CHINA is the epicentre of the electric vehicle earthquake and it alternates annually (between Shanghai and Beijing) to show off its incredible electric car credentials. We bring 'everything electric' to our expos around the world - next up Everything Electric NORTH (link below*) - but much like Western car companies, we can't compete with what China can offer. In this special episode, Elliot shows off the 10 BEST FROM BEIJING'S MOTOR SHOW. What excites you? & What did we miss?

The Zeekr Mix is one of the most interesting cars to come out of the exhibition as well as the Jac e30x. One of the main things I see missed is the advancements CATL continues to make. A condensed battery of 500wh/kg should be the highlight of the video.

The Japanese took over the world's auto market in the 70s-90s because American brands didn't believe they could do it, and were too lazy to stay ahead. This is China's 'Toyota' moment. Stinks to say because I would love for an American OEM lead the way along with Tesla.

The whole situation with the Chinese EVs and stuff kind of annoys me. Not because China's supposed to be bad or anything like that. It's just that most of the rest of the world feels like it doesn't even want to catch up to the Chinese brands... Some companies are working towards it, but so many are just so stubborn and stuck that they don't want to do anything to actually improve. They just keep forcing ICE vehicles and going back on EV plans... I just find it annoying that most companies around the world aren't really willing to provide such cool cars. And after so much talk of becoming less dependent on China and whatnot, we're back to depending on them if we want an actually cool car that doesn't cost an arm, a leg and a brother or something...
@ericawong2135

Totally understandable and reasonable comment. What if I told you that the legacy automakers have all acknowledged that they CANNOT beat China in EVs and that they know it's too late. If you accept that as a fact, what should they do now? Does that better explain why they're doing what they're doing? Some recent articles to consider, "Ford Chairman admits US can't compete with China on EVs", "China’s EV competition is so fierce that Volkswagen ‘cannot keep up’", "Elon Musk Warns That Chinese Automakers Will “Demolish” Western Rivals Unless Trade Barriers Are Established". A Goldman Sachs analyst wrote recently (sorry can't find the article) that all legacy automaker CEOs have realised that they cannot compete with China. The most obvious immediate solution is to put up barriers to entry in domestic markets as the USA has done and as the EU is contemplating. The other is to put out propaganda to confuse the consumer as the US and Japan are presently doing.

@@ericawong2135 that's an interesting view, but I believe the matter is quite more complicated than it appears. Legacy car makers are not exactly doing nothing. Many of them, having realized it's too late to catch up with China, are signing deals to cooperate with Chinese EV automakers. This will allow them to produce legacy brands cars based on Chinese EV platforms. There is also another major thing to consider: EV charging infrastructure. This is a responsibility of Countries' governments. If a Country has an underdeveloped chargers' network, how can EVs be expected to sell well? Why should legacy carmakers invest their billions on EVs that they can't sell properly because the infrastructure is not there yet? In this regard China did a great job preparing a decent charging infrastructure, making it actually convenient for people to own an EV.

Not sure this video showed a fight back of any legacy brand. Rather it highlighted, on a minute scale, how far ahead the Chinese EV industry is ahead of the rest of the world. Living in China I've seen a transformation in those 5 years that took Hyundai 25 years. And today I see the same scale of transformation happening again. I think the legacy manufacturers didn't take China seriously. Their loss is now leading to tariffs to protect themselves. Too little, too late methinks.

I heard the Chinese automakers have been hiring European designers lately and it really shows, these are some absolutely gorgeous vehicles. Which begs the question... if the Chinese marques were able to find these designers and bring them to China to reinvent their brands... why couldn't the European and American automakers find these people? Especially the German marques... I don't understand what they are doing at all. Its like they all peaked in the early 2000s and then all simultaneously got amnesia and forgot what they were doing.

@@MaticTheProto Audi has spent a decade making Ford Taurus clones. VW is making bland lumps, although they are a slight improvment over the previous iteration of bland. Mercedes made some nice looking concepts that for some reason did not translate into the metal well at all. And the interiors are the cringiest, tackiest interiors in the industry right now. And BMW has been an absolute horror show of clashing design motifs and hideous grills and tacky interiors for way too long. They have some nice looking new concepts, we will see how those translate to real cars. Every single one of them had dramatically better looking cars 15 to 20 years ago, it's not even close.

Thanks for the work. I really like a lot of these Chinese EV's. That Smart, or several small 2--door fun or cabrio EV's. For those huge 7 seat behemoth EV's, I see little use. Specially for over 60% of the world population. . . . the 1 or 2 person households. When you have 4 kids, a dog and a canary, yes. For the masses, no. And, as cheap as they are in China, the prices are often more than double when they sell them in the EU. Around €30.000 and up, is the standard. All these promises for affordable Chinese EV's with at least a decent 300km range, for the masses are still fake stories. Except for the EU build Citroën ëC3 EV. That indeed starts below €25.000. We bought one this week. So China . . . . and Tesla . . . .you are all to late with your bla bla about a €25k affordable EV.

Americans: I can understand wanting to bolster jobs and manufacturing at home, but the last I checked, the climate crisis does NOT stop at any country's borders. We need fewer tailpipes worldwide! Immediately! If we therefore have to grit out teeth, pinch our noses, and allow China to import their EVs here… so be it. They're truly compelling vehicles!

Yes, and no... currently world-wide production isn't enough to meet demand (which is why world-wide EV sales are continuing to grow healthily). Thus, if Chinese EVs aren't sold in the US, they'll be sold in other countries - and offset the same number of vehicles (and given the low average milage of 'merkins, probably offset more emissions)... Thus in terms of impact on emissions in the short term, it's pretty minimal. However, if EV production doesn't take off in the US in the next 3-4 years then it will start to become an issue - and fast.
@blattimus

There isn’t a climate crisis, that’s just bad science which has been massively overhyped for money. And I’d there was, and if tiny amounts of CO2 made any difference, EVs wouldn’t be a solution. Their only purpose is making well-heeled Westerners feel better about themselves, while increasing unethical mining labour practices and environmental contamination on a massive scale.
