What I think is interesting about this scene is how ordinary Haruhi's little backstory. It's just a normal experience of realizing how unspecial your life is and how boring it tends towards being. But while most people are content to meld into the humdrum of life, even if they complain about it, Haruhi wants to grab life by the balls and FORCE it to be interesting. Her circumstances don't stand out at all, just the way that she reacts to them.

This moment right here. This is why Haruhi does the crazy shit she does. Ironic how a girl who doesn't view herself or her world to be anything special is oddly enough the most special person in the entire universe. Dramatic irony at It's finest.

People may look similar and lead similar lives, but there's a lot more uniqueness in our existence than Haruhi seems to realize. Considering the full scope of time and space, each of us are actually quite unique. For instance, if you were born in a developed country within the last 100 years, you probably understand more about how the universe works than 99% of all humans who have ever lived. If you were born in the last 20 years, there's a good chance you'll live long enough to see humanity either evolve into a different form entirely, or destroy itself in the process. Each culture and each generation are unique, and the rate of change is accelerating. Regardless, having an ego that balks at the idea of being similar to others is among the least unique things about humans. People who feel valuable are happier, and one metric by which humans intuitively measure worth is scarcity. However, if you apply that intuition to something as abstract as "uniqueness," it's really just a cognitive bias toward depression. TLDR: Haruhi, get over yourself and you'll cheer up.

"Considering the full scope of time and space, each of us are actually quite unique. For instance, if you were born in a developed country within the last 100 years, you probably understand more about how the universe works than 99% of all humans who have ever lived." That isn't a convincing argument at all regarding to this monologue, because you are still implying that those humans in a certain period/society are a homogeneous collective, and that's exactly Haruhi's problem: the lack of individual agency and sense of wonder in a modern society where many things are already "given" or "solved" (like the example you gave about the universe), making you feel as an insignificant passive functionary in something that is much bigger and important than you. Her rambling and alienation makes more sense when you consider Japan's collectivistic society. The best thing about this show is the dialectic understanding of both character, neither was completely wrong or right in their stances on modern life, but managed to come to terms with themselves and find something better by sharing each one's virtue: Haruhi's quirky and esoteric quest for significance and freedom and Kyon's acceptation of societal customs.
@ca-ke9493
@ca-ke9493 4 года назад
Both characters, I feel has a mutual understanding of the melancholy of that fact that life is horrifically mundane, and both characters resent that fact. Thats what connects haruhi and kyon. But while Haruhi outwardly expresses her despise for it and actively seeks to rebel against normalcy, Kyon chooses to give in to the mundane life and fit into that lifestyle. Ultimately the way forward is to get over yourself and appreciate and craft your own unique balance of life, but as teenagers are, the characters are simply not yet at that stage, they still look at life revolving around them, which makes life dull and uninteresting. They are however, taking steps to do so by entertaining themselves and forming friendships and truly care for people outside of themselves.

We can take some solace in our uniqueness at least. The sheer number of variables that describe each of us guarantees our singularity among 7 billion. Even the terribly unoriginal among us have some facets that they do not share with the rest of their group. On the other hand, that makes us prone to loneliness and less likely to feel understood, something Haruhi struggles with.

I don't understand this take, Miss Suzumiua. If you're one of millions of people in the world, then you should be proud of how unique you are, not feel ashamed that you're just one small percentage of the populace. As many people as there are in the world, there'll never be anyone exactly like you. So that's something to take solace in.

I think the way she sees it is although no one person is the same many share many characteristics or traits or views regardless of minor trivial differences the way she's seeing it what good is it to be objectively different when those differences you can name on one hand
@imthebossmermaid3648
@imthebossmermaid3648 2 месяца назад
@@usernotfound1191 You're inherently unique, because you're you. Those minute, trivial characteristics matter, because they're what make you who you are. You should be proud of that. I still don't understand her point of view, or why she'd complain about it.
@usernotfound1191
@usernotfound1191 2 месяца назад
@imthebossmermaid3648 maybe she desires something greater than herself or the knowledge of something greater and unknown so by association that makes her wholeheartedly and unabashedly unique because by knowing or associating and further seeking that unique thing once discovered gives her the confidence in life she currently doesn't have haruhi is after all a young teenager so for her to not have her identity and things figured out is par for the course it's part of what makes this story interesting to me because the story is the story of her development and making sense of life in its normal ways and its absurdities despite not having the existence of the thing she craves and her going to arrive at whatever conclusion she does eventually reach is hopefully a postive one that leaves her satisfied with her small differences in the grand scope but still seeking ambition in life that has her confident in the value of said existence but i think she feels it can only be a justified existence if it has never or can't be replicated because for some people they cant accept the fact that reality is filled with similar situations and things that really arent all that unique and i think she falls into that camp its just the way her brain is wired cant accept or refuses that possibility because it denies her of her own value at least in her eyes so needs something that will make her gain value to herself that's the logical conclusion my brain has reached on the matter and the way I think she sees things at least lol

I can think one or two things: 1. feeling somewhat understood after a long time of alienation was a shock to her so she wanted to give an impression 2. A "regular human" recognized one of her weird antics so she ditched it thinking it wasn't interesting anymore.

Welcome to adulthood. You realize that the world doesn't revolve around you and that you are no more special than anyone else. Yes, exceptional humans exist. And not being one of them is most probable. Are we really supposed to sympathize with her? She has not had a difficult or unpleasant life. She states herself that she has lived the way that everyone else has. She couldn't find excitement in her everyday life and her everyday friends. So what? Boredom is part of the human condition. It does not excuse you acting like an arrogant prick.
