There have been lots of people saying that Araki has gone too far with the newest chapter of The JOJOLands, but I feel as though this has all been the usual JoJo fare. I wanted to do a deep dive talking about the last chapter, the Joestar siblings' flashback, and the future of The JOJOLands. This is only the beginning after all and if this is the prologue, things are gonna get a lot more intense...

I mean, there was a trans man in Stone Ocean, that's like 1999 or 2000. Its when Jolyne gets a medical check and she thinks theres a man, and the doctor says its a girl on hormones. So Araki clearly isn't just using trans people as a hot button topic, he included one in 1999.

Anasui? That’s conjecture and not official. Araki’s comments on it was he wanted an androgynous character, and that was always the intention. So it’s very possible Anasui was always a man and the design just changed.

This chapter really shows how important Dragona is without them Jodio could have easily become a monster. This might be a stretch but if Jodio is meant to be like Dio maybe Dragona could be like Jonathan in some way

This latest chapter has been the most interesting chapter so far, and I believe he handled the very intense and disturbing subject matter of violence against gender non conforming people well. It really made me love and care about Dragona even more than I already did. I especially can't wait to see where he takes Jodio's character specifically

I completely agree with you here, Araki tackled the subject very honestly and showed the struggles that Trans / GNC people have to go through. And to think this is just when Jodio is 11, what else is he willing to do now that he’s older?

Obviously i will be watching this video after i leave this comment, but in regards to the backlash to this chapter, i have been thoroughly confused. I understand someone with similar experiences possibly being triggered (ugh i hate how that word has been tainted) by something similar. This scene is not only vehemently on the side of the victim, but the scene itself is meant to represent more than just the assault. It represents the alienation of queer individuals for simple minded reasons, it represents how even good people tend to not run to the defense of a queer individual for fear of alienation themselves. Secondly, if it was simple shock value, it wouldn't have primarily focused on Dragona and they pain they felt in the aftermath. Someone who goes through a traumatic event like that **will** try to brush it off as no big deal in a desperate attempt to return to normalcy. The assault itself is four pages, while the aftermath is 15+ The assault is brought up as an example of societal isolation and abuse. And a third of the chapter is dedicated to the victim working through that pain and realizing the truth of the matter. I understand being in a state of shock or discomfort, it's touchy material. But lashing out and calling it "bad writing" or "cheap shock value" is missing the point harder than the emerald splash misses its opponents.

Exactly! The point of the scene isn't to add a shock value to the chapter. It's not meant to poke fun at victims like some people think for some reason. This is a real thing that happens to people. As a trans woman, I myself find myself relating. Although I do find the scene uncomfortable, the point is that yeah, it's uncomfortable. But Dragona is a strong person. Like you said, it's about the aftermath. It's meant to show how resilient Dragona is, and in my opinion, can also be interpreted as showing that victims can emerge strong. Araki takes the side of the victim.

I will say the 1st time I read the chapter I was like "Damn when is homie Dragona gonna catch a break! 1st chapter 1 then this!" Besides that I thought it was fine because it serves a narrative purpose, and isn’t just shock value. This may be unintentional on Araki's part, but I think it serves a connection between this chapter and the 1st. Cause it shows another layer as to why Jodio was so violent towards the cops. Obviously because they attacked his brother, but because they were doing the same things Dragona's bullies did. But when Charmingman attacked Dragona, Jodio kinda was over it after the fight. Maybe the reason was because it didn't have the same SA undertones as the cops or the bullies. In a way that "absurd event" had as much of an affect on Jodio as it did on Dragona. While Dragona responsed with wanting to imrove themselves, Jodio wanted to improve their world/situation, and in a much more violent manner.

Love the way you brought this back to the events of Chapter 1 and I completely agree. There's definitely more of an intensity to Jodio in Chapter 1 and I feel like things could get even more intense as things ramp up

I’m currently questioning my gender identity AND an enormous JoJo fan and I can totally understand why people might be uncomfortable with this scene. Don’t get me wrong, it is meant to be and is portrayed as an uncomfortable scene, but so is every other assault (like Lucy Steel and Funny Valentine as you mentioned). I think the backlash is mainly due to Dragona being the first non-conforming character to be put in this kind of situation - we’ve never seen someone of this identity before in JoJo, and especially not in this situation. I do agree with it being *uncomfortable*, but this scene being included is not out of pocket for Araki.

