Harvesting Soybeans! l John Deere 4420 Combine l Harvest 2022 

That was the slowest I've ever seen a combine move. It could surely handle it a little faster. It was killing me. Lol 😆

This older machinery works just fine just because something new comes out doesn't mean you have to go and grab it because that's what everyone else is doing especially when the old equipment is doing just fine! Also good to see the next generation farmers and harvesters coming up!

That's a nice looking 4420. I spent many hours in a 1979 4400, which was very similar to the 4420. Your rotary deflector (screen in front of the fan) is not turning and is covered with soybean dirt. This will overheat your engine in a hurry...I thought I could see the temp gauge in one of the inside the cab shots, and it looked like it was running pretty high. I am very surprised you did not overheat. There are two latches on the door, one in front outside which holds it shut, and one on the bottom inside of the door. The bottom latch disengages the belt running the deflector so you can open the door without pulling the belt off. Check this latch and make sure the belt is in place and engaged. It should turn any time the engine is running. Like someone else said, I also believe your head is bolted up for small grain. The bolts take a 9/16 wrench and are removed from below the head. If your flex gauge (the thing with numbers from 1 to 4 and an orange indicating ball on the RH side of the head) is reading all the way to the top with the head off the ground, you are bolted up. I pushed a 213 head at between 3 and 4 mph in good beans, so I agree with others you are going a bit slow. Raise the reel and speed it up. You need to pull the beans across the cutter bar so that it will cut them. Running the combine full will help clean up your sample. There should be a switch up there to one side or other of the gauges in the cab that turns on the header height control. After you remove the bolts holding the cutter bar in the "up" position, turning the switch on will allow the combine to automatically control the header height. The 200 series wasn't the best head in the world, but it should be cutting much closer than it is. If can take an angle grinder with a wire brush to those flex plates to get the worst of the rust off, beans will feed in better. Also make sure all the fingers are in the auger. Time spent replacing worn sections and guards will really make a difference in how well those old heads cut. If there isn't already plastic on the skid plates, consider putting some on. It's not that big or expensive of a job, and it will make a night and day difference on how well the head goes along without pushing trash especially if the soil is damp. The 4400/4420 combine had some weak points, but over all they were a pretty decent combine.

Oh yeah, the guy with the Minne-Mo. Great looking combine. The yellow cabs look so much better than modern blobs.

I drive truck for a farmer. We haul ground corn, soy meal, pellets (soy hulls that are pelletized), DDG's (Distiller's Dried Grain from a ethanol plant) to five local dairies. I haul soy products out of CHS in Mankato MN every day. I see a lot of trucks from WI coming to get soy products. You guys must not have a lot of soybeans over east of the river. Always nice guys from Sconnie, donch ya know.

Spent all day overhauling the flex head on our 48 year old Gleaner. Came home to fall asleep watching you guys cut beans with nearly a similar vintage Deere.

First combine I ran was a 4400 with the same head. That was 1975 when I was 14.

He can increase his ground speed a bunch which will help the feeding into the machine

That Moline is a fine looking tractor.

In addition to ground speed/reel speed/ and making sure the head isn't locked rigid, I sure would throw some money into the cutter bar on that 213, I am not a huge fan of the 200 series heads, but for as slow as the ground travel is, it is sure not cutting clean from what I can see. With the cutter bar in good shape, and good poly under it, that 4420 should push that right along at a decent clip.

Thanks so much for showing the old combine at work. The first one when I was very young I think it was a massy with no cab. Grandad let me run it on the field for a few hundred feet that is all I can remember and that would be very early 50's

Nice JD 4420. I have a 4400, which is a very similar machine. Saul could certainly go a little faster around the field. But I guess he will when he get more used to harvesting beans. Good video.

I vaguely remember my grandfather using a 55 combine. It was gigantic! They were outside Sherry/Marshfield. That's about as far back as these old memories go.

If you're looking at it that close, you better be buying it! Nothing wrong with older equipment, if it's working! And the fan on the side isn't turning, and if you go into the beans the way they are leaning down, it'll go better! It may even be one way!

