I joined a running club which runs every Wednesday night rain or shine. We all start together, run out along tracks for 25 minutes then run 25 minutes back so we all start and finish together. Then we go to a local pub for a drink and meal. It is very inclusive with ages from 20s to 70s and just as many women as men. This makes running fun and social.

Love this !! I actually never "got into" the runner culture....I find them uncomefortable and restrictive..I love soft soled light shoes that bend and allow my feet to move and flex, I feel I have more mobility and agility. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The talk is about adding purpose to your activities like running as a form of prayer in his story.

Interesting conversation body shaming and fitness shaming can be cruel but at the same time shame and the desire for redemption can be the greatest motivator of all

2 years ago I purchased an apple watch. Religiously since then , I closed all my rings . Exercising/calories consumed, amount of work out and standing. Being retired from teaching school, I teach only tennis and I play some with my students, against the wall ,soccer at the wall, stationary bike, rowing, ex with bends , walking ,moving non stop. I also do IF . I am getting better and better .Thank God for getting out of teaching school bc I can stay active a lot more. Staying active and outside is the best thing , I can ask for. Even in winter time at 40-45 degrees , I am outside. I don't get sick , feel so much better and don't have to deal with discipline issues like before( discipline is the key to achieve everything). Would not go to bed until I don't close all my rings on my watch. I also stretch and still do some martial arts moves. Finally after so many surgeries /both knees ACL and meniscus /left knee cartilage taken out and got 15 PRP s and 8 stem cells in the left knee( probably I am one of the v few individuals in the world that rebuilt 85-90% cartilage from zero !!!) and 8 PRP s and 3 stem cells in the right knee..left hip replacement..after a bad sartorius muscle cramp that I wasn't patient enough to let it heal...right elbow full recovery after one year and avoiding surgery ( hair tie ex around the finger knuckles , deep tissue corrective massage to place back the nerve in the groove..etc) I can start playing and running again . Doing lots of exercising ,I see an improvement of muscle mass and tone . Discipline and an apple watch is the solution !!!!I take a power nap during the day /22 min and that keeps me going , bc I can t sleep longer than 6 hours. My batteries get recharge v quickly so regardless I am tired /after the power nap , I can go teach again 100% energy. IF 16/8 or even longer...teaching 8 hours in the sun and ate after 21 hours...so be it. Perfectly fine. Turning a crucial age in 2 weeks ,where most people slow down.( born the year JFK was..gone..).I still want to do sprints...love to move and love to be in nature. Being healthy is a gift and I can't emphasize more, how happy I am do be able to run and play/teach tennis at full strength ....

Dear Rangan, your podcast is just wonderful. I wish there would be an equivalent of it in French, as many people in my country would benefit from such a program (and listen to English is not obvious for all). I talked about it to French GP friends and hope they will get inspired. I love the fact you prescribe dancing to your patients. I started a non profit called The What Dance Can Do you would surely like. Perhaps an episode with a scientist that has studied the impact of dancing on the brain would be great! Merci for your work!!

Great conversation. Thanks Dr. Lieberman. I believe barefoot running is probably ideal however I tried it and it ripped up my feet. I went gently at first but the blisters were unbearable. It seems to work great for loads of other people so definitely see if it will work for you. I used to hang out and work in Harvard Square but now live in Florida. Asphalt is too hot for barefoot running here. LOL

Run on grass. Best thing you can do. Also walking and earthing at the same time.

@@ovidragos5118 You’re obviously not familiar with Florida. The grass here is infested with fire ants that bite viciously. No grass running here but running on the beach could work.

Yeah it’s fine when the weather’s good but most the time in England the weather is crap especially in the north where I live . I wanted to go for a long walk the other day and it was p***** it down all day and it’s mid summer - then we get tons of windy cloudy miserable days were it’s hard to motivate myself to even leave the house - the weathers so unpredictable in the uk . Then there’s winter - freezing , raining, windy , Ice, cloudy , dark by 4pm - it’s so depressing . And then when you eventually get a good day but because you’ve been so depressed having been stuck inside because of the bad weather you find it hard to motivate yourself to go outside to exercise anyways . Then if you live in the city when you go for a run your breathing in all the crap air full of pollutants so your probably doing yourself more harm than good . I hate the UK- I mean it wouldn’t be a bad place if the weather was better and the days were longer in winter . That’s why a lot of people move abroad from here .

yeah i realize it's tough even though i've never lived there. But i was born and still live now at midlife, in seattle which has very similar weather, albeit maybe slightly milder, but absolutely gray skies constantly. It's quite difficult now that i work at home, far less motivation seemingly, to go out for exercise or even go out for most reasons, due to a city with ironically very few big green zones, ie parks. Ppl have to do whatever it takes to make sure they exercise, even if indoors when necessary. But tricking the mind to go outside to exercise even in cold weather, is very wise. We must trick our minds, by whatever means.

@@18_rabbit Thanks for the reply . Well at least you live in the US where you have the option to move or at least go on vacation to the southern states or even places like the Bahamas or South America where the weather is beautiful - in the uk even if you live far south it’s still bad especially in winter . I wished I lived in America but it’s really hard to get a green card to live there - well at least in my situation and background . I could move to the Mediterranean and it’s lovely there but America is where it’s all happening - your very lucky to live there . Personally I think overall when you weigh the pros and cons of living in different countries America tops the list provided your not living on the streets in some slum area and have some kind of income even welfare - you still have a better standard of living than most in the world . Anyways for your input .
