It's sad to see that Natsume is making the same mistake so many companies make when they create an open-world game. They make the world huge, empty, and without depth. I don't care how big the map is if there's barely any time to explore it and barely anything to explore. I think they could have cut the map in half, given more textures to the environment, and focused on giving us interesting characters and farming mechanics. They've been doing this multi-town large world concept for a while now and in my opinion, it makes their games feel disjointed.

love the review! honestly for me the game lacks a lot of customization, the world seems too “empty”, the days are short, the game looks bland to me tbh. i just wish they added more ✨ personality ✨ it just seems like a rough draft more then a finished product

hm was so good in the wii era, so many things to do, relationships changed often and had loads of dialogue. plenty of crop variety and animals too. and the performance wasn't bad, they were polished games. I just wish for once we'd get a hm or any farming game that was just finished and polished and expanded on what they've done already.

Great review!! I’ve always loved harvest moon games but it is kinda disappointing the lack of options for customizing the characters. It’s cool to have a open world in harvest moon but the world doesn’t look as eye catching. Thank you for the honesty!

I like what they are doing with the variants of crops, and all the different animals. I might actually get this one maybe on a sale

Natsume is slowly but surely getting closer to actually developing a good Harvest Moon game.

I don't mind shorter days if there is an actual drive to playing through the second year. Most of the newer sims you can easily knock out most if not all the main content and have tools maxed etc by the end of the first year. Part of that I believe is the trend towards longer days, rather than have a dynamic to-do list, you complete everything every day. An efficient player can end up leagues ahead of someone who isn't organized about their days.

So ur saying whoever is lead designer on the sky needs a raise....everyone else needs a pay cut😂

It looks like every second of play a minute passes in the game's clock. So 24 minutes of play would be 24 hours. If your character sleeps, then a day might be 12 to 16 minutes. That would take longer than 16 minutes if the time pauses for menus, etc.

I said goodbye to the harvest moon series a long time ago and played SoS instead. This is the first HM I’m playing again and I need to say : i like it. Ja, there have been better games before but it’s cute and I like the storyline a lot. There’s much to do and the male marriage candidates are cute, which is rare. 😊

I actually saw cherubae on twitter correct someone about the day length when they complained about the day being around 8 minutes long, they also said the day is around 15 or so, so knew pretty early on that whoever said that was mistaken

The open world concept in any game is just one nail in the coffin for me. Also, I believe Natsume has given subpar quality farming sims since it started making them on their own.

The fishing remains me of Dark Cloud 2 (Chronicles); as the fishing there is pretty much the same. You pull your line the opposite of which way the fish it swimming in

some times "open world" turns into... "vast as the ocean, deep as a small puddle." so yeah. like starfields worlds. how there is nothing out there on most planets... just the same assets as the last 4. and the same animals.

This is the first time since the actual company switched to Story of Seasons that they made a game that doesn’t look awful.

It looks a little bit like everdream valley with a focus on different animals and the massive open world,i do love an open world but it does look slightly bare!

Harvest Moon keeps missing opportunities. With so many great farming/cozy sim games out there really trying their all, there's no excuse for the father of farming games to continuously fall short.

This is the first Harvest Moon I have purchsed since A Wonderful Life back on Gamecube. The last...lots of Harvest Moon games have not looked great or been exclusively handheld. Really looking forward to my copy arriving. Thanks for the review!

I love this game, about as much as BOTW. Like I'm half way through BOTW and I just wanted to check this one out because the SNES version was one of my favorite games growing up. Now I just want to play this for a while. Honestly, it borrowed a lot from BOTW so think of Zelda but much more relaxing. It's a great cozy game. ❤️

Too many games! I’m still obsessed with Fae Farm lol. Definitely interested in this though.

Playing through this game now and I'm noticing that the people criticizing this game in the comments fall under three categories -70% criticizing it for their own poor choices in game/skill issues (not switching game time to "Relaxed" mode to make the days longer, not using bait when fishing, and not riding horses to travel the open world to make the process faster) -25% Fair criticism like the the open world being barebones and more minor things like character personalities and little customization -5% complaining about coffee trees as if that's some major issue or something So far it's easily better than the most recent SoS entries, mostly because it's strengths are with the core gameplay and not with the side stuff like characters.

