Brilliant! Thanks for showing the granny way as well. Sometimes it helps to see what your doing - even if it's wrong - to see what you need to do right.
If the tails come out perpendicular to the "ins", it's a granny knot; ideal for parcels but not for joining ropes. If tails come out parallel the "ins", it's a reef knot aka square knot and probably other names too.
Great clear video, thank you. In the UK we call that a Reef Knot and the phrase is one we all grew up with (although I'm not really speaking for the entire population of the UK!!) 😊.
I suppose it could depend on your age to some extent or if you remember it from Brownies/Guides. I didn't go to either but am in my 70s and was taught the reef knot by my mum. It's generally my standard permanent knot for many things.
@@jackyf3505age wise I'm just behind you - 70 in March, and I too was taught this knot in my family - probably from my father. I can't 'do' the knot, even now, without saying in my head 'right over left, left over right'.
@@coastaljane137 I learned it only about a year ago (I'm 57) from this very video and since I said that phrase even because I'm used to doing the opposite, I don't know why 😅
Thanks so much. I’m taking up crocheting again in my 70s, having not crocheted this century 😂😂😂. Your videos are helping me recover knowledge and teaching me new tricks, like this one. Thanks, again. ❤
Hi friends, hope you enjoy the video. A quick note on this knot- PLEASE use your own discretion with this knot. Some viewers have commented that it comes undone with slippery yarn so I would recommend that you test it with your yarn before committing to it fully. Better to be safe than sorry 💕 If it’s slippery/soft , then leave a tail that can be weaved in or use the fisherman’s knot that I share at the beginning of the video 👍🏻
I don't use knots like this. It's not worth the risk of having my project fall apart. I leave 12 inch tails and weave in 9 inches. I love making lacy shrugs. For garments, I only change yarn at the end of the row so that I can weave the ends into the side seams. That way, I never have a weak spot in the middle of my sweater.
@@PlayHookywithMeCould you make a video on how to *hide* and *secure* tails when making something with loose, open stitches?🙏🏻 I want to make a lacy shawl, but I’m so afraid, because there’s no place to hide the tails. Not only will they be horribly visible, but I’m worried they’ll just fall right out of the loose holes.
@@Vmurph that’s a great idea. It will be a while before I can do a video about it so I would recommend you watch this video. This is very close to how I would approach lace myself: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dnsD96OPFa0.html You want to work your tail in a few different directions and then tie a little knot like she shows in the video and then weave in your tail once more before cutting. You might also consider carrying your tails and working over them to help secure them. The areas may be slightly thicker in those areas but I’m sure not to where anyone else would notice. Here is a video that shows some examples that might help you with your lace shawl. Weaving Ends Simplified Plus COOL HACK! 🤩🧶 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VElsx623OcM.html Hope that helps 💕
Thank you so much for this video. No one ever taught me the fisherman's knot that you show in the beginning, or the square knot--at least not this specifically. What a difference this makes!
Glad it was helpful! Please make sure when you do the square knot that it doesn’t come out if you pull on it or dig your fingernail into it . That’s the best test. Many have mentioned it comes out for them with soft yarn. The fisherman’s knot, however, has never come out for me no matter what yarn I use or how close I cut at the knot 👍🏻💕
finally! a knot that actually works!!! every other knot I've tried that people claim to be strong no matter how much I pull always came undone. But this knot, no matter how hard I pulled it didn't budge at all. thank you!!!
Thank you so much. Like everyone else who has watched this video, I'm so grateful for the way you explained everything. I kept getting confused when I tried to remember how to make a knot, but your little phrase is something I will not forget or get confused with.
I always remember this as reef knot from when I was a girl guide. We did it 'left over right and under, right over left and under'. Also produces perfect bows every time.
Thank you so much. I watched at least 4 other tutorials of join methods and they were all coming undone to easily. This was by far the most clear video!
I have been crocheting for over 50 years and I am loving your channel. I have learnt so much. This knot is magical. I love it. Thanks so much for all your tuition. I look forward to what I can learn next from you.
I love everything about this video - Short, and to the point - Clear instructions on both knots - Gives explanations as to why And as a bonus, the comment section is full of tips for other types of yarn where other knots may need to be used Thank you for this amazing video!
I do like this knot much better than the fisherman’s knot. The end result turns out softer for me, so the knot doesn’t mess with the texture of the piece as much. Thank you!
