Unfortunately, I’ve got disappointing news for anyone who’s invested in the PlayStation VR2, like I have.
There’s a new report from Android central that details some insider information on Sony’s plans for the future of the PSVR2, and it has me a bit worried. Look, this is a great headset and on it you can play a lot of awesome games from third-party developers, but it has seen very little support from Sony in the form of first-party exclusive games. We’ve pretty much only seen Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Gran Turismo 7, which really isn’t a dedicated VR game, it just has an optional VR mode.
And both of those games are great, but I don’t think it’s a hot take to say that Sony hasn’t really put much effort into developing games for this headset. And here’s where that report from Android Central comes in. According to them, Sony currently has only two games in development for the PSVR2. But there's a chase that neither of those games will actually make it to market, because it’s also reported that Sony is making deep cuts to the funding of VR games.
Unfortunately, I think all the signs point towards this report being true. A few months back, we got news that Sony had completely stopped production on PSVR2 headsets, because of lack of demand. And just a few weeks ago, we got the announcement that there will soon be an adapter available that makes it so that you can use a PSVR2 with PC. Now, I like the idea of a PC adapter, but I think the fact that Sony is un-aligning this headset with the PS5 is really telling. And, unfortunately, I don’t expect to see much, if any, first-party support from Sony in the future. I just don’t think Sony sees a lot of room for profit in VR. And, although I don’t think they’ve completely given up on VR, I don’t think they’re that invested into it either.
