Harun al-Rashid & Al-Mamun, The Patrons of the Golden Age

May the victims of Christchurch massacre be blessed in afterlife and may Allah bring peace to their families and loved ones.
Together, Harun al-Rashid and Al-Mamun started a tradition of funding research in the Islamic world. They were, by no means, the only patrons. Many Emirs and Sultans, all around the Muslim world sponsored scholars but these two were the ones who started it all. Their successors carried these traditions for the next five hundred years till they handled the baton to the Europeans.

I have heard of muslins contribution to science and mathematics, but never imagined it was of this level and scale. There's a reason the Renaissance started in southern Europe. Those are the places that had the greatest influence from Islamic scholarship. I'm surprised you didn't mention this in the video, but without the Islamic preservation and expansion of classical knowledge, there would likely be NO Renaissance, or at least not for a long time. By extension, no Enlightenment. We would be living in a very different world. The House of Wisdom rescued European and Middle Eastern civilization from the great losses of knowledge during the Medieval period. It is entirely possible we would be a thousand years behind without those diverse and prolific scholars.

American here digging into history and learning more every day, and about Islam and all other religions, much love and respect to all, Its like were all distracted by modern day life, going to our jobs, learning our jobs, amusement parks, movies, so much to entertain people's minds one way or the other, or arguing about politics and religion, ways to almost blind us, and when you try to talk with people they just say that's not my problem or I got my own stuff to worry about, I grew up in a catholic religion and started questioning things by 10 or 12, but why is everyone else wrong grandma?, or why dont we learn about others and thier history, so many sheep just follow the heard, I dont know if I'm catholic or whatever anymore, on the inside I always knew I was just supposed to help and respect all, and love one another, we might have different thoughts about many things, but think about this whoever is reading this, ( you and I are driving towards each other on a road somewhere and we both pull up on the scene of a car accident that just happened, what's your first thought ?, I would like to think both you and I would both go help the people hurt in the accident, and work together, thanks for the video and very well done, always enjoy learning more and about Islam, and respect to all

You know, hearing about the Golden Age of Islam, and comparing it to most of the Islamic countries now... I just feel sad. Like how did most become so backwards today? Here, you have Caliphs wanting and seeking knowledge from all sources, regardless of which faith it comes from, and yet now some are rejecting such notions and are closing themselves off to knowledge. What has happened to them?

American funded Wahhabism. Also outside bad faith actors. A good example is PKK influences that caused separatism in Alevi-Bektashism. Like the little to no people that know that there is Alevi-Bektashis in Iran who were forcibly absorbed in to mainstream twelvers post-79’. Or that there are Alevis who aren’t Kurds or Turks. Nationalism being infused into Islam the only ones immune to this in my opinion are Nizari Ismaili bc they don’t have any established presence outside of maybe Gujarat (in a country which isn’t Muslim majority).

All of them, plus the Phoenicians, and many others, had manifested, before Islamic culture, the same human tendency: Connection. Just Remixing is just fine, as you said, Nations & Human connection changed & worked together for more than 4000 years And being truthful, prosperous, & effectively peaceful is all I ask for from a nation. Why than, should you sin to the truth, simply to assert unsubstantiated Islamic exceptionalism? As Bernard Lewis' statement does.