Thanks a lot for this! It's a long time since I use your advice to memorize the rule "right over left, left over right" and my knots are always perfect 👍🏽 thanks to you
Awesome! Please double check that it works well with your yarn … some viewers have said it pulls out with soft yarn. If that’s the case , use the fisherman’s knot. You’ll be good to go with that one ❤️
I always wondered why I couldn't use square knots. I've never had one pull out on me, but I am an old sailor. I make true square knots. You have saved me. I have got two bushels of little balls of yarn to make into scrappy balls this weekend. (I am finally watching "Barbenheimer").
Awesome! 💕 please double check that is stays out if you cut the ends off. It can still come out if it’s a soft yarn, I’m told . 😔 But it sounds like you aren’t having any issues so that’s great .
Thanks so much for this tutorial. I am making some repairs that involve tying short pieces of yarn together and this works better than the other magic knot . I learned to say right over left and under then left over right and under many years ago.
Thank you sooooo much for doing this video. The knot I was doing was so much more bulkier than this one. I don’t think the one I was doing was certainly not the square knot and I’m not sure it was even the granny knot. It wouldn’t come apart but it was a much bigger knot, that’s for sure. What a difference doing the square knot correctly verses incorrectly makes especially when working with thicker yarns. The square knot I did just a few moments ago is almost invisible! So once again I thank you for the correct way to make the square knot. This is a game changer for me. 😁👍😁
Appreciate it, thank you ! Please just make sure you can’t pick at it and open it up. Many viewers have said they have issues with slippery yarn so I don’t want to steer you wrong! I’ve had no issues with my yarn but I can see where it could come undone if the yarn is soft. ❤️
This is a 1000x easier than remembering the magic knot, and right over left/left over right bit makes it stick. Thank you! This is game changing, yet so simple
Thank you ❤. Worth testing this with your particular yarn as some will stretch when pulling the knot tight and others will slip or break. I did have to adjust the position of the knot but it’s way better than weaving in ends!
That's a great idea! Yes, I’m seeing now that it does greatly depend on the yarn used. Still much better than the granny but not as reliable as the fisherman’s knot. For me anyway! I know some have mentioned issues with the fk but I never have no matter the yarn . Thanks again for the tip! 👏🏻💕
Yes I learned it as the reef knot in Girl Guides as a child . However I learned it as left over right and under and then right over left and under. So doesn't need to be flat or get mixed up if you say the little verse to yourself and always test it in case you were distracted. Starting with the left also helped as I am a lefty. Works every time. It was a great help when I had a fiber farm and used baler twine for everything and this knot never fails . Great to learn it so young . But frankly I never thought of using it for my work with yarn . So thank you for sharing . My (antique/ vintage) circular sock machine will appreciate this renewed find ! Thanks again .
You are so right about the square knot and the granny knot! I had to try the knots myself and the square knot ( or reef knot as it is known in the UK) could not be pulled undone whereas the granny knot failed ! Thank you
Very clear video, thanks. What I learned for the Square knot was "Right over left and under, left over right and over". That will bring the 2 lines going out in the right orientation.
Just make sure that the yarn can not be picked apart if you cut close to the knot. This one won’t come out if there are tails on either side but it will come undone with softer yarn if you cut too close to the knot. 😕 I haven’t had issues with cotton yarn but I discovered that I could press my nail into the knot with wool yarn and it came undone . If it’s a soft yarn leave a bit if a tail on either side and work your stitches around it (no weaving necessary ) ❤️
I just want to say that this is how they taught us to tie our shoe laces too in military training so they don't come undone. You can do it right over left, left over right OR left over right, right over left. I've never had a loose shoe lace for over 20 years!
This will help me a lot. I have been using the russian join for years. It's great for cotton and acrylic yarns, but not good for crochet threads. I was just tying a knot for my threads and hoping for the best. I'll start using this method, Roz. Great video!!!!💖
Used this technique the first time today and it works just great. Thank you very much for this tutorial. You have no idea how much time you've saved me (from doing the weaving in tails or weaving tails along). Have a nice day.
I’m so glad 😀please look at the note on the top of the comments or in the description box regarding soft yarn. Check and double check that it won’t come out if you push your nail into the knot. If it comes out- the magic knot is your best bet ❤️
Such a wonderful video! Wish i could like it a 100 times. Had always struggled to add fresh strand of thread while stitching when the thread ended. This R ovr L / L over R is indeed a charm.
