The Hasselblad X1D II and the Fujifilm GFX100S are very different cameras in terms of design and what's inside of them. However, what they do have in common is that they both have 80mm medium format lenses.
The Hasselblad XCD 80mm f1.9 is one of the fastest lenses among medium format modern lenses until Fujifilm came out with their 80mm f1.7 lens. So which of the two is the better medium format camera lens?

For me, the rendition and colors of Hasselblad is so much better! Tbh I wasn't expecting such a significant difference between the systems, I am quite shocked. Thank you for sharing this video and comparing these lenses/systems.

Nice! I've been using the Hasselblad X1D II system and this particular lens (along with the 65mm and 45mm P) and I think you've captured it all here. The beautiful focus fall-off looks like the best Leica Sumicron or Sumilux lenses, almost complete freedom from any aberrations, yet delivering resolution that is for all practical purposes as good as the Fuji. (Yes, the X1D system could benefit from a faster auto focus system). The color rendition of the Hasselblad RAW files straight out of camera in either Lightroom or Phocus is unrivaled. It looks to me like a magical version of a Kodak Portra film, enhanced by having far more dynamic range than even Portra 400. Thanks for the video!

Great review. This is a very meaningful video that once again shows that spec sheets only tell half the story. I’m a fashion/make-up portrait photographer based in Switzerland and in the studio I use the H6D. I’ve had little shooting experience with the X1D and its glass, but I immediatly noticed the resemblance with my H6D-100. We’ve had the GFX100 here for a while and lately the GFX100S. While both cameras are great for product shoots and landscapes, they fall a bit short for portraits and fashion. The main issue is a very persistent magenta to greenish color cast on skintones. It varies based on color temp and is time consuming to correct in post. For me it’s a Fuji hallmark. The X-cameras have a similar problem. Fuji is often praised for great color science and while that is true for their jpeg engine, the raw files are rather problematic as soon as skin tones (all skin tones except very dark ones) are involved. We also noted the other issue you highlight: the Hasselblad images look more natural 3D and the GFX100 images are more clinical and look a bit overprocessed with a strange 3D effect that seems artificial. So, for me I stick to my H6D and my partner to her IQ4. Some things cannot be captured in spec sheets…

Thanks for watching and also sharing your experiences. I was having this discussion on the GFX Facebook group and there was a decent amount of pushback. It takes someone like your self to use both systems to see it. Now my wish is Hasselblad improves the AF, battery life and maybe IBIS to give us the great experience Fujifilm has done with the GFX100 and S

@@TECH360TV haha, the Fuji fanboys are indeed one of the most defensive fans I know of ;-). Yet, already in the days of film, Fuji was known for its green/magenta cast with many of their film emulsions. I’ve used the X-system extensively for personal work. I love the X-Pro2 with the smaller primes, but as soon as significant portrait work was involved I pick up another camera. I share your wishes for Hasselblad, but traditionally they move slow and deliberate. That makes it not exactly an everyman’s friend, but a specialized tool. With the GFX cameras (cropped) medium format has undergone a huge boost in sales. Yet, I already notice amateurs moving back to fullframe, which for 99% of the users is still a better balance between image quality, cost, size/weight (esp. of the lenses) and performance.

@@jacobh5817 If you are having a problem with Fuji raw files it is your problem not the camera. Fujifilm has one of the best skin tones. I have been using this camera for my editorial works for a long time. If you want to see artificial just check Hasselblad skin tones. They have sick yellowish tonality especially indoor lighting. You can easily remove magenta in post process but you can not remove yellow sick looking tonality easily because it is harder to do it. lastly this video is BlASED because the lighting and background are not the same for the portrait shots and he is not using correct film simulation for portrait shots.

Leica beautiful but stylized in that it rendering reds and green in a pleasant but exaggerated way that many love. The Hasselblad and GFX render more close to life and with raw all can be matched to each other either way. When people speak of what is "better", they really should say what they like out of camera.

I’m going with Fuji on this one just because I could get the GF 80 & 110 for the price of the Hass 80 1.9! I like cameras though and the Hass looks slick. Thanks to Fuji for the competition and helping them lower their MF body prices a tad. I do enjoy the autofocus on the 100S, and without the faster AF motor, the 80 is still good in decent lighting conditions and very enjoyable. Very enjoyable comparison!

Same here, as much as I like the X1D for the form factor and design snd leafshutter, the price difference is too significant to ignore it. And nnot to forget that the electronic shutter is no good for adapting 3rd party lenses, No Paf, worse battery life, and slow processing. Put these cams side by side and 99% will pick up the X1D, same as me, until you know what is the difference inside.