I’m glad that you agree. I really respect what Araki did here by showing such a realistic depiction of the struggles trans / GNC people go through. I was worried about wording things inappropriately since I wanted to showcase that things were the same and some people disliked the scene (outside of feeling uncomfortable) specifically since Dragona was the victim.

We have already been presented with two songs by King Crimnson, the matte kudasai and the howler, the protagonist has pants similar to Doppio's, each chapter convinces me more that King Crimnson will appear again at some point in the part.

Great video! What I love about Araki more than most other mangaka is his desire to show characters that exist in the real world through the bizarre lens of its story and characters. Also, there’s nuance to the scene too. Like, even though Dragona is moving to a female presenting identity, Jodio still calls them Big Bro because he associates the use of the term Sister with the bully (the very first use of his stand and the word specifically triggered it to harm her. ) It’s likely he’s waiting for Dragona to give him notice/permission to call them Big Sis or whatever they decide, and it would be a sweet moment between the two. TBH after the hints at Paco having been to jail, I’m really excited to see what Araki’s cooking with him

What you bring up in that second section is really great. I'd be very curious to see how Araki writes out Dragona's development and how the interactions between them and Jodio would be written since it'd be breaking new ground for JoJo. And I definitely agree that even though the story can be absolutely insane, it is in the real world with people going through real struggles.

I love this! That would be some great development. I also like to think Dragona might already be on Hormone Replacement Therapy given what Jodio says about her chest. Cosmetic injections could mean HRT injections.

As a trans man i think Araki knows what he is doing, my husband thinks so too and my friends who are also jojo fans and queer think so too like yeah its definitely cruel but so its life and in the context of america it makes sense sadly (not American here but my husband is so yeah) past parts have explored quite messed up scenarios, in this case its extremely bleak bc of how often it can escalate and people would just let it happen, until someone says enough

Imma be for real. I haven't caught up to jojos, i remember finishing part four and not even getting past the 5th chapter of part 5. I dont know exactly why i just stopped, part four was the best arc i read so far i guess i was just burnt out of it- but ive always been at least watching videos like this trying to see what araki has been up to with jojos- who knows ill maybe start right where i left off in part 5 or i could reread from the beginning.

Part 4 is indeed a banger, but I’d definitely recommend catching up with the anime if you ever feel inclined. Lots of people loved the Part 5 anime adaptation and Part 6 has many great moments although the animation quality doesn’t reach the same level on average.

As someone who takes "cosmetic injections" of my own to swell my chest, this has led me to believe that Dragona is on HRT. OR that Dragona is using their stand :p As someone fem presenting that still uses he/him, Dragona is epic.

TLDR: No. This is par for the course for JoJo. The only people who don't like it from what I can see (usually) are people who've actually gone through the same things as Dragona has (which is perfectly understandable) or conservatives (who's opinions do not matter)

I have no problem with the scene in isolation, what gives me a bad feeling is that dragona feels singled out. This is the third time (first was the cops, second was the guards at the jewelry story) this happened in my opinion. Irrigarlas of any trans factor one character being singled out like this repeatedly does make me worried

ok, this was an issue like over a year ago. are people still talking about this like it matters anymore? the shock value from dragona being trans or whatever is already gone, and its not really trans if its just repressed trauma causing multiple personality disorder or using a persona as a mask to hide trauma.

I think the bus scene was really good at characterising jodio and giving us a new perspective on dragona; what I’m less of a fan of is that they were sexually assaulted on the first chapter, I just hope this doesn’t become a pattern, like how yasuho being traumatised was in part 8. Other than that I think the part is going really well, can’t wait for it to get to a proper villain

@@Kev-D-OG Nah, just in Phantom Blood we saw how someone burned a dog, bullied a boy, kissed his girlfriend by force... All Jojo parts have strong shocking moments, Fugo also suffered an attempt of abuse as Dragona, but no one said anything. I didn't misinterpreted anything, I just pointed out the double standard.