Actually it is a refresher in my opinion to have a game that does not have a lot of customization. Cyber punk is like that and all I want to do is jump right in and play.

thanks for the review! I just have one question. Do the characters have some personality ? I played a Story of Season's game recently and was super disapointed. The characters didnt feel alive at all. They were saying the same things over and over. And that's something i find important to me.

I really like the look of the animals, I was sad to see a wonderful life getting rid of the style of many my favorites like the sheep….i liked how different it was back then.

I wish devs would stop making open world games if they're not gonna do much with the open world aspect.

I want to like this game i really do... but it seems like they put in half the effort and then put the pricetag at full effort costs. You cant do both, i think im going to pass on this game unless it has a massive sale in the future

The visuals and the performance are as expected with how much extra stuff there is in this game. We also need to remember there's only so much you can put in without it bugging like hell and pokemon scarlet is a great example of this. They tried to add lots of detail as well as having a big open world game and it's caused major glitches and lags so Natsume probably saw the issues with Pokemon and chose not to go into major detail because they new it would effect the game play over all.

I pre-ordered this game and game stop called me and Said something about a delay and they said I will get a call and I haven't got a call yet so I am now glad that I didn't get a call because I am kinda hesitant about getting the game 😕.

Does anyone know if they've done any patches or updates to amke it smoother and fill the open world up some more? I planned on buying my copy today (BTW walmart has it for $29.99 USD now, and they price match to the online price too). Since it's been a year, I was hoping there would be more added other than costume and character DLCs...

Facts: Skyrim is 12 years old. Took about half a decade to develop with a full team. Stardew Valley is 7 years old. Took about half a decade to develop by one man.

Sad so many people still consider Nasume's Harvest Moon the same as the Marvelous's Harvest Moon. When people talk about Nasume's Harvest Moon they bring up Marvelous's creation like it's the same thing. That's like saying Harmony Gold created Robotech.

I've been pretty disappointed in Harvest Moon games since the break up. This game does show plenty of improvement but it's far from Story of Seasons that's for sure. Since they are competitors, you'd think Natsume would try really hard to make it a game worth comparing. But the character creation sucks, the emptiness of the vast lands suck... the game play aside, I feel like I will feel underwhelmed playing this game. I need immersion, I need creativity otherwise it feels very lacklustered. No way do I believe they will add more to the World to make it feel less empty so I'm yet again disappointed in this Harvest Moon game. Will I buy it? Probably... will I love it? I doubt it. Is Story of Seasons still the superior franchise? Absolutely.

Look sorry most people will say i'm old as fuck but Back to Nature was the GOAT i still compare a lot of games to it and most are lacking even when i compare Stardew Valley its lacking in comparison to Back to Nature it will always have a special place in my heart

Totally agree just purchased this and have to agree even with the add ons it's basic ! Was expecting way more from this.

I haven’t played a farming sim since GC Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life and it looks like I’ll be waiting a bit longer.

The saddest part for me is the lack of personal touches and thoughts put into character developments. They either all look similar in this annoyingly flawless anime style, or outright weird... When you have a baby, no villages sent congratulations messages to you. Your wife gets pregnant but her body stays the same the entire time. Festivals mechanics are just sad compared to the original HM. Everyone stands in a corner so far apart. Yes indeed, the words "disjointed," "unfinished" have been used here in the comments section. And I agree with them!

Bought this game after watching this review. I quite like it, despite the rather bland cast (even light of hope characters had way more personality on them) and unending busy work (cant even talk to people without getting a request shoved down my throat ffs). There really is something that always makes you wanna do more in this game but until when, only time can tell. Still prefer SoS over HM any day but it's nice that Natsume's getting their shit together

Story of seasons: Three towns is still the best game in my opinion

I agree with the smaller map with many things on it than a huge map with almost nothing to do in it.

