Note: I will be getting this grain tested to determine the protein levels. Be sure to check out the blog for lots of info on malting. brewingbeerthehardway.wordpre...
You are the man! I think it's awesome what you are doing. None of this pre malted ready made or extract crap. Grow it yourself! Malt it yourself. Brew it yourself!
I watched some of your videos over winter and grew a patch of barley this year. Inspiration! Just harvested some that seemed ready -- heavy rain pushed some stalks to ground so I had to do a bit early perhaps -- we will see. Thanks again and thanks for great videos
I can hear little feet scurrying around you in the barley patch...hehe Which hop varieties do you have growing? "One beer per square foot"...I think that would be a good title for a homebrew/gardening book. Love your videos man!
segarza No doubt, they're around, just not interested in the barley this year. I have Fuggles, Brewer's Gold and Cascade. They're in pots and are not happy this year- just too hot. Cheers!
Awesome video. Looks like a really good yield this year. Already have the beers planned? Have you tried smoking your own malt yet? That could be a cool video. Looking forward to the Gambrinus tour video. Cheers man!
Rock on Beer Blog Great suggestion, I had an old video on smoking malt but some judges hated the beer I made from it, what the hell do they know eh? About time for a redo, smoked malt - now on the list, I've got some old cherry wood ready to go. Cheers!
What barley variety is that? Sorry if you've already said somewhere. I really appreciate the square footage to yield weight/glass of beer. I spoke with a fella who said there's roughly 30 seeds yields down from one seed planted.
Inspired by your videos, I planted Conlon and Robust barley over 400 sq. feet. After some issues with wild turkeys, I seem to have a number of good stalks coming up. However, only 2-6 seeds per stalk! Any tips for increasing yield? We only got 1.5 pounds...
+Jerry Franck That's too bad, it sounds like there is a problem that's affecting the whole crop which could be anything that is causing stress like too much heat, too much shade, lack of water, or a soil problem. Also make sure you plant early enough or try planting in the fall. I use a lot of compost made with seaweed, horse manure, straw and leaves and I try to keep my soil covered at all times with either a mulch or a cover crop. Just don't plant rye where you plan to plant barley. Hope this helps. Francois
So the drill tool (Sheetrock mud mixer) with the chains are used to seperate the barley from the stalk? Is that correct? Then you just use a fan to blow the stalks away and collect the grain like that?
Ryan, flaked barley is unmalted barley that has been cooked, flattened and dried. If you want to add raw barley to a mash you can skip the drying step and mill it, then boil it, let it cool then add it to your mash or boil it and use it to raise the temperature of your mash. If you wanted to dry it I guess after you cook it you could mill it and then dehydrate it somehow, sounds messy.
@@lidobeachtowersmanagement9841 yeah. Based off of his math of a beer per square foot. Area of a circle is pi x r x r. R is half the diameter. There are 12 ounces in a beer and 128 ounces in a gallon, so you are looking at about 3 gallons for your 6 foot growbed.
