It's not like it even makes much sense from a cost perspective. The MRW-200H which can be had for like £20 has a rotating bezel, though all the parts are plastic.
CASIO never make a perfect watch. You can have solar powered but fixed bezels or you can have good sapphires crystals but written 10year battery on the dial or you can have the fish logo but no solar powered 🤦🏻♂️
I’ve been saying this for years… Casio needs to make a scaled down Duro. Let’s call it the Duro 2. 40 mm in diameter, 47 to 48 mm lug to lug and upgrade the the movement to a tough solar. I’d probably pay over $100 for that. And I think they’d sell like crazy.
*YES.* I don't really need solar as the battery lasts long enough, but it has to have an end of life indicator. It has to be thinner and the blue one has to have a darker shade of blue in the dial. That's what I'd like .
if casio put that movement and solar capability in the duro.... wow. as it stands i will stick by my trusty duro until i lose it, break it or casio does what i suggested.
I agree. let's make a petition for CASIO to manufacture the SUPER DURO, which will a microbrand of CASIO, like when SEAT company noticed that the SEAT LEON CUPRA car is selled like crazy, they launched the CUPRA as a seperata microbrand of SEAT... CASIO should take the duro to next level, with ceramic bezel, super titanium bracelet, 500m water resistant, original clasp with the sword fish logo, hydro mode (like SINN watches), sapphire crystal glass, day date, perpetual calender, solar powered quartz. If CASIO do so, they will sell SUPER DUROs like crazy.
@@hermeshein-yahav7247 LOL.. that would bring a $79 watch to over $500... i'd be happy with just a sapphire glass and bigger date display, which could be done inexpensively. duro is famous for it's price point s quality.
A long time ago a fixed bezel would not have bothered me as I would never use it. Now I use the bezel quite often for timing really important stuff like how long a tea bag has been stewing in a mug of hot water or how long an irritating person has used up my time on a conference call and added less than zero value to a project. I must say though the hand misalignment is way off for a Casio example in my experience. Usually these are nigh on bang on the markers, well from my experience anyway. Let's hope the alignment on your example is not a signal for a future trend. Keep up the great work Ben!
Yes, since I started wearing divers I've been surprised how often I use the bezel. It's actually handy, unlike tachymeter bezel. Also, even in my non-life-and-death situations I'm glad it's unidirectional.
@@vonkruel I must confess I do like the VHP from Longines that is on my list to consider as a set it and forget it watch that's really well finished but is more expensive as you say. There is GMT VHP version that has a clever phone flash function as well but that will add even more cost.
@@anthonystevens8683 Yes, I think that's a smart, simple way of programming it. I'm not sure whether I'd go for the GMT myself. I'm not much of a world traveler, but then again I don't go diving either. 😜 For now I'm spending too much on other things to consider it, but Longines VHP and Citizen "The Citizen" are both really tempting. Either one could be my "quartz grail".
I’m gonna stick with the duro. Mine is the blue dial and it just captivates me every time I check the time . The mtp 110 sure is good value but nowhere near as beautiful. Maybe make the euro solar and that would be the one watch to rule them all! A good review
Great show Ben! Fixed bezel?! Fixed bezel?!?! Have to admit that the Duro’s Bezel action is better than the Oris 65’s which is £1500!!!!! The dial of this is a winner for sure
I can assure you, if you are a diver (not SCUBA) you are going to be wearing a Rolex or Omega. Even in the '60s my dad wore a Rolex. Wish he had kept it tho it was a military one sold it once he gave up diving and got a solid gold one. Nice.
i believe its also useful for people that need a watch for daily activities at a heavily rained places. i would not trust a 5 bar watches in rainy situations. so this watches is better for outdoor people too
@@TonyAlloa Nowadays you won't find any divers using dive watches for anything else than fashion or nostalgia, we use dive computer that are way more reliable, accurate and feature packed.
There's a smaller alternative to the duro. The MDV-100D. Yeah it has a 43mm diameter but it way more affordable and has a smaller dial. Under 60 dollars. With the duro reaching 100 dollars these days the 100D is an affordable alternative. The availability is limited though. I can only buy it from a Japan seller.