Thanks never realized that a knot could be used and now that you showed the correct way to make this knot I feel like this is my lesson for the day and it’s great to learn something new every day appreciate you tutorials they’re very informative and helpful for me❤❤❤
I just used it to join two ends of lion brand cotton together and it held tied, even cut close. I’ve crocheted a few stitches past and it’s totally invisible! No problems with this cotton yarn. I did tug on it pretty hard before trimming, maybe that’s why it’s holding so well.
Please just make sure it stays put if you decide to cut close to the knot. Many have mentioned it comes out with soft yarn. It will be fine if you keep the tails and just work over them as you go. No need for weaving in . ❤️
@Play Hooky With Me • Roz: You have explained and demonstrated the square knot and its wannabees better than the most ardent survivalist! And, you've done it in record time. Thanks so much for a great video! You Rock! 👍
Well I’ve known that all these years. I use it for tying clothes, aprons, scarves. Never considered it for joining yarn. Learn something new everyday. Thanks.
Thank you!!!!!! This is the first explanation I actually got, very good directions. I think this makes a smaller knot than the one where you tie the ends to each other. I've been using that method for years because just couldn't get this one right. Haha Thanx again. Very helpful.💜
Turns out I've been doing the Granny Knot all this time! I can make it stay securely, but most often it takes many tries, and my fingers hurt from pulling so hard on the yarn to make it tight. I just tried this on my planned pooling project, which requires precision in exactly where I tie the knot so that the pattern continues correctly. I got a beautiful, tiny (invisible once worked in!) knot that isn't coming apart no matter how much I yank it. First try! Thank you so much! My problem is now solved!
Thank you for this demo! I now trust my square knots enough to use them for color changes in my 1-row-a-day blanket 😊 It's day 4, and those tails were already getting to me haha
No, I don't show how to do it. Make a knot and try getting it to come out like you normally would. Don't just pull on the ends, press your finger into the middle of the knot and try to see if it will come undone.@@HopeUnquenchable
Thank you so much for sharing ! I've been knitting for many moons and always joined the yarn at the beginning of the row , not anymore 😊 you made it look so easy and I have achieved something new today ❤ ..... i was a Beaver Scout Leader and a Assistant Cub Leader years ago a d would always practice tying knots I didn't put 2 and 2 together and use it to join yarn 🤔😆😁🤪 !! Thanks again !
Wonderful! Please just be sure that the knot doesn’t come out if you like to cut close to the knot. I’ve had many people mention they still have it come out with soft yarn . Dig your nail into the center to test it . I’d hate to contribute to your ends coming apart! I’m bummed about that so a fisherman’s knot is idea if you have issues with the square knot. I still use the square knot a lot!!! It has so many uses as long as I double check 👍🏻💕💕
Thank you, what clear explanation! This knot will work and will be secure with "sticky" yarns like wool, but alas, won't hold mercerized cotton as I just tried this three times with that and they all came apart (with quite a bit of tugging, to be fair). I do think knots like this have their place, but I have yet to find a truly small, secure knot that is reasonably easy to tie and can be used with the slickest of yarns. But thank you, this knot certainly has its uses.
Yes - unfortunately that seems to be the case for the more slippery yarns. I’ll continue the hunt for small knots but ugh I’m thinking the fisherman’s knot is ultimately the most reliable so far ❤️
@@PlayHookywithMe If you ever discover a “tiny knot” solution that works on slippery yarn, please put those words in your title? I work with bamboo yarn a lot, because it feels so luxurious, but it’s a pain in the butt for knotting. If I ever see those words in one of your titles, I will jump on that video so fast! 😂
Right over Left and under, Left over Right and under. That is the order we were taught as Girl Scouts for a square knot. I still recite it whenever I tie one, and I have been tying them for nearly 40 years now.
its 4 am and i just discovered magic is real im screaming hows that possible it makes crocheting with multiple colors SO much easier i just cant believe this
I wish 10 months ago when I started crocheting I would have seen this video. It’s so easy to make a square knot yet I’ve been somewhat perplexed at the many ways people here on RU-vid try to teach it… it becomes a complicated thing… and it’s not! Pun definitely intended here! Thanks for the explanation, I think it’s the only one I learned when taking a sailing course eons ago! 😂
Hi Roz, Thank you so much for sharing this secret knot 🪢 😉 I’m definitely trying this out the next time I need to knot my yarn together. I’ve definitely imprinting this on my brain…Right over Left and Left over Right! Kitty is so cute keeping the yarn 🧶 under close supervision 😊 Take care and stay safe and well. God’s blessings 🙏🏽💗🧶
