this is fantastic! abandoned places absolutely fascinate me for some reason, and I have a particular interest in Gunkanjima and Chernobyl. truly amazing that everything has just been left there. :]
It would be so great to be able to read the comments I get from Japan, but unfortunately none of my near friends can read it. But thank you for writing something here anyway! Thomas Nordanstad
Thanks for this video. I want to point out one minor error. When he says in subtitle that he came to island when he was 4 years old, in Japanese what he says translates to 'Grade 6', so he was 10-11 years old I assume.
I know a-lot about the island because I've been there before, I live in Nagasaki. Like a hundred years ago, the island was just a generic mining village to mine coal, but when the 1900s came along, the demand for coal rose to fuel factories and naval vessels during war. This gave people easy jobs, it was also one of the only islands near mainland where coal was mined, but, in the 60's coal ran out, and became useless due to japan's technological advancements, then, everyone just...left
Great documentary, the music goes perfectly with the scenes, amazing. Looks sort of sinister place, but at the same time a relaxing place to go at day time of course.
Yes you can visit Gunkanjima island via tour. The tour is in Japanese and has mainly Chinese tourists, but you take a ferry to the island where you circle it by boat (and can take photos, etc) and then you dock and walk around to three viewing points. You dont get to see the entire island by foot, since most of its closed off, but you do get 3 hours there to witness the ruins. They give you a manual in English and its u to you to follow along.
@@nordanstad aaa....I ... was not born ... yet ... in ... that year😐 and I just found out about this because my sister told me about the place 3 weeks ago..?lol😶
Myself and some friends of mine are into Urban Exploring. We like to go into old tunnelsystems, abanoned old factorys and such. This would probably be the dream place to explore around in. :) Just marvelous ^^
Great info. Thanks, didn´t know that. I saw images on the web, and the sculpture of Lenin seems to be one of the few remaining things there, right? I am always interested in new ideas, so do you think it can be worth a visit? All the best, Thomas
It was re-opened in 2009 for visitations. I intend to go in there. Looks like a japanese horror film scenario. A wonderful place, full of history and an evidence of how human being constructions can completely disappear as time goes by.
Pyramiden, one of four mining settlements on the Svalbard archipelago, was established in 1910 by Sweden and named after the pyramid-shaped mountain rising above it. Norway has sovereignty over the archipelago, but the Svalbard Treaty of 1920 ensures all signatory parties equal access to scientific and economic activities in the islands. fair enough.
Is it allowed to come to the island and stay all day? This can be a kind of ghost hunter location or seeing an apparition or a test of courage if there is a ghost hunter organization or association in Japan
to get there, I went to the INFORMATION DESK at Nagasaki train station and used my Japanese cell phone to call the boat tour company. They gave me an address (which the nice lady at the train station translated into Kanji) that I used for the taxi driver. He dropped us off right at the docking terminal and the tour ticket was about $40.
I think that your idea of the place is way more romantic that what it was in reality. I bet it was quite a dirty place with nothing special happening compared to any other industrial town. Still it's a very interesting place.
It´s hard nowadays, because they have more or less closed off the island, due to "renovation". They might open it up as a "museum", sadly... one where people will be seeing the island from new, ugly, walkways around the island. But nevertheless I don´t think it´s impossible to rent a boat in Nagasaki and go out there. But be prepared to run if the coast guard sees you! Thomas
Hey we in old good USA have towns like that too. The job moved out and the people live, its like after nuke war, haunted towns of nobody and no one, its creepy. TH
Hashima Island is a terrible island. It is a place where they forced Asians to work without giving them money or food.Japan now distorts its past and promotes it as an industrial island.Japan is now successful in distorting textbooks, so people don't know history. The German prime minister also pointed out Abe. Japan does not reflect on its past history and misses it.
it must be very depressive living in a place like this (especially for children).looking ay the pictures of this "ghost" island is depressive as well !
The history of the UK is very very SHAMEFUL indeed. I am not a hypocrite bc I don't deny or condone it. You feel ashamed about what your country did in your name, same here. But we are HUMANS, so we are brothers. The place of birth is just a different set of problems each of us has to face. Mind you I've attacked the US not the Americans in general ! HATE THE SIN, not the SINNER ! We should join forces against all this evil, instead of hating on each other.
