Wow you really did leave that as long as possible Peter. In fact for me that was a couple of days past the stage I like to eat them at, it looked very soft and very dark inside. I wonder if from listening to people enthuse over how sweet their figs are when they taste them if you might have been 'over' expecting. It most likely would have had more flavour and been a bit sweeter in hot weather however I don't consider figs excessively sweet
Thanks, Brett. Haha, yeah you might be right. Maybe I have an unrealistic expectation of how sweet they should be after watching all the fig reviews from the US. I did still enjoy it. It had a much better flavour and was nice and juicy, compared with the bone-dry and tough fruits I've had before from the supermarket.
@@PeterEntwistle haha yep supermarket figs are barely edible more often than not 🤪. I'd guess that's why so many people assume they don't like figs, they've never tasted a proper fresh one
Cheers, Conor! Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised with the flavour of it, even though it wasn't incredibly sweet, it still had some lovely berry flavours in it. Yeah, I'm hoping it will improve with age and also ripen a little earlier 🤞
Thanks Peter it was very kind of you to share your first tasting with us. Im sorry it wasn't quite as good as you'd hoped. I'm going to make a quick video for you in my garden here in Hertfordshire I think you might like
Congratulations on your first taste test of your homegrown fig 🥳🙌🏾 Unfortunately this summer/autumn hasn’t been the best weather wise..but you should hopefully get much better quality figs in years to come 🤩🌱
Thanks, Joe! I was so happy to have got to try one this year. I thought they were going to abort at one stage last month. Yeah, I think you are right they should hopefully improve as the tree matures 🤞
Congratulations, Peter. Your fig looked excellent. Great colour, inside and out. I’m surprised it wasn’t sweeter than you described. To be honest, the figs on my tree were sub-par this year. Just didn’t get the sun at the right time. I’m sure next year yours will be even better.
Thanks, Dom! Yeah, I think I was just expecting a bit more sweetness, but it still had a really nice fruity flavour; it was very pleasant much better than any I've purchased before. It was probably washed out a little bit with all the rain we had over the last few days. But I'm still very happy I got to try it 🙌
I've never tried a brown turkey. Nor a long neck variety fig of any kind. Your description reminds me of purple skin figs with yellowish flesh, my list favorite. Down here many figs are really almost as sweet as honey.
Congratulations! How lovely that you got one. I don't think mine are going to ripen up this year, my little French guy seems to always want to push figs out right in time for dormancy. I just hope they stay small so they can overwinter🤞
Thanks, Dani! I'm so glad it ripened up. I wasn't sure it was going to ripen at all a few weeks ago, so you never know hopefully yours still might 🤞 Oh yeah, I know what you mean, I've also seen several small figs that would be next years breba starting to grow, which means there will be less for next year 😱
Hey Peter I'm not very good at making videos but I have just made a short one showing as few of my plants and a short fig cutting into one of my Brunswick figs. Please take a look 👍🏻
Brown Turkey breba are not particularly sweet. I far prefer the main crop. Incidentally, I just harvested the last Brown Turkey from my tree this weekend. The eye had split tremendously, and I wanted to pull it before pests or pathogens spoiled the fruit.
Yeah, the season is almost over now. Definitely a good idea to pick it before it gets ruined by pests. I don't think I'll ever get to try the main crop on mine here lol 😂
