This is my comprehensive review of the Hasselblad XCD 80mm f/1.9 shot on the Hasselblad X1D II. I explain the lens in detail, provide lots of sample images from a live shooting and look into autofocus performance.
I also share my first thoughts on the Hasselblad XCD 80mm vs the Fuji GF 80mm mounted on the Fuji GFX 100s.
In a related video in the next couple of weeks I will upload a competition shooting between the Hasselblad and Fuji medium format cameras with their respective 80mm lenses and provide a deep dive into similarities and differences of these two top-notch medium format camera-lens combos. The video will then compare image quality, dynamic range and autofocus speed.
If you want to support my channel, subscribe, share my videos and stay tuned.

HI there - as well as an H5D I am an H6D100c shooter primarily who has also invested into the 'X' system with an XCD50cII and a 907x for overhead shots on a crane (I shoot automotive) - I find myself using the 'X' system more than the H6/5D - this lens is on my 'to get next' list - I think I will now!! Thanks

I bought this Hasselblad 80mm lens, returned it because it’s really heavy and it rattles my hand when it focus, then I bought the 65mm f2.8 then returned it because I miss the beautiful image from 80mm f1.9. So I bought the 80mm again and it’s gonna stay. Yes, it’s the same weight as the new Sony 70-200 f2.8, my arm gets sore shooting it for hours and it’s heavy in bag go climbing., but it’s all worth it when I look at the images it produced.

@mathphotographer, great videos! could you also make a video on side by side comparison between XCD 80mm on X1D vs Noctilux 50mm on Leica M? Esp for low light and shallow depth of field. I am wondering what's the difference in image quality and what would justify the price difference.

Besten Dank für die detaillierte Präsentation. Ich teile Deine Meinung. Perfekte Detailzeichnung, traumhaft! Thank you for the detailed presentation. I share your opinion. Perfect detail drawing, fantastic! In the end, you have to find out for yourself how the autofocus interacts with your own expectations in daily use. I'm not a quick shooter, so I think the result is more important to me than having a lot of pictures. The weight of 1044 g? I don't want any other criticism, the pictures are wonderful in every detail.

curious to see the next episode. I guess that there will be no difference near the center and significant difference in far corners to the benefit of the Hasselblad. So please show us also corner rendering. And also Hasselblad developped in Phocus vs Fuji developped in Capture One (not both in Lightroom). Because Lightroom has inferior optical correction than Phocus.

Yes you are right but I put a dpmovie smart lidar motor on P lens which is mechanical but not lenses by wire, I have now the continuous autofocus, what do you think ? Should not Hasselblad come to such a good idea by developing such a lidar system on the actual Hasselblad cameras program ? Best regards (I'm a professional photographer for the swatchgroup)

It’s always been my opinion the Hasselblad has the more pleasing images. I think it still holds true. If I was to jump into MF it would be the Hasselblad. Not sure why people have obsessed with how Fuji has made MF smaller, while all along the Hasselblad has actually been the smallest, and still is, and it’s build quality, and interface is light years ahead of Fuji. I actually think because of the big sensors in MF, it’s the leaf shutters that are really required to achieve good images. Reflex shutters are just at a major disadvantage when exposing over a large sensor,moving from the center out achieves images that are superior. Only the S3 with CS lenses compares. The reason the Hasselblad lens weighs more is because it has lead in the glass, and adding lead to glass lenses in Japan is outlawed due to environmental laws, creating a major advantage to Hasselblad, it’s in the glass, coatings just can’t achieve the same effects on the light. It’s why Zeiss, Voigtländer, and Leica lenses are still the best, they still use lead in their lenses, and ship glass billets to Japan for the shaping and polishing for Japanese assembly at Cosina.
@jean-claudemuller3199
@jean-claudemuller3199 3 года назад
I don't think the weight comes from lead in the glass. The XCD 80 is full stuffed with glass. It's a matter of optical specification of the lens. If you are ready to cope with more weight you can use thicker (heavier) lenses that can obtain superior performance with glass brands that are easier to incorporate in the design. Making an ultra light high performance lens, require a lot of special glass that at the end has lower global image performance.
@williaminbody205
@williaminbody205 3 года назад
@@jean-claudemuller3199 pick up a drink glass, then pick up a lead crystal drinking glass, you’ll understand.....you’ll find 40% of the weight of that glass is lead.....
@ilcomendante
@ilcomendante 2 года назад
@@williaminbody205 I have given this a lot of thought, there is just something about the glass (microcontrast) which can't be explained by just the amount of it, having said that we know HB is not skimping on it as they prioritise quality over speed. In essence you're both correct (and our wallets equally emptied) 😉

It's a complicated questions XCD lenses are labelled made in Japan basic optical design made by Hasselblad Sweden detail optical design by Nittoh Japan shutter design and manufacturing by Hasselblad, shutters are sent to Nittoh lens manufacturing by Nittoh End Quality Control made by Hasselblad XCD 45P could perhaps be different, especially the shutter. (same shutter aperture systems for X and H lenses) X system parts made in china are clearly labelled as such for exemple: dual battery charger, release cord, XH adapter without optical system, manufacturing and finishing of these parts are without doubt up to other X system parts made in Sweden or Japan

Not my impression, I personally believe the GFX 100s body feels solid and rugged. It also does not feel cheap at all. But maybe there are differences in subjective perception here. For me the body is really good and feels like it will last very well even under rough shooting conditions.

100% agree with your comments @0:27. The 100s 80/1.7 combo delivers images of exceptional quality -- rendering & colors, not just the expected high level of detail and DR. I'm sure the XCD is also very nice (as former X1D owner). Too bad CO doesn't support Hassy (w/o hacking metadata). I think X1D is a great system in you're invested in Hassy ecosystem w/ their other cameras and all in on Phocus, but otherwise think GFX is a better overall system (IMO, of course). Still miss the compactness, build quality, and UX of the X1D though.

I have been into photography with cameras worth over a grand since 1980. Had thousands of cameras in my hands and compared pictures perhaps un-rivaled by most in the field. For a brief time I was even the No1 Fuji dealer of Switzerland thanks to some schools as good clients. Seeing the digital transition thru my hands. The brand Hasselblad has more of a cult status in today's world. Now taking photos is a matter of freezing memories to re-live emotions or to preserve highest details for technical reasons. I shoot real estate with some Nikon's but only because clients brains had been conditioned to accept the industry standard.(Matterport is precision but only suitable for clean Swiss houses as it reveals specs of dust) I have shared time in distant zoo's with freaks that have mortgaged their house to go all Hasselblad. At the end yes you need glass for sports, artistic talent for portraits and reliable gear in safaris. Post processing does amazing things but what creates most joy? Sad to see the Iphone 12 is probably the overall winner of eyebrow raising content. NowadaysI personally take most shots on the S21Ultra for convenience but still love to rework Nikon shots only to find my Canon mates have a head start.. The Oneplus company needs to get deeper into bed with Hasselblad to impress the point and shoot enthusiast!

GFX100 is a totally different camera due to a totally different sensor type which is able to a fast AF. The X1D sensor is the same that on the GFX50 and one nows that eye detect on GFX50 works poorly, that's why Hasselblad never implemented it.