It does have a nice dial, but ultimately I'm sure we'll agree the Duro is still king of the affordable true diver watches. And with six colourways to boot how can you go wrong?
I can't stand fixed bezels! I recently got the Casio MTD-1053D and I love it. Uni-directional bezel, 200m WR, screw down crown and its smaller than the Duro so sits well on my wrist. The only disappointment I've found is the lume...I saw it once a few days after I got the watch. The sun must've charged it well but I haven't seen it since lol.
If the dial is the same diameter, there just might be a way. I also wonder if the crystal is the same diameter as the Duro's, which would allow you to buy a ~$20 sapphire crystal from aliexpress and throw it on there (great Duro mod & not really hard).
You'd likely have to use the crown and stem from the Duro, which may not work given this is a day/ date complication and would potentially need trimming.
I've never felt any overpowering desire to own a Duro. But when I saw this watch I thought "Wow, I need one of those!". Solar power, decent WR, 24 hour markings, day/date and a nice looking handset. Then they wrecked it with a fixed bezel. So close, yet still a solid "nope" from me. I'm not a diver but I probably use either a timing bezel, or a countdown timer if it's digital, several times a week.
I was reluctant to buy a Duro myself, but in person its such a good looking watch, its become my daily beater, on a white stitched crocodile strap. Love it!
I don't think my respect for Casio can go any higher. I prefer the look of the Duro but this piece is still really good looking and honestly for anyone that is not actually planning on doing any diving this seems to be a banging choice.
you don''t have to be a diver to use that rotating bezel, I use mine several times a day. If you don't need the bezel you can get good looking watches that don't carry a fake bezel
I'm of the impression that dive watches have a different coloured minute hand because minutes are critical when diving and a different colour may be easier seen. A fixed bezel therefore makes the red colouring of the minute hand totally bloody pointless. The ball was definitely dropped on this. Great review as usual Ben. 👍
Whilst we won’t use the rotating bezel for its ‘intended function’ there are loads of things one does end up using it for. Fixed bezel renders the watch pointless. Now, if they could get this solar quartz module into the Duro, that would definitely work.
Ben. With the power capacity of this solar watch, why don't manufacturers go for sweep second hands? The power supply would be there and I think it would make a great aspect. No need for advanced engineering.
I have both watches and I had most of the same thoughts. I'm one of those that won't use the rotating bezel, so that was ok with that. But I would have preferred the water resistance features that the Duro offer. I swapped out the band for a mesh band very similar that they used for the A700, only not signed. But I have a wrist that they both fit well. The only thing I would have liked is adding a boarder around the hour hand as they did on the minute. Same color or even black would make it easier to read. My biggest issue is which one do I wear. :)
Fixed marked bezels are pointless. At most on a "Dive Watch". I never been diving but I use the bezel on daily tasks like how much time does it take to travel from one point to another by train. It can be a very practical tool.
I prefer the Duro. A real diver with 200m, screw down crown, cleaner dial, bezel works perfectly. Crazy value too as they are frequently available for under $50 US.
Never dive, but love my moveable bezel. Very handy for timing things. I use mine every time I put a load in the washing machine so I know when it's ready.
The Duro is a great watch looks good feels nice on ,the only small thing for me is the date window isn't bigger . But for £58 you can't go wrong with the Duro.
I have the Duro and use the rotating bezel every day for cooking or timing something. I'll stick with the mdv106 even though its a bit large on my wrist.
I love my mechanicals but nothing makes me happier than my gshock 5610 square. And now.. I have been wearing a black face duro for a couple days a week recently and I freaking love it. It only needs a strap upgrade.
If only this had a rotating bezel. I've been searching for a watch like this & was really really bummed about the bezel. I'm really hoping they listen to their customers & come out with a hybrid between the two.
Thanks for your input Ben! I would agree this is an interesting option for the money they are asking! Casio kills it once again, which they seem to be on a role the last few years.
