Wow Hugh. How true. We all end up on the platform, so often somewhere we didn’t expect to be, blindsided on some idle Tuesday afternoon (as ‘Sunscreen’ told us it would). Capturing that moment in an astonishing image, with as personal a meaning as it is possible to have, forever connecting you with the moment, the location, and the camera in an indivisible bond that defines the difference between a snap and a photograph - an unique window into our own life. Definitely nitpicking, but I believe both Fuji and Rodenstock/Phase One provide MTF charts at 40 lp/mm, and Rodenstock even provides it at 80!

Well, Hugh, this review stands out - it really does , but in a way that it is less emotional and more formal . Although all forms and sorts of review “etiquette” is present , it is really different from all your other reviews . I do also understand that real reasons cannot be posted here in text , for various reasons. But shall I see you are “blinking twice” behind the curtain :) and confirms my feelings.

Great review, and at the end, I thought you were talking about my father’s passing. Could you please answer a question? I have heard in other reviews that the 90MM 2.5 is “noisier” than the 2 other new 2.5 lenses. Has this been your experience, or could these be just be production issues??

Excellent and touching video. My heart resonates with your loss and I feel for you as you recover from a parent’s loss. As someone who has been drooling over the X1+2D system, and not wanting to review all of your videos on the Hasse system at the moment, I would find it helpful to have a list of the best lenses for the X2D. Which ones can’t I live without in terms of image quality should I invest in the system and which ones can I wait on?

Going on a whim here but I have the x2d and paired it with the otus 85 1.4 (w/xcd adapter) although it’s manual focus I use focus peaking, I’m just wondering as far as image quality if it would in comparison to the 90v, render more of a native mf hassy look than the zeiss. And that’s besides the af leaf shutter benefits. It be hard to discern the differences since both lenses are not compared, but my guess would be that the 90v would give a more buttery smoother look with more hassy accurate colors than the otus. My rhetorical statement here thinking you’ve worked with otus lenses before 🙏

I haven’t worked with Otus lenses in years (if memory serves, it was just one lens and I don’t remember which one now), so I really couldn’t say, sorry!

Hugh, Love the last few minutes. I think you captured what I feel photography is really all about. Can you convey to the viewer the emotion you felt at the time? Photography (for me) is creating the image which speaks spirit to spirit. Sometimes that requires speed, features, etc. As I grow older - it requires lightweight, relatively compact gear that can be with me frequently. Ideally, that ggear has a simple menu, reasonably quick and accurate auto focus (old eyes) and beautiful colors. I am finding the X2D and a few V lenses meet those criteria. Thank-you for your wonderful videos.

Amazing content, super inspiring and your channel helped me pick up my first Leica which I love. Wondering if you've ever come across some play between the X2D lens mount and the lenses themselves. Have seen a few reviewers talk about their lenses having a small amount of wiggle. Small, but still concerning on a camera body like the X2D

Thanks Hugh -- I wait to watch your review of the new Firmware 3.10 for the X2D and Phocus 3.7.6 for Mac -- this has brought a version of Face Tracking AF to the X2D -- "a version" because unlike continuous AF servo style one has to life and press the finger on the shutter button to grab focus and it is more of an AF-S than AF-0C after that -- so less good for moving shooters/subjects. Karl T posted a vid indicating that H was working on this. I confirmed that the new AF tracking works with my older XCD lenses 1.8/80 and 4/21 not just the latest "V" lenses. Perhaps when H provides genuine "continuous" AF servo the new lenses will be the ones this works best on. But for now both Tracking and Live View for tethered shooting are long awaited and so I am overjoyed they have just landed.

Thank you for this review Hugh. Four months ago, when you did your X2D 10 months on review, I asked you 'on the new f/2.5 lenses, with manual focus clutch engaged, did you find manual focus quick (close to M lens on SL), or hard to do quickly because of lag / variable response?', and you replied, 'close enough, sometimes…', and then 'Manual focus does NOT feel like mechanical focus, but the degree to which that matters is a personal preference. 😊🖖🏻'. That was with the 38/2.5V and 55/2.5V were available. In this, review of the 90/2.5V, you discuss manual focus, but don't address this point specifically. Overall you seem much more positive about the 90/2.5V or perhaps the system generally (was it the magic of the platform shot?). Are you feeling different about the system now? Did you feel the manual focus frustration with the 90/2.5V that you did with the 38 and 55 V lenses? Or are you simply gelling with it more this time around?

You’re right about how one image can - and has (for me) in the past - make one reconsider a piece of gear. With the face detect upgrade, I am simply less inclined to focus manually, and I think the 90 optically superior to the 38 and 55, although I did like both in the real world.

90mm on baby-MF is truly a difficult field of view to compare to on full frame. 85mm is the closest though a different beast in itself. Curious how the Nikon 85mm f/1.2 would stack up next to the 90V-though again big differences in both resolution, FL, DOF, and size. 🤔

Hello Hug, Just to say as some one who has both the X1D and X2D cameras with a number of the XCD lense (none of the new V) on the X2D this new firmware dose seem to make the camera a bit quicker. The new update and fixes just make the camera even better. I do love the Hassleblad X system

Thanks for that Hugh. I've had the SL APO 75mm f2 and wasn't quite as impressed with its rendering and sharpness on the SL2 as some reviewers have been. The sharpest lens I have ever owned is still the Canon EF 300mm f2.8ii L, even when matched with the modest resolution of the 1DX mark ii. The SL APO 90mm f2 might have come closer to the Hassy but, as you say, on the SL2 the performance won't reach that of the Hassy lens and MF digital sensor. I'll be in France all of next year. I'll check out your dates for the Paris workshop. Cheers from Oz.

Hugh, another amazing video. Hopefully I’ll join one of your Street workshops soon. I love Hassies but when I made a recent upgrade decide against the move to the system for all the reasons you listed. The primary pain point for me was autofocus. While Hasselblad may not wish to hear this they really need to focus on autofocus. IMHO Hasselblad should just reach out to Sony and license their new AI autofocus technology. I have it with my A7R5 and it’s simply amazing.
