My grandmothers "secret family recipe" chocolate cake came out of a box. I'm glad I knew the secret because at her wake, it was one thing my aunt had mentioned that we'd never know her recipe... I said that I knew the secret - the room fell silent waiting to hear.. when I told them the packet mix story everyone burst out laughing and it completely lifted the mood. :).

It's an old bit Jimmy's been doing randomly during the winter holidays since his last show, Late Night, where he tells a story about how his 'grandma got run over by a reindeer' during last Christmas :))) (inspired by a song) ...it takes a while and he probably didn't have time to tell it, so he let Higgins' prompt slide. OR Jimmy wants to save it for Christmas-related Hashtags :)

@Justin Garcia No, we don't celebrate it. Most of us are making efforts at Reconciliation with our First Nations brothers and Sisters. You might want to touch base with Aboriginal Americans at Standing Rock ( and a whole lot of other places) before you play that card.

@Geoffrey Mendelssohn Yes...it's a different thing, North of the 49th. It's a celebration unto itself - not tied into the Christmas Season. In the U.S. It's like Thanksgiving is the BIG holiday, and Christmas is kind of an afterthought, and they don't have Boxing Day, so if Christmas falls at the start of the week, you're basically screwed. But they do have some awesome Thanksgiving food traditions - Green Bean Casserole...Yum.

Dad used to bring each uncle out to the back well room to “look at the load of firewood I put up” and they’d come back smiling warmly over their coffee cups. Occasionally over the fall and winter I’d go get wood for the stove and if I uncovered his bottle I’d just shove it back in between the next layer of wood.

That grandma's recipe story...years ago when I was making my first Thanksgiving dinner, I called my mom to see if she had my grandmother's recipe for gingerbread cake, my favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner growing up. She didn't, so she called Grandma to get the recipe. Turns out it was a Betty Crocker mix all those years...talk about shattering my illusions!

Every year my sister and I take a walk to go see my grandparents neighbors horse.. we are actually taking shots and fixing our drinks before we go back to join our lovely family 😂 (grandparents don't approve of alcohol but this is the only way to make the holidays bearable lol sorry grandparents! 🤷🏻‍♀️😂)

We live in Canada and have 18 members on my dads side and my grandma on my moms side come over for thanksgiving most years. This year, my aunt proceeded to spend the entire night talking to everyone in our kitchen while my mom cooked, cleaned, served food and washed dishes in front of her. My mom was pissed because she did so much work and my aunt didn’t do shit the entire night. She didn’t even bother to stop talking to deal with her arguing kids. We’re going over to her house for Christmas this year, and my mom told me she’s plotting to do the same thing to spite my aunt. I love my mama! Best part is, my aunt will complain, and being her stubborn self won’t even consider the fact that she does the exact same thing! Should be a fun Christmas dinner...

Our family has a chocolate chiffon pie we have made since the 40s. When my mom was a kid her parents were sick so she was in charge of making the pie that year since they couldn’t leave bed, and when it finished her brother refused to eat it because he said it looked like broccoli was in it. So now it is called broccoli pie and everyone eats the pie. While we eat it we talk about how many people we scared saying our family favorite pie is broccoli pie.

Our tradition is that we do something nontraditional. We started after my dad passed away in my 20's, and it felt like too much to just try and do everything the same when it wasn't. We've done different things like enchiladas, lasagna, and my favorite was this year when I was just too dang tired to cook- Chinese take-away:) Hey, I made the rice from scratch lol. I'm grateful that we have a small, quirky family that is flexible and just wants to get through the holidays without stress or drama.

My & a friend cut a tree down from a private car lot for another friends Mum. Had to climb over a big gate with a saw.... Then dragged it back to his house & put it in the living room. We were young teenagers at the time. 😄

Every year we switch up who's house is hosting Thanksgiving dinner, and each year, my sister plots to start a major argument. For example, one year we went to my Aunt and Uncle's house, and she instigated them into a huge fight over him procrastinating redoing the basement. You'd think my fam would've wised up by now, but no.