@salmanahmadabbasi6791
@salmanahmadabbasi6791 5 лет назад
Islam didnt banned freedom of intellect. You can see in this video also the house of wisdom was founded by Harun. And Harun is credited as a Dervish Caliph. He is considered a saint by the muslims. The mutazillah's objective was indeed extremist thats why scholars had to counter such idiotic statements. If it wasnt the case i guess they wont even bothered them. The mutazillah, when they questioned the status of Quran, actually wanted to prove that it was just a creation and like all other creations it will see its death. So anything mortal cant be taken so seriously to run your entire life and govern three continents on it. And yes it was just liked a failed attempt of French Revolution (mostly in case of church vs state theatre). The irony in their statements was that their whole argument was to oppose the thing from which their own argument was based. The moratality of creation was a concept derived from Quran and they took this concept from Quran to question the immoratlity of Quran. All other rationals nowadays do the same thing. I guess Rationality about religion is itself based upon such confused thoughts. Well both these fundamentalism and rationalism form a great balance in the world. The conflict is the mother of innovations. Good luck to both
@TheTariqibnziyad
@TheTariqibnziyad 5 лет назад
@@salmanahmadabbasi6791 you cant talk about freedom of intellect with threats and name calling, cuz they were called "Zanadika" and "couffar" which encouraged the populace to kill them, and that is what ended all scientifique progress, since doubting even the Quran and God's existance is allowed in the the scientique method, and not in islam, huge difference.
@salmanahmadabbasi6791
@salmanahmadabbasi6791 5 лет назад
@@TheTariqibnziyad We dont consider defaming and degrading religion as a freedom of intellect. Thats evil and should be treated alike. You have so much to discuss. You can show your freedom of intellect in subjects like astronomy, medicine, mathematics, physics, chemistry. Why dont you apply your scientific method there? Scientific method is applied to science. Spiritual method is applied to theology. And i consider science as a subset of Divine knowledge. Its Not superior. Its erroneous and is subjected to constant evolution. Wheres religion is pure and complete. Its period of evolution ended with the finality of prophethood on Muhammad SAW.

You seem to give the Mutazella too much credit. One of main reasons the Mutazella flourished in court is because of the ruling family wanting to centralize power and to develop blind loyalty. When the Mutazella were in power, they were easily able to justify the rulers' tyranny by their "rational over revelation" mindset. Their thought was enforced upon the population and any opposer was prosecuted. The freedom of intellectual persuit did not begin with the Mutazella, and did not end with them (I could even say that it wasn't available when the Mutazella were in power). Scientific and free-thought developments started to become large at the end of the Ummayad's reign in the Middle East (Hisham and Umar II promoted such developments), and It ended with Ottomans conquering the region. Free-thought was not banned (you've suggested that it was) when Islam was institutionalised (which happened before and after the Mutazella period). it may have even flourished because of the nature of mainstream Sunni thought which is that every madhab(sect) is an ijtihad(hard-work) that is valid, and every thought that doesn't sound mainstream can be refuted, and if it can't be then it may as well be true. Mutazella thought was not known to be prosecuted. It just faded over time because it wasn't based on any systematic logic and couldn't create good arguements.
@REDDEADANDGTACLUB
@REDDEADANDGTACLUB 5 лет назад
@@salmanahmadabbasi6791 The criticism of religion is extremely important in finding truth. Many scholars throughout the Islamic history questioned mainstream Islamic thought, some even questioned Islam itself (such as Al-Ma'arri). Only in criticism can we create arguements that can be refuted or validated.

Mu‘tazilism should be the role model for smth like a European Islam in my opinion. We could actually convert to Mu‘tazilistic Islam and prove that rationality and religion can be perfectly united. If they see the Quran as something that was created instead of something that cannot be changed until eternity, they should be revived and supported. It would solve 99% of the problems with integration of muslims into Western societies.

but they were not secular and liberals as according to them the Muslim who committed a major sin was one between a state of belief and disbelief we think the fall of civilization is not due to one factor for the Abbassids it was the decentralization ,the introducing of Turkic slave soldiers who immensely gave powerful and when they became sultans they did not gave importance to philosophy and science as the Arabs did except for the Seljuks and they had another backdrop dividing the empire among the sons of the sultan and finally the sack of Baghdad

But in reallity it was Fredrick Barbarossa that was the first Holy Roman emperor. It was during his regin the holy was added. It was simpla known as Roman Empire.