Nice work, both great cameras though after using both for a while ended up with the Fuji 100s for its image quality and flexibility. Fuji 80mm not my favourite lens as I tend toward 110mm fuji. Your comparisons are a bit off for both making this video a bit suspect though entertaining. As I only shoot raw uncompressed the profiles don't have any significance to me. If people are only outputting to a monitor or Instagram then even sony nikon or canon (or phone) would be less of a waste of money these days. As you have said. People need to use the cameras and make the decision based on the output and reliability they want. Can you afford to miss shots or focus as on will your subject fly back to you if you didn't capture the right material? Are you blowing up your images 6ft by 8 ft? Or straight to the gram? In the end of the day, the client wins.

I’m missing the comparison of resolutions. The only photo (turtle) on which one could see the advantage of the 100 MP is the Hassi photo not in focus. BTW Hasselblad raws are much better in Phocus than LR.

Yes Phocus is better for Hassy and C1 is better for Fujifilm so I thought the most neutral is LR.

You told us to show same photos from 2 cameras but you actually started to showing “different light, different scene” photos in the begining of the video and called Hasselblad has better 3D pop , better colors. Firstly don’t get me wrong and no offense but maybe you need to change your WB and Film simulation correctly for the Fuji files my friend. I have been shooting fashion editorials and I have never get such a skin tones with my Fuji for portraits. Also you said Hasselblad has better colors but if you check “ Diamante SV” photo , you can see how bad the original file and it is no way close to “Natural Color”. I agree with you about Hasselblad has beautiful colors but sometimes it shows too yellowish tonality and makes the skin tones look like “sick” I think both lenses are amazing as you said. Hasselblad can be a little bit better in some way because it is way heavier and pricey lens. Seems like it has more elements then Fuji. Fujifilm wanted to create character with that lens and I think they did. I wish Hasselblad lens can be cheaper. If I buy Hasselblad X system one day , I will definitely buy that lens. Thanks

Thanks for watching. I stated there was a lighting change. Happens with our weather here. I acknowledged that from the beginning when I showed both images lighting changed. Yes overall I found the Hasselblad to have more pop vs the Fujifilm. I know others will disagree with me which is fine. It’s all open to interpretation. Both cameras are set to AWB. Yes you can of course adjust WB for both cameras based on the scene and I also demonstrated one can adjust the Fujifilm colors. I also shoot fashion work and if I’m only using one camera you can’t tell. If you put two cameras next to each other color differences show. I also did this test with multiple people that shoot Fujifilm professionally and they all agreed with my findings and also said like I did colors can be adjusted in post. How can you tell the colors we’re natural or not if you weren’t in the shop with me taking the photo? As I said lighting in some shops isn’t optimal for photography and thus need to be corrected. Overall both produce fantastic IQ. As mentioned in this review it’s spitting hairs. For me I prefer the flexibility in the fujifilm system currently, but like Hasselblads colors and lens quality. It’s really a matter of preference and there is no right or wrong answer. It’s just a fun video showing what these two lenses and cameras produce.
@GKhanKutar

@@TECH360TV For the bicycle photo , I wanted to tell you that the unedited file of Hasselblad was too yellowish and it did not look good in terms of wb and colors. For the portrait shots , especially indoors , Hasselblad gives sick looking yellowish tonality for the skin tones in my experience. Hasselblad has never made a lens. They always work with other companies. If you check XCD 45mm F3.5 vs GF 45mm F2.8 , you will see Fuji is much better. If you check XCD 90mm F3.5 vs 110mm F2 GF , you will see 110 is better. “Being better“ depends on the lens rather than company name for these 2 IMO. Which film simulation did you use for portrait shot for Fujifilm ? Pro Negative High , Pro Negative Standart or even Classic Negative will give you better colors for the skin tones.
@TECH360TV
@TECH360TV 3 года назад
I normally use Pro Negative High for Portraits as it does improve skin tones. As for the comparison of other lenses, that’s not what this video is about. I have already commented on how much I love the 110 in various other reviews. It’s their standout lens and one of the best portrait lenses out IMO. As for the other lenses, I haven’t compared, but I can say most of the Hasselblad lenses perform very well and so do Fujifilm. Some better than others like all systems. I have not found the sick looking colors for skin tones that you have mentioned. If anything I found them to be more accurate than other systems. If I was to compare I would say they resemble Nikon prob more than anything else

I'm with you on Hasselblad colors. I tried to gather raw files from different review sites and don't get all the fuss about Hasselblad colors. Yes, the files do look very nice sometimes but I too notice the yellow/greenish tonality on skin tones which look horrendous. This is what Sony has been criticized for years for its unpleasant yellowish skin tones.

Hasselblad costs almost twice as Fujifilm and weights about the same as the new Sony 70-200 f2.8. The lens is loud and rattles in hand when I focus. However, the magic from this beast is the images you get. So call me a snob, I’m sticking with Hasselblad.

A fun job and fun to watch. I'm of the thought that the IQ is 50/50 lens/camera body. On that score, Hasselblad has nice skin tones out of camera but GFX 100s has numerous film simulation that puts it apart from the rest.
