He used to be an owner of a jazz bar before becoming a writer. The sound, rythym and whatsoever of the language matters to him. Kaerukun is one of my best stories. Nice voice!
I just finished reading Norwegian woods, there is something about murakami writing which draws me to read again and again. Such vivid writing of murakami helps me to complete 400pages in 4 days.
So lucky!! if I were to sit in that lecture hall, I would clear all my doubts of his books at one shot. I really want to know what he truly meant in all his books!
Haruki is the best ever, his magic world is so beautiful that I would love to never leave it. He keeps healing my soul oevr and over again. I can't wait for Norwegian Wood to come out!
Thanks for the clip; shame about the quality, but a great unique gem nonetheless. Murakami has to be one of the coolest writers living today, both his style of writing and the man himself. More people in the west need to become aware of his fantastic and fantastical novels. If you live in the UK most libraries stock several of his books:-)
well, he was a translator. He translated many western novels. I just finished reading one his book for the first time. Based on how he writes, he seems like a very intelligent guy. Now, I'm starting on another called After Dark.
its very interesting to find a japanese author has opportunities in the us to deliver lectures on literary works.i like reading murakamis works, including norwegian wood, hear the wind sing, pinball, and windup chronicle. i believe he wrote a book based on his lectures in the us about japanese authors of old times, and i pretty much enjoy that. japanese novels really show well about who they are.
I have been studied English from my highschool days. I could not speak or listen to English at all when I was high school student, and even in the university. Because I have come to the U.S. as a exchange student, now I can understand what Murakami says, who is the best novelist in Japan. I am very glad now.
For so long I have disliked fanatics of cults and institutions for their pointless ravings and sometimes utterly outrageous forms of idolatry, but never have I realized that I could be one if not for Murakami. Reading his books have made me feel like we have the same thoughts and aspirations. It's as if there's a thin line between his and my mind across where I am and Japan. His words made me feel he is my bestfriend, lifetime partner (no sexual attachment though), brother, and my self.
Murakami's writing is very alluring. "The Little Match Girl " by H Christian Andersen and Murakami's "Super Frog saves Tokyo" are my two all-time favorite short stories.
Yesterday I finished that book. It was my first murakami book. The book was so smooth with it's unnatural plot. For me mr. Toru okada is a real person. He has that power , murakami is really a master in storytelling.
Haruki Murakami is great; I was amazed when i read his book, After darK; So I decided to give it as price in my competition, to share this feeling. watch at my channel , the video "Haruki Murakamy, My Give Away "
I'm going to make the story, from this auto-critique, the title is "Super frog saves Tokyo". I wrote this story five years ago, and near the 2000, and when I caught freed frogs, so I don't feel okay. And in the first phase, I write a first few [faytees?] in Japanese, and after that I repeat in English the same part. Many of you don't understand Japanese at all, it's my great controllation, but still I would like to do it. Because I write the [apros?], just write, I play music, I used be an owner of a jazz bar in Tokyo before I became a writer. So music is a lot to me, and sun, and reason, and free info organization. I look around a lot of things on the driving, on music, so I'll be good appreciate as silent until you ??? Japanese writing. Of course the English translation of this story is great, I have to say because Jay is here, Jay is the translator. But honestly, he translate ????? English translation, he is a great translator. But still, the language is different from each other, and sun is different for each other, you know. So I would like to read in Japanese first, and few tips, ?? in English the same part, and I'll be take a rest. {Japanese reading} So is it, and I'll repeat in English the same part {English reading} END
Oh holy crap! I had no idea this would actually be him! I always pictured Murakami as some old sage looking guy (don't know why, just my impression). I would have been honoured to be there.
@memphis3106 Did you mean "Please Japanese people, if you're reading, don't let the Japanese do a film adaptation and destroy Murakami's work"? I don't see a film being particularly pernicious, unless people see the film before reading the book. Which will probably be at least some people. =[
I like Murakami but sometimes (too often) he recycles parts of stories in his novel, word for word. If the design is to befuddle the reader and make them think they bought haft a book instead of a fully one, I would say that style is well-marketed. He writes American novels that pander to a crowd. If he gets a Nobel Prize, or Mc Donald's gets a Michelin star, then you know the world is really gone down in taste.
This is the most bullshit comment I have ever read in RU-vid. recycles stories? word by word? lol, how many books by him have you ever read? give me one example about that particular recycles and I bet your head will get blank as hell. clearly you have no idea about what you're talking about!!! murakami is genius writer and he really deserved to be a nobel prize winner, no contest. and btw your metaphor is so lame and irrelevant! shame on you.
Okay lets be careful here. I think its fair to use the same thing over and over again, as long as the writer enjoy writing it and the reader enjoy reading it. Look at his sales and awards, must tell you something
I agree with the Colonel's comment - Licia Ninh is talking bullshit here. I've read ALL of his translated works, and NOTHING is "recycled." Perhaps, Licia, you should take a few years away from writing silly comments and actually go read some of the works. Murakami is definitely on the Nobel Prize short list. He certainly deserves the prize, whether or not he actually ever wins it. He's certainly more deserving than any number of recent recipients I could name. His characters in particular stay with me as long or longer than any other living writer I can think of. That's pretty amazing.
Agreed. Murakami is brilliant, but he's still a populist and the themes have been recycled a dozen times. This is NOT a criticism. He is a GREAT writer, however, maybe not Nobel Prize Great. Leave that to Kawabata, the first Japanese writer to receive the Nobel prize.
