ICE vehicles are on fire and putting out pounds to tons of emissions every time they are used. Last time I checked reported figures in the U.S., on average, over 15,+++ ICE vehicles catch on fire every year and only a handful of EV's, but you would think they are going off like fire crackers on the 4th of July.. How many ICE fires were not reported. I have over 60-years, had several unreported ICE vehicle fires. Luckily, none of my vehicles were burned down, though, I have seen plenty on the road, in garages and carports burned to the ground* and in the wrecking yards. Batteries_ The most common thing reported by the deliberately ignorant after cost and range, is the cost of replacing batteries and recycling. They just don't believe that batteries last a long time and there are big issues with recycling and Lithium mining cuz of the very effective anti EV campaign agenda and inherent personal sentiments against change. I look forward to the day when we no longer need your reporting on the current state of passive electrification solar/wind etc, storage, EV development, and EV adoption, but I will miss these timely reports and your upbeat and kick dummy ass attitude. In the U.S. we have special fire codes for constructions configured to have a garage or attached carport. This is because of the frequency of ICE fires. When storing my collector cars and motorcycles I alway pulled the ground cable of the battery and put it on the charging bench. My airplane had the negative cable pulled when hangered.

The majority of people will never do over 100k miles in any car they own. Ive owned a few cars, never done more than 20k in any of them and the longest I owned one car was about four years. But the first statement I hear when EV is a conversation is the batteries fail after 100k miles.

An additional study by that agency and an American insurer found that just 25 out of 100,000 EVs suffer fire damage. By comparison, 1530 per 100,000 ICE cars experience fire, and hybrid vehicles suffer a much higher risk of 3475 per 100,000.

Excellent report as usual. The figures coming out of China for their electrification are mind boggling! Considering your figures on worldwide uptake of EV's at 20% would love to see a report on how this is affecting Diesel/Petrol production. Even at 20% the profits of the fossil fuelers must be taking a hit in this space.

After just 46,000 miles and 4 1/2 years of ownership, last week Tesla service advised me against driving my car as the HV battery was about to fail. It is now at the service centre awaiting a replacement HV battery. My main concern is the potential poor standard of the replacement refurb battery, the lack of extended warrantee (it will still be based on my car's age and total mileage) and the potential cost of a future out of warrantee replacement if it fails again. Tesla say it would cost just under GBP £20,000 ($25,000). More than the value of the car which, by the way, is dropping like a stone! I am now questioning the value of EVs. The batteries are clearly unreliable and expensive to replace. When the HV battery fails, the warrantee does NOT cover a new replacement battery. Apparently, the chance of receiving an unreliable replacement battery under warrantee is high because they are refurbished from a previously failed battery. Therefore the seemingly generous 120k mile warrantee isn't helpful. Now that my head is full of all these concerns, I will not buy another Tesla. Currently, I am concerned my car will become a worthless risk as soon as the warrantee period is up. I have been very careful with my charging habits since owning my car from new and diligently followed the 80/20 rule charging mostly at home.

I still remember Robert saying "just sayin'" regarding his view of increased heat pump use to cool buildings "heating" the world a bit (I think he asked the question "where does the heat go" or some such thing with the intent to imply - it was a while a go in the information threads in my head so I might be a bit muddled now) ... but this was in terms of electricity use as he was saying even if all the electricity use was renewable. I left a long comment for that video. Anyway - I think he was "virtue signalling" there because of this negative bias toward "air conditioning". For some reason people are obsessed with heating, but look down on those who prefer cooling. (I prefer cooling). They seem to like to make snide remarks about people who like air conditioning. With that voice (I think) he likes to adopt for the EV naysayers / misinformation-purveyors. Similarly disregarding perspective afforded by physics/reality. I mention it, because I think Robert is is just as vulnerable to these sorts of biases that prevent reality seeping in, as some of the EV naysayers etc. :) Reminds me of the BBC's apparent attitude. :) And I know I struggle myself with some elements of reality I might prefer to overlook. However ... I think if I want to win some one over to my way of thinking, then just getting more shouty and not finding common ground, admitting vulnerability, and seeking to understand each other and where exactly the difference in reality experience can be tripped over, is not always that helpful. Though it's still entertaining, Robert's own lack of perfection can sometimes undermine the impact I might otherwise feel. I guess it can help reach more people thanks to the entertainment factor. (nb: if he'd spoken in terms of leaked refrigerant then that would be an argument with merit ... but he didn't.) -- Also - Tesla. Getting rid of the charger team. It seems like a shame, it "feels" "sad", and seems counter-intuitive. But looking at where Tesla are right now, it does seem to make sense to me. Business sense. If sales of current models are saturating in current market conditions and competition with China is heating-up, and if other manufacturers can make use of NEC EV charging now since it's an open standard - then it's questionable as to why Tesla should keep pouring money in to it if they're not going to see a return on that investment any time soon. Be divesting the team it might provide an opportunity for other manufacturers to step in or 3rd parties? If they can make the UX as good as Tesla's then everyone's a winner? (It would be great if that fired Team could set-up a new company rolling out chargers / charging services... though not sure if that would be legally possible). What would be the point in Tesla bank-rolling further charging innovation and network expansion if it doesn't make much difference now in sales of their cars? To keep going beyond what they've already achieved ... on and on. (I'm sure existing chargers will be maintained and new ones still rolled out ... but just not as a big push, in the immediate future). Tesla always try to look toward the future. When they were looking at making EVs so desirable and popular, they had the incumbent legacy manufacturers and the fossil fuel industry casting dubious outlooks on such ventures. Now they're prioritising AI, self-driving and robots, the current crop of EV User/Champion incumbent's cast dubious outlooks on such prioritising and hark back to the start-up days when they were the underdog leading the common cause. From a distant perspective it seems sort of amusing. If Tesla get it "right", then they'll open up other much larger income streams, and they'll be able to reduce their manufacturing costs somewhat more, for starters. And at least stay in the same race as the Chinese. If they act more like a Charity just to appease the uptight, then they might please many people for now, but lose out in the longer-term and fade out of relevancy. Setting out on a path to make a much cheaper car right now seems fraught with difficulty; technical hurdles and pitfalls when it comes to competing with China and vulnerability/liability in sourcing some components in our politically turbulent world and working with Western labour. To make it much cheaper will likely need all those big investments into single part stamping thingies and establishing more magnesium usage (and not relying on China for it's supply) and squeezing the new architectures into it where it saves money. I think they're right to focus on the things where they do have differentiation in a good way - where they have a lead and existing competency and a strong vision, that can underpin future efforts more substantially. They then might still realise more cost-savings even with cars trimmed down a bit on existing factory lines. The cyber truck might seem gimmicky and unnecessary ... and a bit light on meeting many promises and seems to have a host of issues, but in terms of vehicles, I think it has a chance to worm it's way into popular culture and consciousness in a net-positive way for Tesla. Plus it's using a bunch of new standards etc. ... it's like a test bed for a bunch of stuff. I think it's being undervalued in terms of it's ongoing increasing relevance. I really want to see more Tesla semi's. And I think they might reach another layer/cohort of people if they made a vehicle - e.g. Model 3/Y etc. version that had more physical controls rather than relying on the screen. I imagine that might put off a lot of people just as it appeals to so many. It might be more realisable with the upgraded wiring (networks vs CAN bus etc.) with in a reasonable cost envelope. -- *Sigh*. Despite reservations, it is still "fun" to watch Robert's ... passion unfold so energetically.

