For many people across the country, St George's Day is a time for whimsical displays and pride in English life - but in London yesterday celebrations turned violent as protestors clashed with police.
Is Saint George's Day traditional or is it toxic? Lee Juggernauth thinks that people should be able to celebrate St George's Day. And Narinder Kaur who thinks it is time to leave it in the past.

The saddest part of this segment was the fact that 45% of the poll responders thought that St. George's day is toxic. I live in the UK but I'm not English. If I was I would be proud of all the history, heritage and culture that the flag represents. If we cancelled celebrations (or protests) due to a minority of bad actors that try to smuggle in their extremist views in, we wouldn't have any celebrations or protests at all. All countries and their people should be able to celebrate the good in their history and culture. And just a reminder that all of human history is littered with evil deeds - England is not unique - all the more reason to remind ourselves to remain vigilant going forward to preserve how far we've come. Stand proud England, stand proud.

Narinder Kaur . . . begins by bashing UK, continues shouting and over-talking everyone else. She only sees things through her own history and culture. Being from an immigrant family she always has somewhere else she calls ‘home’. Usually India or Afghanistan, Pakistan etc. Immigrants always refer back to their own cultures as ‘home’. She seems to have no real knowledge of UK history & culture. Also London isn’t the centre of the World, plenty of towns and villages celebrate St George’s day all over England. To suggest its cultural erassure based on a contempory ideological disagreement with some who have choosen to fly it for the last 50 years seems uninformed to me although, I will concede that it is an opinion.

@@user-jd5eb6gk7c fair enough. And to be clear, I don't think it should be erased. I would love for it to be widely adopted and for that stain to be erased- I just don't know how. Because it's a myth that it's a very small minority. These days it's very strong symbolism attached to a very negative movement. You are correct about the history but most people don't know or care. It's hard to focus pride on events 600 years ago when the events of today are shoved in our faces every day. That's just human nature. There are many examples of flags that have become outdated. Such as the confederate flag in the US. Not saying it's exactly the same but the principle applies- in that It's heritage and history and how people viewed it many years ago does not in any way counteract the fact that these days it's used as a symbol of hate.

I was born in and have lived in UK for 50 years. In all that time I've never either had or been invited to a big St Georges celebration. There's never been a national holiday and nobody made a big deal. So how is it a "tradition"

@@hewmanbeing Are you sure now? Are you telling me the English celebrate St Georges Day like the Irish celebrate St Patrick's day? What did you do to celebrate last year? And you say it's culturally important? So what are the traditional ways you celebrate? What are these cultural traditions? I have no problem at all with being patriotic at all- I just think you know full well these celebrations were because of the Muslim marches. If not- send me some mass St Georges Day celebrations photos from down the years?

@@hewmanbeing you don't have ''to prove anything' and you don't have time to 'argue' with me- ? What you mean to say is you have no answers and have given up because you are wrong. You seemed to have time to argue before you realized you were wrong. This big 'St George's Day celebrations' happened as a result of the marches and were a Muslim protest. Nothing to do with St George. None of these St George conversations or flag conversations would be happening if it weren't for the recent pro Palestinian marches.

St George's Day is for ALL English, regardless of their colour. If you live in England, and intend to settle in England, you're English. Why can't English be proud of being English? I'd never tell the Irish, Scots or Welsh that they have no right to be proud of where they come from. I'd never tell someone celebrating Eid that they're wrong to do that. I accept that everyone has a right to be proud of who they are, while still valuing the richness of the diversity of our country. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
