@@Matt_Fields_29 a lot of them don't want to be full time refs since they make more by being lawyers in the off-season, my main source is Clete Blakeman, who leads a ref crew, and is a frequent guest on a morning show I listen to from time to time as he's friends with the hosts.

Honestly makes sense, because there's greater health and safety concerns for the population at large if your job isn't being done properly.

@@tiggerpete Yeah I don't know, it seems more of an excuse to keep workers from striking and limit their bargaining power. Like they're treating as if the workers don't know that their job is essential when they definitely know that better than those they would strike against.

@@Taylor-gb5gf This is a super common clause across union contracts. It's basically management saying they're buying labor peace for the life of the contract (usually 3 years) in exchange for all the other stuff in the contract. Once the contract expires, if they haven't negotiated a new one, the workers can strike. That's when most big strikes happen. However, the workers can also strike if management fails to uphold any element of the deal. And even when they're not "allowed" to strike, they still can. All that happens is the union gets fined. No one goes to jail. It's called a "wildcat strike," and when used strategically, can be very effective.

That only works in soccer because a soccer career is much longer and the sport is played in more countries. In American football, you only have so many years before your body can't take it anymore. And the system players go through to develop their talents is different than soccer, they don't have the college system like American football.

@@MrPiksovs Another big problem is that there is just no support for minor American football leagues. The only one that was remotely successful was the Arena League, and only because the game was so different. In England, for example, you have several tiers that are fairly stable.

​@@wvu05 football has way bigger rosters than every major sport with way bigger coaching and support staffs. Its EXPENSIVE to run a football team compared to a minor league baseball or g-league team.

@@YOSSARIAN313 Those teams are run by MLB and NBA teams. That also makes a huge difference. As far as how expensive it is, soccer in Europe isn't subsidized the way sports are here. For example, teams have to pay for their own stadiums.