Just an advice if you are open to it... Your video is great but there is too much of personal opinion in each of your videos which makes every video biased from your conception of the world and history. Try to reduce personal opinions to as minimal as possible so that each video may reach farther audiences as it could and let the public decide for themselves on how to interpret historic events

This video was edited magnificently, however, I did want to note that you did not mention some very crucial events. Such as the tragedy of Fakh, where roughly 300 of the decendants of the Holy Prophet were martyred whist trying to resist the unfair treatment by the Abbasid Governers. Leading to Harun Al-Rashid to dispatch an army of 4000 to kill them. Also, the martyrdom of Imam Musa al-Kadhim by Harun al-Rashid was not mentioned. He imprisoned him for over a decade and in the end commanded for him to be poisioned. This was a descendant of the Holy Prophet. Musa ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hussein, ibn Ali wa Fatima ibn Rasoolallah. Lastly, you did not mention the forceful migration by Al-Mamun of Imam Musa al Kadhims son Imam Ali ibn Musa al Ridha, from Medina to Marv. And was forcefully made the crown prince simply to consolidate power over the Shia as well who mainly resisted the khilafah. I definently think the things mentioned in your video is great and showed that those Caliphs did great things for Muslims, but I kindly ask that you also show their dark side as well. All love Ma'salaam

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته ‎ May Allah ‎ﷻ reward you for your efforts. And as a regular viewer of your content, I have a criticism, At 7:40 mins you mentioned that the Quran created dispute being a stupid argument. It seems you are unaware or you seem to have shrugged off as to why this was a big issue. The Quran created argument has a lot to do with establishing coherence and cogency in maintaining the over all belief of Islam. 1) al ma’mūn was trying to establish himself by showing that the ulema are stupid and hence device this argument to win himself as the flag bearer of intellect even when it comes to religion 2) unfortunately he was outdone by a wali of Allah ‎ﷻ, whose name has rahimuAllah uttered after it by millions today, and had the largest janaza attendance in history of Islam for a single person. 3) this led to the rise of the ulema, of Sunnah, and Islam today is preserved via them by Allah ‎ﷻ. 4) this argument if ma’mun had won, then Isa being a word who is also God would have been the slippery slope. Since ma’mun was wrong in his Quran created theory , and is logically and scripturally proven, we have shut the doors for Christians to slip in this argument to claim they are not doing shirk. 5) the Quran is Allah ‘s kalaam, hence to call it a created thing is diminishing what the Quran is and its sanctity. This is one of the goals which the rulers wanted as they can now being created just like the Quran also claim to represent God in earth. Any ways, bottom line, it’s unacademic and quiet immature to say that it was a stupid argument. If you don’t understand it, you could just say “topic for another day” instead of imposing your ignorance on the subject as the default. This is a criticism, and a slightly harsh one , hope you take it to its best benefit and I only mean good for you and those who watch your videos. May Allah ‎ﷻ increase us in knowledge and may He guide us all.

@hymnisphear 4 года назад
The term Qur'an and Kalaam both bear two meanings thus the Orthodox regards that the Qur'an meaning the Kalaam (uncreated Attribute of Speech) is uncreated like all of the Attributes of Allah. The Qur'an when it refers to the revealed text is created and authored by by Allah and revealed through Jibril عليه السلام. Thus the argument is more complicated than you realize. However you are obviously nonreligious, most likely atheist thus your understanding is severely flawed and without merit.
@hymnisphear
@hymnisphear 3 года назад
If one denies that Allah is attributed with an uncreated attribute that is called Kalaam or Qur'an then you are not a Muslim. There is a reason why the Mu'tazilah went virtually extinct. They are not truly part of the ummah of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم if one wants the salvation of the hereafter one must be upon the belief of Ahlu Sunnah wal Jama'ah and they are the Ashaa'irah and Maturidiyah.

@hymnisphear
@hymnisphear 3 года назад
@@vannakinder352 I didn't confirm that he was an atheist rather I speculated as much because of several reasons. 1 practicing Muslims whenever we mention the name of the Prophet صل الله عليه وسلم we send salaat upon him as I just did in this sentence as this is proper manners and he never did. 2. He oversimplified the argument that I was obliged to correct and we are regarded as sinful for speaking without knowledge. 3. He discounted Issue as a trivial argument as if both sides were merely engaging in useless bickering when one side was advocating a belief that takes its adherents outside of Islam and the other was protecting the religion of the common people. If he is a Muslim I pray he learns and becomes more careful, pious and is beneficial to us all. If he is not Muslim then I pray he is guided to Islam and then everything else I previously mentioned is established. May Allah guide us all. Ps. I have no idea why you brought up ISIS.
