See, I don’t get it. Her own research shows that the gap is due to individual choices. If that’s the case, and not due to systemic prejudices, why the drive to still weed it out? Western civilization is great because of individualism. That each person has unique thoughts, ideas and worth. But in the last couple decades we seem to be putting a hyper focus on collectivism. I don’t get it.

because those individual choices aren’t made in a vacuum. if in the 80s people constantly told women that they only really had a place in certain occupations, then those women during that time (and now, when they are in their careers) are obviously going to favor those occupations, which in most cases were lower paying. And yes, women getting paid less because they choose to have kids is probably still bad. We should be encouraging building families, not discouraging it.

@@yodieyuh You say “oh it’s the women can be anything era” but it’s really not. Just because people on social media are saying that doesn’t mean that everybody believes that- parents (who are an important influence on career choices) can still hold the same prejudiced notions and so can employers. Even with initiatives like Girls who Code, looking at the demographics of computer scientists, 80% of them are men. Looking at the demographics of a profession like nursing, almost 86% of them are women. The fact is that even though our culture has become much more progressive, it takes people a good amount of time to get into their career- if they go to college, it’s automatically 20+ years. It’s possible that that cohort of women will magically carry over 0 discrimination, but it’s unlikely.

@seandowney6216 You can say “oh they should get paid less if they have children,” but personally, I think building a family is an important part of being an American and helping fix how unstable our society is currently. If you don’t value family, that’s fine. Anyways, the point is that the burden of raising the child early on is going to be put on the mother 99% of the time, even though both the man and woman are important in actually raising the child. That’s the discrimination she’s talking about, where society has normalized women having to stop their career progression and get only weeks of paid leave while men don’t have to do anything, rather than alternating or both taking leave together.

There is no gender pay gap. There is a skill and productivity gap. Meritocracy is how we become great. There is no participation trophy in real life.

So... individual choices are the reason for the gap... which is what educated/intelligent people have been saying for years but the men when they say it, they get called every name in the book for doing so.. When this lady does it they give her the Nobel... Means that prize from this point forward doesn't hold the same weight as it once did. What a crock of BS.

Perfect comparison is nursing and police pay and perks in at least Ontario. We lower nursing education (RPN), they get less pay. We do the same for police, their pay remains the same and continues to grow.

If you ever actually looked at research on the GWG, you would know that Goldin and almost every other researcher agrees with this. The problem is that the disparity in hours worked and different occupations can be BECAUSE discrimination in the first place. So instead of being snarky and calling her awarding a “joke” and her research “lies” maybe actually familiarize yourself with it, instead of spouting an argument that doesn’t debunk any of the actual research on the GWG.
