Culture shocks are real. I have decided to share my experiences of life in Germany as a Brit, as well as the beautiful places I am lucky enough to visit.
My meditative videos show a calming and artistic view of the places I visit and the quiet, peaceful wanders I take through them. Medieval villages, picturesque cottages, beautiful cities. Relax and escape with me from the busy bustling world to my dreamy and serene slow living way of seeing my surroundings. Experience the magic of peering into the past and being in a fairytale, just for a little while.

Yes, Langeoog is quite special. And your comments about the character of the news are just true. But the Germans took it over from the old BBC, as after the war German media in the North was controlled by the British army, guided by BBC officers. They established rules and these rules are conserved in the public run media, which are dominant in Germany.
@LaureninGermany

This is so interesting! The British news didn’t used to be like this, how it is today. It used to be something to be proud of. It seems the Germans have recognised the value of the standards and kept them. Thank you so much for telling me.

Even the structure of the goverment is partly influenced by the british System. The President has the same function as the King (Representative, Head of State, sign laws, dessolve parlament, be neutral to daily politics). Our Chancelor is the equivalent of the Prime Minister (Elected by the ruling coalition as their "CEO") Our President of the Parlament is a little bit like the Speaker of the house of commons (in german the second highest representant of the state, even higher ranked as the Chancelor). You have the house of commons and house of lords, we have the Bundestag (Parlament) and the Bundesrat (here US influence is higher) who is a little bit like the US-Senat (representants of the States have to agree to all federal Laws that are related to or are conflicting with State laws and responsibilities).

we southerners in germany know full well that we do not speak "clearly". we speak real "at home" german, not the stuff they teach you in school. We just use that for the tourists, and the news, which are better than here in the US. and, yes, my wife also does not know anything about her car, except the color she picked, and how to connect her phone to it. they all have names, too. but usually it is the brown car, the orange car, the green car. Sometimes we borrow the red car from in-laws....
@LaureninGermany
@LaureninGermany Год назад
@@uliwehner maybe living so close to the Audi town made me make more effort with the car makes! Hochdeutsch is a really cool thing, that way all the regional dialects survive but we can still communicate. I‘ve got pretty good at understanding Bairisch, but some local terms are impossible if you don’t live in that village. I always appreciate it when someone speaks Hochdeutsch when I can’t keep up. And actually, of course people speak clearly, it’s just the different sounds that are confusing if you’re unfamiliar. I was just teasing.

Haha, that was so sweet and humorous (is that right??) - and again the most beautiful filming quality and brilliant sights come together with it. Thank you for another beautiful piece! 😀 Such white sand on the strand! Do people in the world even know that we have this here in the north? And those peaceful and quiet little villages with gardens and simple but gemütliche architecture .. and ordinary people chatting on the sidewalks, on bus stations or over the garden fence: That`s how many of the smaller areas on the edges of our cities do look and feel. I also live in such an area, on the "rear" of Bremen, I can walk on foot over the border between Bundesland Bremen and Niedersachsen, where I grew up on the edge of woodland and fields. Well, the style of news ... I like it here. To learn more of what is going on in the rest of the world I also listen to - or watch - american and british news and I notice the difference. Especially the US news seems to be more like a "show", informative somehow but at the same time entertaining with its more dramatic way to mix up pictures, music, facts and "meaning", and: it is so very politically influenced. Maybe Germany never gave up that very "serious", neutral and "clean" style of news because Germans like to distinguish facts and data from personal feelings and drama so very much, also in many other areas. After WW II as a time where propaganda and ideology had ruled every news, happenings and even cinema so very badly people longed for truth and clearness without drama and manipulation.But that also brought us the deadly "blossoming " of a bureaucracy which kills us all now, haha! ;-) Rules and regulations for simply everything - except the grains of sand on the coast: They (still) are allowed to lay (or blow) wherever they want to. But maybe it is not really "German" sand - and behaves like the people in that famous little Gallic village where they have Zaubertrank and a dog that`s called Idefix, who knows. The Fresians once were quite a rebellic and peculiar people. Maybe that`s why their sand blows here and there and everywhere all the time - and when we smile about the loveliness of the landscape also between our teeth. 😀.

Honestly, I lived in Germany for years and did not know anything about the North Sea or the islands....! It was a revelation! I felt sooooo at home when I first went to Dornum. The atmosphere, how you described it, made me let go of some kind of tension. And I understand even more why the German news is so "trocken", after reading your comment. It´s good! These "shows" - you have it exactly right...! Have a lovely evening, dear ShadowHall!
@shadowhall1501
@shadowhall1501 Год назад
@@LaureninGermany Yes ... but with the same Trockenheit and "honesty" they started to tell us more and more things from a special perspective and left other things out - because it is .. useful for (the rulers of) the country. But anyway: There IS love in this world, as Sam Gamdschie said to Frodo on the edge of the Schicksalsberg. And that alone is a million times worth to always care for truth and freedom, peace and love for the world, nature and people. In this moment I am giving good things and much love into the world by baking some lovely Mitternachtsbananenpfannkuchen (provocatively long word, haha) with Dinkelmehl and oats and let the spirit of those Midnightbananapfannkuchen fly through my kitchen window into the world and do its wonderful thing, they are baked with joy, love and hope for all and everything. Pfannkuchen, together with some other things, are like Galadriels light, like she said to Frodo when she gave it to him: "May it be a light to you in dark places when other lights go out". And after spreading the magic of the Pfannkuchen to bring some extra love and sweetness into the sleeping world, I will sit and write for some hours because at the moment I can choose freely when to write and when to sleep, tomorrow there is no other task waiting than writing more. I love to work when it is quiet outside and in the house. So... I will have a lovely evening and night, thank you!

