The leaves are used in South America as a tea because of its anti-inflammatory properties

The leaves make a delicious tea. This video is the second one you have posted where you said the leaves are of no use. I don't understand your thinking on the leaves. Put the leaves, 3 - 4 cut to fit the pot. Add a quart of water. Bring to boil, cover and remove from heat. Let steep at 10 minutes. I pour it through a strainer into a quart jar. Add water if you find it strong to your taste. Or not. I love it with a mild honey. A delicious, healthy and relaxing tea. Also good cold. I like the leaves more than the stalks.

The first time I pruned back (actually just cutting out the dried stuff) it occurred to me that regular teas are made from dried leaves....... so I held onto the stuff I had not already trashed and made a tea!!! I was extremely surprised that it did not even need sugar!!!!!!! Mild, but flavorful!

Hi Luke. I have a huge lemon grass plant that I’ve been growing for a couple of years. I live in Houston, Texas. We had a hard freeze for two days. The lemon grass died back but came back with the fury as soon as it warmed back up. I like to use the leaves for tea. I steep with with some fresh mint and ginger. You should try lemon grass tea the next time you grow it. 😃

I already bought some lemongrass seeds among a bunch of other seeds. They should be here on Monday. I have been excited to try out growing lemon grass and chamomile for the first time. I love lemon grass in dandelion tea and I harvest the dandelions in my yard for tea in the spring. I would be beyond thrilled to get more into mixing my own herbal tea blends with home grown goodies.

Agree with other comments about the leaves as tea. Also as a mulch it is high in nitrogen. I'm just confused about why you left so much bulb in the ground instead of chopping the tops at 4-6 inches above the soil, and digging it up... You only got the top half of the bulbs, and the really good bottom half will die over the winter in the ground.

My husband is half Thai and we LOVE lemongrass soup, especially with shrimp and scallops! Will check out your lemongrass soup video next 😁. Started some from stalks last year but this will be the first year starting from seed. How long for germination?
@terihampton737
@terihampton737 Год назад
It's a long germination... Don't give up. I didn't think mine took, and was about to plant something else, when it finally sprouted. It was in the area of 18-22 days Also the germination rate was lower than other crops, so overseed if you want. I didn't have as many at first, but they were bigger and stronger than the commercial plants, so I separated later and had more than I dreamed of.

Ok then. Still seems a waste to throw all of it in the compost. I personally would have been making tea with the leaves practically every day until they just aren't worth it, then throw the rest in the compost. Just steep the leaves in hot water.

Those stalks are too thin to really use (fresh) in cooking. The good part is the softer inner stem but there is next to none on those stalks. I had the same problem with mine, lots of thin stalks rather than a few large ones that I wanted. The root mass was also near impossible to break up end of season so I stopped growing it. The couple of times I make a fresh lemongrass curry I just buy one from the Asian grocer.
