Harvesting My First Olives in Italy - A Beginner's Experience!

My Little Italian Homestead: Abruzzo, Italy

This week I tackled my first olive harvest at my homestead in Abruzzo! It was a wonderfully satisfying experience and I'm so happy that we managed to make around 110L of extra virgin olive oil. Special thanks to Frantic Granchelli for letting me film in the olive pressing plant, it was fascinating to see the whole process from start to finish.

Ah really? I have to say it’s the best decision I’ve ever made! Where are you based at the moment? Are you thinking of Abruzzo or Italy in general?

@@MyLittleItalianHomestead I am in Texas. I have lived, visited, and worked in different places in the world and the USA. My family is two generations removed from Italy. I hear some places are going cheap because of vacancies or no one wants to keep a country house they inherited. Thinking about the Campania area.

@@frederickcampana5717 Yes property prices are very reasonable! I absolutely love the Campania region (I was born there) - I think it has the best cuisine in Italy and gorgeous coastline. I wish you luck in finding your perfect home!

Use a tractor with a shaker and umbrella harvester. You can do 12 acres of olives a day.

Very nice video. We arw going to Italy for the first time in Oct and Nov tgis year. We want to experience a real italy and unlike many we are not going to the big cities but the less traveled areas. Starting in the cilento coast, puglio, abruzzo, umbria and fly out to rome. What time did you harvest the olives? How are the roads from abruzzo to Umbria Thank you John
@MyLittleItalianHomestead
@MyLittleItalianHomestead 3 месяца назад
Hi John, thanks so much for the positive feedback! Sounds like you have a great itinerary there - you’ll get to see a variety of different landscapes but in a more authentic way. Last year we harvested in the second week of October which is quite early but it had been a very hot summer so they were ready. I think usually end of October/beginning of November is when the harvest takes place. The motorway from Umbria to Abruzzo is amazing. However, once you get into Abruzzo the roads are pretty potholed and terrible, I have to admit, and everywhere takes longer than you think because of the mountains in the way!

Wonderful! In Portugal the olive oil co-op gives you back the amount of oil you want for personal use and pays you for the oil they keep. Do you have a sense of what a typical 100 trees would produce in revenue if one decided to sell theirs wholesale?
@MyLittleItalianHomestead
@MyLittleItalianHomestead 9 месяцев назад
That’s such a great idea! I have contacted a local cooperative and I’m hoping they will have a similar scheme - I will keep you posted. I’m not sure of wholesale prices, I only know that locally people are selling for €11/12 per litre so could potentially make over a thousand euros.

You need to buy a 12 volt abbacchiatore , but not the one with portable battery it's way too expensive. A 60 amp battery will be fine .

My brother-in-law and I are going to start a olive oil orchard in California we want to know what is the best Olive for oil what species of olive? We're going to plant about a hundred olive trees we're trying to think of what two species would we want to do. We figure we are going to make it a family event picking olives and having a picnic. We aren't really into it to make money I'm going to keep my regular job. We want to make a good quality olive oil.

Hi! Thanks for watching my video 😊 I don’t know what kind of soil you have there but the top varieties here for making olive oil are Sessana, Leccino, Coratina, and Itrana. My olive oil comes out with quite a peppery flavour and very rich colour. I love the idea of getting all the family together to pick! This month I need to start pruning the trees so I’m hoping to film another video about that ☺️

@@michaellangdon7608 No here people either do it straight after the harvest or in March but the majority seem to do it in March, probably because they’re too worn out after the harvest like I was 😂

I do my pruning in the fall. But that's my other fruiting trees. I'm still learning about the olive tree. I would show you a picture of the land that we're going to be farming but I don't know how to do it on RU-vid.