This map is huge!! It's hard to find towns :/ there's just too much! Is it really a farming game anymore? The plots of land are scattered so far from each other you're more invested trying to explore than farm anymore it's a shame the last good game was one world

Harvest Moon, dont need a empty open World... the Mines looking empty and Borring too. They use 1 Face Typ, for EVERY NPC. Just the Eyes and hair, are different. For Real, the game is just trash, like the One World. Just looks a bit better.

they can't even be bothered to make a proper coffee plant... the beans just hanging on regular tree

It's just sad that it's 2023 and this is the best we can get. The map is big, but it feels soo empty and fake. There is zero depth to the characters (as usual). The customization options are sad.

I just wish that this game's price was cheaper at least not higher than $30, it's a Harvest Moon game though one of the known franchise of a big farming cozy simulator game since then. but it's not the quality I'd expected from a $50 worth of a game with that kind of animated graphics, it looks bland even the SoS a wonderful life environment looks alive and colorful and well detailed like the grass on the ground, trees, the biomes, water on the lake, this one looks so plain and flat, characters was not looking at you tilting they're head when you pass by them like the previous harvest moon game, they just stood there like a cardboard poster just being moved by a wind, there's no depth in the characters design like giving them more personality and different uniqueness to each other, this game just look and feels just like a beta game rather than a full finished product game. Idk There's something pushing me to get this game since it have a Harvest Moon name on it and I'm a fan since the harvest moon hero of leaf valley on the PSP before... If only the developers really listens and cares to the fans this game would probably more promising. But again! the price what holds me back to get this since I saw what the game looks like on that price, it might be a pass? Idk... If the price drops I might get this though, because it looks decent enough to caught my attention. ❤

Short days, WAY too big of a map with so little in it and just up and moving your fucking farm AND NOT HAVING REAL SEASONS? What more do I want? A real Harvest Moon game, that's what I want. I'm sure it would be OK at best if it wasn't trying to be the series that it's not. I'd consider buying it and keeping it if they would just rebrand or quit their shit. Instead I'll buy it just to make them give me a refund. If they can't make an actual Harvest Moon game, then they get bad reviews and forced refunds. They took the name but they can't live up to it.

This game is like the 'Nick for Kids' version of Harvest Moon. It's so basic and...bland. That they charge 50 bucks for this when games like Stardew and even the 'Wonderful Life' remake exist is kinda insulting.

❤😢🧑🏽‍🦳🎮 hello Patrick, the game length is toooooo short? You can’t mine in the time you have to get to floor 11 to activate the floor levels so you don’t have to keep repeating the 1st floor? Then while you’ll looking for the ladder to go to the next floor you’re boom bartend with rocks pounding you every time you’re hitting rocks? It needs to be put to a stop!!!!!??? Please for goodness sakes just let us players mine for the or we need & activate the floor level elevators at floor 5! N you don’t have a mixture of ores why you gotta wait till you get to level 11,15,20, or 22 befor you find silver cooper or bronze or the green ores or the blue ores or even gold ores? The timing for mining is too short, the time you wake up n get the mine is tooooooooooooo short your character has fallen to sleep before you even get to the 2nd floor? The othe thing you need to change is since doc is the carpenter n has the mining recourses why not let him sell us what e need to repair our barn? Instead of being knocked out in the mine trying to fine silver bronze viper irone ore or any other type of ore we may need? To repair or upgrade our tools? It needs fixing? Please 🙏🏼? Or fix the game where we have the house barn and farming plots outside the town!!??? Please Other wise peoples like me will never get outside that unforgiving town we started in. Please fix the day time that when it starts fix it so that when we go to the mines we have time to find the ores we’re looking for? Fix the game so that if we have to start a new life give us the house outside the town n fix it so that we can get what we need from doc since he has all of the carpentry and the ore’s resources to make repairs upgrades then fix it so that we can buy the ores from dock until we can get to a level where we can mine a longer time and not be hit with rocks!?