I was up all last night making the video - I understand you well, the peace, the quiet, the lack of time pressure, my neighbour´s horrific lawn robot is silent... Hi Lauren, thanks again for your wonderful views on Germany and my beloved North Sea in particular. Well, in Germany you can serve yourself from a buffet of various landscapes, foods and even tribal cultures. You have a look on the essentials, your videos show this very well. Regarding news and work/life balance, we have to be careful not to jump train regarding commercializing news and squeezing out the last energy from people to keep them in a rush hour modus, even in so-called leasure time. This makes people feel that they miss something and reach out for more and more without any reflection. This leads to an ill society and a loss of democratic and civilized behaviour. Sometimes it appears to be on purpose to prevent people from thinking at all. Enjoy the wonderful island. A good north sea breeze refreshes heart and mind. 😻

Haha Lauren, seems today is another day of "culture shocks". First the video from Bennekon aka. Brit in Germany and now your take on. Lets see :) First indication of you being germanized I noted when you specified the exact moment - not just the day but as well the hour AND minute. German accuracy and precision. Talking about sensationalized messages, you are so right. Seems to be the same as well nowadays for nost new videos on RU-vid, especially english ones to grab attention. Seems something I will never really getting used to. I had to laugh very hard when you said that the Bavarians speak so clearly, but your facial expression showed the exact opposite. Some of your statements brought back memories, like the one when you said you would like to bottle the sensation of Langeoog to take it with you. When I was a kid, we literally did this during vacation at the Baltic Sea. Grabbing a nice bottle, fill it with fine white beach sand, a few small shells and a few small pieces of amber. Sealing it and put it for display on the shelf at home. Or the German way of vacation. I still remember one of my last vacations together with my granddaughter a few years ago. On "normal weekends" I was used to her still sleeping until at least 10:00. On our vacation, however, she woke me up every day at 6:30 to 7:00 because she wanted to be one of the first at breakfast in the hotel, so that afterwards, as one of the first guests, she could also get the best seat in the front row at the pool. Anyway, stay as you are - a little German, a little Welsh. That's what distinguishes you, makes you unique. I love your way.

Oh I am so glad I made you laugh! I was worried about offending Bavarians, but I couldn’t resist…! Remind me never to go on holiday with your granddaughter..! @@LaureninGermany I don't think you have offended them. In the area where we both live, it can happen that Bavarians themselves do not understand each other when talking among themselves in the local dialect. They even say so themselves and I have experienced that while in one village you could communicate well, right in the next village you might not understand anything. Don't worry about my granddaughter, she's 20 now and doing her own thing instead of going on vacation with her grandpa, haha. That's what her boyfriend has to take care of now and that's fine. By the way, I am a night owl myself, so I do understand you very well. Have a great Sunday too, at least the weather today looks promising. :)

I don't know if you have this phenomenon across the pond, but here, in the US, we have a 24-hour news cycle which I don't trust. It's not healthy for a human being to be obsessed with hearing news, 24 hours a day. Two hours a day at the _very_ most is, I think, all around, a good idea, but we tend to mistake the state of being more _informed_ with the act of hearing more _news._ To compound it, though, I don't trust _cable_ news. I mean, in particular, I don't trust _cable_ and _satellite._ It doesn't make sense for TV networks to rely on revenue from _subscribers._ Isn't the revenue they get from their _sponsors_ enough? Thus, for my news, I turn to regular, network TV. But even there, one or two hours a day is my _absolute limit._ I tell you, though, in my days of turning to the _radio_ for news, I was quite impressed with National Public Radio which, overnight, piped in the BBC. I heard news there _about the US_ that I wasn't hearing on _US_ news networks.
@LaureninGermany
@LaureninGermany Год назад
Exactly that. That is why I started listening to more than one country´s news. It can absolutely get me down, though. Not just the awful news, but the awful way it is delivered... Even on RU-vid you see how channels cater to their audiences, I think it´s eye-opening. And makes me thankful for my relatively small, but really great audience.

Dear Lauren, i'm sorry to disappoint you, but your way of setting up the water supply for a cute little cottage was exactly what i had in my house in the London suburbs some 20 years ago. It seems you have become a bit more anglo-saxon. But in the end those Angeln and Sachsen came from northern Germany anyway. I don't have a clue if their way of living is responsible for the weird presentation of news on british TV nowadays or if german TV has more roots in the prussians. We might never find out. So, maybe you're on a good way to become a real german sooner or later. However, the beginnings are clearly visible. But please, keep a bit welsh.
@LaureninGermany

Anglo-Saxon?! Oh, for a Welsh woman that’s quite a provocation! But absolutely, the English are so German. The more you look, the clearer it is. I‘ll never lose the Welshness, Peter. They even tried to train it out of me. Didn’t work. P.s. I am so proud that my water system is proven!

Mark my words.

If I get the grand commentary I might as well watch political satire. Nothing beats the feeling of sand and the North Sea around your feet and wind in your face, we visited another car free neighbor of the island and they have this Motto Entschleunigen. I ate fish, curls are naturally gorgeous there because of the salty air and the frisian tea tastes extra amazing. Not to mention the cheesecake we got in this old frisian house from the 17th century, they had embroidered head protections warning to duck above the doors and everything was a little crooked. I love the serenity of that region, let’s not rush or stress unless we really have to, true quality of life.