My Duro is nearly 20 years old and still going only snag is no longer water resistant (surfing) despite new seals and grease so it's now just for gardening. Replaced it with a MRW-200H 4 years ago (what a watch!) So this alternate model would be great for me as I'd never need to change the battery and get Duro looks.
Basically make this watch but with the style and functionality of a Duro in a 40mm case. Casio would have a home run and I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I had a Duro and sold it because the case size was just too big for what it was. The small hour markers bugged me allot. I have the Casio Edifice EFM-100D-1A4V which I really like. It basically has all the features of the Duro but with a very comfortable metal band, it has a larger date display with an added day display and is a more properly scalled watch in terms of its face design. Plus it's a more original design instead of being yet another Rolex knock off. I got lucky and bought mine as new old stock for next to nothing with a dead battery. It's hands down a better watch then the Duro. It wasn't as popular because not every RU-vidr in existence pushed as being the best budget diver out there. Meanwhile it sold new for $70 lol.
I wear my Duro (Marlin) a lot. Nice looking, great build quality and accurate with spot on second hand and indices. This one has a great looking face as well so I’m becoming a huge Casio fan as well
@@topgazza That's great. Thank you! Do you think if I buy a nice Casio Duro that many ladies will look at me? I am looking for best watch for lady attraction, to help me find a nice lady. Thank you.
I have the Duro and love it. It looks beautiful and it feels solid. I have no plans on downgrading it. Solar feature is cool, but then again so is a battery that will likely last 6 or more years without touching it. I don't think it's possible to beat the Duro for the price.
I know this is an older video but I just came across it and my first thought was "I need to get one of these and another Duro and see if it's possible to mash them up into a 200 meter, screw down crown, solar "MTP-106" watch that carries with it the best of both of these models".
Looks nice I like the updated look but I honestly like the duro better & especially with the 200M water resistance puts the cherry on top I’m sticking with the Duro
I really enjoy watching your channel I’ve actually started a little bit of aG-SHOCK collection, i’m interested in getting an automatic… here’s a suggestion for a video “A watch that keeps ticking” I am after a Watch that won’t stop after 25 years like my dad‘s Seiko :/ perhaps he was unlucky but I’d be interested to watch. Keep it up 👍🏻
I have the gold bezel version as pictured and the seconds hand is spot on, got to have a rotating bezel. I have the Armjtron Atlas multifunction and it's bezel is fixed as well, it does give it a cheap feel even though I will never use it as intended.
Dude, I seriously wouldn't be mentioning you own an Armitron on a watch collectors channel. That's like saying you've got a fibreglass Pontiac Fiero 308 replica on a Ferrari channel !
I bought the Duro on a whim, thinking I would send it back to Amazon because it would be a low price piece of junk. It is now become my daily watch I wear to work. Who would’ve thought that this watch, maybe Bill Gates, was so good, especially for its price.
Answer imo is No. It's not a diver if it's 100m . Plus, I'm biased as a Duro is my daily driver, and it's a bit more fancy looking. The Duro wins on simplicity and dive specs
While I don’t dive, I find the rotating bezel on my Duro really handy in the kitchen. Put a pot of rice on, turn the bezel and I’ve got my timer sorted. This one’s a non-starter for me. Not going for a bezel this big and chunky if it’s stationary.
Do you know if the solar cell in this is the same as in the titanium Lineage model you reviewed some time ago ? If so, will it charge with ANY light source, like a Citizen, or only in sunlight ? Great review, by the way, thanks and keep up the good work. You are by far one of my favorite channels.
Have you looked into the Casio MTD-1053? It's a 40mm case diameter with better lume then the Marlin, the same water resistance, screw down crown, rotation bezel and just an awesome dial.
What do you define as the intended function of a rotating bezel? You said that statement about 30 seconds after I set my bezel to time the pasta on the stove. I may not be a diver, but I use a dive bezel almost everyday cooking dinner. For this reason, I couldn't image trying to wear a non-rotating dive or timing bezel.
