Our talented demonstrator Roisin has made some knots to celebrate the harvest!
Harvest knots were made using strands of straw which were plaited and looped over. Simpler knots used 2 or 3 strands of straw but more complex and decorative ones could be made using more strands. The ends were tied off using string, thread or coloured ribbons.
These knots were made during the harvest work and were often given to sweethearts as the simple double loop made a heart shape. In this context, harvest knots were also known as lovers' knots.
