I too was collecting records and 45s but few years ago I had the same realization. It never ends and my lot of my spare money was disappearing and I was running out of space. So I gave it up.
It's from the 1988 documentary "Comic Book Confidential". Stan Lee, Will Eisner, Robert Crumb, Bill Griffith and several others are also interviewed and read one of their comics like this.
Good job mate. I met this guy at my job who apparently knew Pekar and Crumb. Showed me some letters and drawings they sent him. Needless to say I identify with Mr. Pekar. RIP
I can empathize. If I have extra money and say I’m out wandering around, browsing at flea markets, junk stores, etc. I’ll often buy records, books, toys I don’t need just to do it. Now, if I take the time to examine these purchases, I’m often pleasantly surprised at music or story or whatever it is I was unfamiliar with, but buying just to buy. That’s a habit I’d like to lose.
HP was the first one I ever read who put record collecting into words accurately when he said that you find yourself not necessarily WANTING a record, but NEEDING it...
I wish I knew what the background song is. Not being a jazz-collector it's nearly impossible to find that out! I tried Miles Davis - So What,, / Art Blakey - Moanin' / John Coltrane - Blue Train / Boots Randolph - Tuxedo Junction / Microscopic Septet - Baghdad Blues / Modern Jazz Quartet - Watergate Blues / John Zorn - A Shot In The Dark........ They all sound ok to me but WHAT IS IT... :o
