Watching this brings a tear to my eyes. My family used to go camping there back when I was a kid back in 2000. I remember swimming and fishing there in the summer time. After the family divorced I haven't been there since then. I love that place brings back so many childhood memories of my family there. Swimming with my brothers there and fishing with dad.

So glad my video brought back those memories! Such a beautiful area and peaceful stream.

Lower Hat is such a pleasure to fish, I’ve spent many days there. Mostly smaller fish, but one day maybe my 5th time there I hooked into and landed/released a 22” rainbow, kinda a Fall River sized beast. It was a religious experience 👍🏻

Great job on the large rainbow. Getting a large fish on Hat Creek is very tough to do. I did see a couple of large fish from a cliffside but they were nearly impossible to get to in the deep water along the cliff (smart fish!).

That upper section sure is beautiful. Its great to see you out there fishing and explore lots of different water.

Would be a plus if you showed fly selection that you are using

The riffle section fishes best in the morning and afternoon, it’s really hard to land fish there in the day from what I’ve experienced.

Thanks for the info. That riffle gets a ton of pressure and the fish are pretty wise.

That last fish didn't even know he was hooked for a moment :D It would appear your experience there was similar to mine from a couple weeks ago.

Yes--I saw your video on Hat Creek and our experiences were very similar. Mainly small fish though I did see some large fish from a distance feeding but they seemed to be the exception. There was a lot of people fishing but no one was catching anything.

@@purpledrakefishing I'm guessing it's the easy wading and the creek's legendary reputation that brings all the people. Less so the bigger fish.

@@driftstone I have read that it was once one of the best spring creeks in the west with great hatches. Hopefully it can make a comeback--I don't see why not.

Any pointers? Heading there the 25th-28th of this month

Don't get discouraged at first if you don't see any fish in the crystal clear water. They can really hide well in the underwater cress. You can look at a stretch of water that seems devoid of fish, only to have an insect hatch make it come alive with rising fish. Also, the fish are extremely spooky and will need to be fished to well below them or above them with a downstream drift. The Powerhouse Riffle gets hammered that it makes for difficult fishing and I would avoid and concentrate the water below it.

Super tough area. I did well swinging soft hackles in the lower section.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 3 года назад
That's a great idea to swing wets--will give that a try next time on Hat Creek. Those fish see so many dries in the season and they are tough to fool on top.

Are you allowed to keep them there
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 3 года назад
Upper Hat Creek is stocked heavily and you can keep fish there. The lower, below Powerhouse #2 is managed as wild trout special regulations and catch and release only.