The reason you see all these electric trucks in California is not cost savings to the corporations. It is because California state transportation and environmental laws have certain mandates for it. I'm totally for going electric if planned out reasonably well. But even the state of California doesn't think they will have the power generation and distribution to support their 2035 mandates for EVs and electrified delivery trucks with out spending 50 billion dollars. And that is not even making sure said power generation is green energy. Everything will go electric eventually. But Amazon building 100,000 charging stations across the nation is nothing compared to the 30+ million California vehicles that will eventually need energy and a place to charge in one single state.

Just a comment on the Tesla layoffs , there was a request to the team head to reduce specifically marketing and design people as that phase was done, the head actually stated a need for MORE staff, this was not an acceptable response, hence the layoffs. Excellent report. Now for reality. Electric planes are not realistic. Even the Pipistrel is no more than a novelty. It was given as a 50 minute "range" with 10 minute reserve. I won't be flying in something where there is not at least a 30 minute fuel reserve. That means 30 minutes of flying and a maximum distance of perhaps 60 miles. That is worthless for cross-country flying in the USA. The recharge time is not workable. I can refuel an RV-6A in perhaps ten minutes and have a four hour flight time. Maybe you use it for touch and go flight and stay right by the airport. Fine but you fly for perhaps 45 minutes then the plane is down for charging for perhaps 45 minutes. That is a lot of downtime for an expensive plane. The whole concept of "net zero" as a response to the hoax known as climate change is asinine. I will end my comment with a compliment that the host (Sorry, I did not catch her name) is beautiful. I would suggest that she is as incredible as Kate Middleton appears to be.

No news on why Goverments are not forcing all Gas/Petrol Sations to install FAST CHARGING systems. Is it the oil corporations again not allowing this service?
@jim9930
@jim9930 Час назад
It is mainly real estate cost. Most gas stations in the USA are small chains or 'mom & pop' sized. We have three public charging locations in my county: Walmart, Lowes, Nissan dealership (they already have space). Second, it is much more expensive to install EV charging... grants are hard to get without the corporate staff to do the paperwork. Third, density of owners is not at a critical mass to turn a profit. Gas stations only operate on 3% margin with existing infrastructure. New construction has crashed with higher interest rates. FOLLOW the MONEY edit: I'll add this... Of the local towing companies, NONE can afford the training or insurance cost - I asked the largest (six trucks) why he won't tow. $100,000/truck, how many tows at a grand a piece to break even?!? NO local service centers for similar reasons.

EVs are not the future. ICE vehicles are not the future. The problem with the EV push is that it is in response to the scam known as climate change...which is not real. The climate change zealots go at least back to circa 1970 when they were predicting a global ice age. Drive your Energizer battery cars if you wish but stop using your climate change religion as justification for trying to force everyone to buy one. Save that coercion for your communist utopia.

When I bought my second hand Leaf in 2018, I had to drive an hour away just to see three of the only four used EV's anywhere in the Eastern Ontario Region where I live. At that point, there was simply no used EV market. Today, after Tesla, GM, Ford, Nissan... have been selling EVs for 5-10 years, there is finally a second hand market. Imagine if there was no second hand ICE vehicles available, then suddenly there was. Do you think that would effect the market? Of course it would and its silly to think otherwise. By the way, the 2014 Leaf I bought in 2018 is still going strong, with very little battery degradation and will likely give me another 5 years of driving, 5-10 years of stationary storage, then I will take it up the road to the recycling facility where they will extract all the valuable minerals to start the cycle all over again. Where will we get all the electricity if everyone starts driving EVs? Once we shut down the refineries that use more electricity to make a gallon of gasoline than my EV uses to drive the same distance, we will have plenty of electricity. And because my EV is 95% efficient, we will make better use of that electricity than wasting 70-80% of it in ICE vehicles.

It reminds me of the Kodak corporation sticking with film and refusing to get on board with digital photography. How many Kodak cameras do you see these days? Re: fires in EVs?