Gah this watch has me conflicted! At first I thought it was really handsome & thoguht "man, if I had bigger wrists, I'd probably get this!". But with the non rotating bezel and push pull crown, I think I'm out! Just like you said, it;s a bit of a missed opportunity. And I need something to fiddle with. ;)
I know it's 'just' a casio , but watching someone passionately going into detail about a simple 'casio' , has me hooked........and now buying that casio. 🇦🇺 ⌚ 👍
MTP look modern compare to duro.dont mind the 10bar water resistant its good enough plus it just push crown.Duro have a classic, minimalist & rugged vibe.20bar on the duro is a plus even though I reckon many people use it as a diver watch but if you sent it to relume it has a potential to be a good diver watch
I like this dial design/layout. Great looking handset and I like the skeleton feature of them as well. 24 hour markers is a nice addition. Solar is a nice touch.
Damn, I have been hunting for a quartz watch that is exactly this for such a long time!! I’m happy that Casio finally made one!! Honestly, I really don’t mind the non-moving crown since I just like its aesthetic and not really gonna use it all that much. This is absolutely great. I wonder if it comes in black and gold like the Casio Duro? That said, thank you for reviewing this! Finally have something to look in watch shops and hunt this down.
Hi Ben, great review as always, love the look but, yes the compromise is the issue. I have 2 Duros, the original on a Nato and the so call "batman" on a metal bracelet and love them both. That non-movable bezel would bother me along with no screw down crown I thought would make it an easy decision but, the solar battery... has also been fantastic in my Edifice that I have had for 4 years. Who knows maybe one of these in the future. Thanks again.
Expert review. Very good photography. Solid voice over. Very good presenter. I am a watch nut. And I don't own many but I just like the idea of having my hearts content. Isn't that funny. I am saying Very Good Content. Casio dosent do what you do but both you and your work matches Casio! ❤ 👍
Personal opinion: I think the Duro would still be the better choice since its "cleaner" / better locking and cheaper. What they would have needed to do to make this MTP-S110 absolut banger (again, personal preference): 1. Remove the additional "case bubble" on the left side 2. Consistent grooving / jimpimg on the bezel or non at all 3. better looking bezel insert...this one looks really cheap for some reason The rest of the watch i pretty much do like. Dial, hands, solar, thats all nicely done :).
Btw it won't charge to 8 months of battery life in 8 minutes of sunlight. I assume that the 8 minutes of sunlight is enough daily exposure to keep it topped up. However if you let it run out for 8 months in a lightless box, it will take far more than 8 minutes in the sun to recharge it to full.
I like the look of this one but consider it way overpriced due to the solar component. I already have the black and blue Duros so passing on this for now. Id go for the blue/yellow colorway if it dropped in price.
I have suggestion to make a short comparing video between, specifically, W-59 with F-91. Yes, they are identical but I noticed on others channel that W-59 has a bit better backlighting, which is ideal for me. As I am planning to buy it for practical means - for daily shift in routines. Since I haven't used watch when phone was present in my everydy life, and now I find that I leave smart phone at home more and more. Eventually I may grab compact flip-phone and nice 23 gram watch with comfortable wrist. Eluminator is too bright for me and need just a better than F-91's. I guess some people have sensetive eyes at night.
Hey Ben, just wondering if you've ever considered the Casio telememo 30 AW80V-5BV. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I think it is right up your alley.
This watch really grabbed me at the start of the video, the fixed bezel has killed that interest stone dead though. I may never need it or use it but if it is there it has to work.
I never dive, but use my bezel almost daily... usually when the pizza place says my take out order will be ready in 20 minutes. I'll stay with my 2 (blue and black) Duros.
i am a sucker for day date divers, particularly quartz day date divers. before this i appreciates the complexity of automatic divers, but the more older i am, the more i appreciate the accuracy, cost savy, multi functional evergreen quartz day date divers
Some might be attracted by the solar power, but overall i feel that the Duro will still outlast this one with its modern classic status and it's still quite a bit cheaper.
And I wish it was a tad bigger. Alas, watches are more like clothing than we like to admit. A wide variety of people just need a wide variety of sizes. A lot of us are much bigger or much smaller than the "standard" wrist.
Great dial, markers and hands but the non rotating bezel is a strange decision by Casio. Agree that it’s probably rarely used but nice to have that option.