Hey guys, good job. Got me an old 7700 Deere with a 216 flex head for beans and small grains. Everyone who mentioned speeding up the reel and ground speed is correct. Let the reel pull those stalks in instead of pushing them over. That 213 is a flex head if I'm not mistaken. When you lifted it I didn't see the cutting bar drop down. Look to see if there are 4 bolts or so running down the center of the head from side to side. That makes the head ridged for doing small grains without having to run the head on the ground to keep the sickle bar from heating up and breaking. I like my old stuff and I'm sure that the old 4420 will sure do you right for a long time to come. Have fun and enjoy.

Many years ago I was trying to choose between a nearly new 4420 & a nearly new IH1440 for 200 acres/yr at the time. I chose😮 the 1440 & still use that same machine now - I have the last farm of beans I should finish today. My neighbors have gone through many combines - all JD - on about same acres but that 1440 still cuts faster & cleaner than what they got. They have 200K combines w/6 row heads & I now got a $15K (I keep it updated & nice) machine with 6 row head & we harvest about same bu/day/person. While they had to build bigger buildings to store their bigger combined, I still store mine in the same 40 yr old building. Only thing I wish mine had was better brakes & bigger grain tank but that’s ok, mine put $ in my bank unlike theirs.

Little advice on the beans just speed the reel up a bit get more ground speed to feed them on faster it will clean up the sample if you fill the machine up

Reel needs to be sped up and then go faster. The beans will go into the machine better and you'll get done sooner.

Tell him to raise the reel. The bats shouldn’t touch the crop, only the times. Run a little faster ground and reel speed. I’m not a fan of the green machines , but that’s one of the cleanest old combines I’ve seen in a while.

I run my real speed a little faster then my ground speed. We have a 6620.

Best to operate it at capacity. The best advice for adjusting cylinder I was given when I first learned was "clearance threshes and speed smashes".

I think you guys should invest in an older John Deere combine or pill type since you guys run shelled corn also and oats

That was sweet, nothing wrong with running older equipment so long as it is relaliable and you don't get in too big of hurry. With how high equipment is nowadays you have to make do with whatever you can afford.

I ran a 4420 many a day in soybeans and corn good old combine. You do need to put your head on float and speed the reel and ground speed up

It doesn’t look like the screens running to clean the rad off . There’s a over center thing that makes a belt tight. You have to get that working or you will over heat the engine. And you might want to speed your reals up.

Hi guys, I had a 4400 and then upgraded to a 4420. We cut with a 220 8 row 30 inch beans. Run it in 2nd gear with the hydro at about 1/2 Way going between 2.2 to 2.8 mph. The reel speed should p down run about 10% faster than your ground speed. I notice your running your reel way to low. Raise it 6-8 inches. I seen that you were bending the beans over before the sickle was cutting the stems. And that causes alot of loss.

Dad's john deere 45 had. a 12 ft head.4 rows of crop. First 95 had a 16 ft head 5 rows of crop. Second 95 had a 19 ft head 6 rows of crop. All were 30 inch rows. Your reel speed is slower then any of those combines.

I'm not a professional combine operator by no means but for better efficiency the combine needs to move fast enough for you to reach the combines efficiency and cleaner samples just a idea I thought saw was driving a bit slow

There is a guy in Gilbert Iowa that has a 443 advertised on Craigslist for 2500.00.

Raise your header real where you are just touching the beans and a little faster speed. Try to lower your header to about 1 inch off the ground. I have a 6600 jd they are very similar in the controls.

Even if the cutter bar is rigid for wheat it will cut lower than it is now. I couldn’t stand to run over that many beans. He was talking about the beans in the bin not being clean. That’s a pretty good looking field of beans to me. I’m wondering if he’s not running with the throttle wide open which would definitely affect the rpms of the cleaning fan speed. I think he’s got a pretty good machine he just needs a little guidance or an operators manual.

Pods,hole in lower shive that do have a hole shine that takes pods out ps you're doing fine.

Our 4400 ran a 16 ft. Head. They'll do a better job if you keep them busy. It's gentler on the beans to thresh against other beans if that makes sense. Easier to get them out of the pod without splitting or grinding them.

After watching other U tubers farming (How Farms Work, Millennial Farmer, Cole the Corn Star...) Looks like U r standing still but I'm sure if U could show 40 yrs before that combine was born U'd be out there with a hand scythe and a pitch fork so quite the step up!
