those two, such lovely spirits never stilled. At 76 myself and American still left me aching with laughter from seeing them loose it to the ridiculousness.
Watched an episode of Harry's show. Had an American singer on who really fancied himself. He san the first verse of the song they were to sing together, then Harry joined in, hardly any effort that wonderful voice just drowned the tinny yank. Brilliant
Stupendously funny. Spike has been cracking me up since I was a nipper. Great to see Harry and parkie as I remember him. The best chat show host ever . And Barry Tuckwell was the reason I became a horn player, as he was for many of my generation of players. A great player .
Pike Smilligan & Barry Seafront were effervescent in their philosophy of comedy and they transcended their time.. Brilliant men.. Parky was erudite and a humble host.. My late dad was a huge fan... I grew up with the noog show... Loved the goons.. I'm off to get my prostate nipped out...
iv allways loved spike and harry but this program took the bloody cake it was absolutely hilarious thankyou so much for bringing back memories from when i was a young girl oohh my god it was good i cried with laughter 😂😂😂😂😍😍😍❤❤❤❤❤❤🌈☔️🌈☔️🌈☔️🇦🇺🙋🍰🍰🍰🍓🍒🫐🍇🍧🌻i loved it and you gave me a wonderfull memory discovery of something that was hiddenfor years genuine comedy with genuine genius oh my god im just coming down from so much fun and tears and laughter thankyou again so much 🇦🇺🙋😂😅🙏
Poor old Gough, he didn't know what to do with Spike. I loved the goons, and Spikes Q series. real comics, real humour and pure enjoyment. sadly Harry, Spike, and Gough (an old friend) all gone
I met Harry Secombe twice. The first time was when I went with my family to see a recording of the goon show at the BBC studios. The second time was when I was a page boy at what was then called the talk of the town the old Hippodrome theater in Leicester square. Both times He shook hands with me and was the most genuinely friendly personality I have met.
Over 63 years ago (age 6) Sundays would include Church at 10am followed by our weekly roast dinner followed by listening to the BBC Goon Show on Nan's 1953 Pye P75 Valve/Tube Radio. Spike has always been my favorite, the zaniest of the lot...🤣
I remember as a young apprentice after I had moved from Coffs Harbour to Sydney as there were no apprenticeships in Coffs in the 1950s, the Goon Show became an anchor for a lonely country lad. If I met up with my brother and his fellow university mates we would speak in "Goon". I well remember one Coffs lad had his arm in plaster so i said "Have an accident?" to which his immediate reply was "No thanks, I've just had one" and so we would behave like a bunch of idiots whenever together. I once paid for a taxi to get me home in time for the "Goon Show" and believe me, an apprentice's wage was very small back in the 1950s. I think we were all delightfully made because of this wonderful show. I still occasionally from a CD several of the Goon Shows I have, and my own children never laugh. Is there something wrong with them?
Spike and Harry were, as advertised, fantastic. Fun fact, I attended a leadership symposium about 25 years ago where Gough was a guest speaker. He was legless drunk and after rambling past his allotted time, was escorted off the stage by security. He hadn't managed a single coherent sentence but was allowed to run his time due to his status as ex-PM.
Spike looked pretty toasted in that clip but, fair play to him, he was hilarious. Impressive leadership symposium where the organisers left a famously alcoholic war vet in the vicinity of large amounts of booze prior to speaking :p as opposed to organising a series of small group chats and book signings beforehand to positively fill up the time. They could have made plans, took control of the situation as it unfolded and 'led' for want of a better word. But, well, I'm sure Gough still got his fee.
Harry never finished the Peter Sellers funeral story. Spike wrote about in one of his war diaries . Peter hated 'In the Mood' by Glen Miller and he would sent copies of it for xmas to people he disliked. He also bought all the copies that a record shop had on the shelves, paid for them and broke them on the on the counter and asked the assistant to throw them in the bin. At his funeral it was reported the Spike and Harry were crying when they played it .Milligan said later they were actually crying with laughter. I recommend Spikes war diaries for any fans of his humour .
@@freespeechoneeach 😂 There's a lot of us about mate 😅 .I've been a Spike fan all my adult life Graham ,got all his books and seen all the Goon films . A genius who was of course mentor to Monty Python. Only got an honorary knighthood because he never registered as British citizen despite nearly giving his life in WW2 .Always been my favourite comedian.
I would recommend you look up Harry's version of Nessun Dorma, he sang it in the film Davy. That was so funny, today's comedians are a bit like a dose of the metric miles. I wish we had more people like Harry and Spike today.
Ohh what a show Magnificent. Gough allowed my wife to become a citizen only 2 years after she came here. He was at the ceremony at Liverpool and made it his business to introduce himself to both of us/ A true blue Aussie
It's so much fun watching Harry laughing when Spike first walks on. You can see him thinking "Oh, God, what's he going to do now?" shortly followed by "No idea, but it'll be disturbingly funny in ways that only this wonderful lunatic is able to create".
2022, post Covid, war in Europe ,country on the brink ..and i spot this made me grin and my face ached..did he say a touch of the mystic miles when he tried to sit down..Awesome comedy...
I've read all of Spike's books about his military service, and they are funny as hell. The story about Harry and Spike meeting is actually in one of the books that Spike wrote about his military service, I just don't remember which.
My father was friends with Harry and if he was in Wales, cardiff he would call and swop music sheets . They went to the same voice trainer he is sadly missed. As my dad is. 😊
