I'm pretty new to sewing, but love to make things and this was my first real project. I was able to use the wonderful pattern and video to make this hat over the weekend! It's pretty special to me; both of my parents are gone now, but I used an old pair of my dad's jeans and some of my mom's fabric for the lining, plus I used her old machine. As a bonus, I stitched a "hidden" pocket into the top lining to store cash or credit cards. Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing this story. You have really made my day. I still have some of my dad's shirts and now I am going to make a cap for my brother. Love this story! Tori.
Check those printer settings to make sure the measuring lines are correct and have fun!! If you need any help, just reply and I will respond quickly. Thanks for watching and happy sewing! Tori
@@madcaphatsso I had to get my sewing machine fixed & I am to the part where you sew the visor on and I get match the center front, but is there some specific place on the side where you are supposed to get to or just let it end where it ends. I also couldn’t see in the video how you handle the end of the visor. If you just sew along the edge you will have this little blip where the visor ends or you could sew it into a point with the outer edge which seems like it might be smoother. I really don’t want to do this seam wrong & then pick it out so please advise. Thank you.
Tori
This is so charming - have been looking for something to make my famously indecisive Father for Christmas this year, and I know he would love this hat! He's going to love it
Made this for my husband out of an old shirt for my first one, just forgot to mirror the side panel and had to recut it. Turned out great and he loves it. Next one will be made from a lovely piece of Harris tweed! Thanks for a great pattern!
Thanks for the great pattern and inspiring video! I can't wait to get started on this project and have just woven my own herringbone tweed for it. Love the design!
Wow that is incredible!!! You are amazing! I would have loved to have had the time to make my own fabric and then the hat but was always so busy with everything else running my business. I am so happy that you found our page and would love to see a picture when you are done!! Thanks so much for this comment, Tori
Thanks for the video. I have recently found myself intrigued with sewing and trying more ambitious things. I have made some bucket hats, welding caps (which I will use because I also love welding) and some tulip hats. I have watched this tutorial a few times now and will attempt to make one of these today. I hope my machine can get through that many layers, lol.
Thank you for this informative video, sharing your experience and knowledge and free pattern! I am in a process of sewing one flat cap for my teenage son and I keep coming back to your video for construction process. Many thanks 😊 it is finished and my son loves it- pale green linen mix fabric with puppy print cotton lining for some fun
@@madcaphats I couldn't stop so I made a few flat caps for myself and a few for elderly friend that admired my son's hat ( he wears it everyday!) Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this wonderful pattern and clear guidance. I have just finished hats for my brother and niece. I modified the way the peak was done because I was using old plastic folder dividers and it worked fine. Much appreciated!
Thanks so much for this video. I love flat caps but I can never find the perfect one for me. Now I can actually make the perfect one for me! I’ve only ever hand stitched repair work and maybe a hem or two. So i’ve still gotta learn sewing machine. Hopefully it looks like a hat when i’m done.
Well, I've made a few flat caps from this pattern or one very similar to it. I can't remember where I found the download so I'm not sure if it is truly the same pattern. I hadn't much experience sewing but managed to do a decent job of it based on the tutorial that came with the pattern, but after watching this video I have learned a few tips that will make my next cap much easier. Thanks.
Thank you. Made one yesterday morning & I’m really happy with it! I’m going to give it too my son for his birthday. Would send a photo but didn’t know how to attach.
Thank you sooo much! I've just made it for myself, it's a bit big for me, but for the first cap it's quite nice! Next time I'm just going to make it smaller.
Love this pattern, Although I find the sizes to be a wee bit on the larger side. I made my own bias tape to create the swear band and it turned out great.
Thank you for sharing your creation - I have some lovely fine wool fabric that I bought years ago from a woollen mill that will be lovely once I make them up. ❤
I just discovered that you're Canadian (yay), and went to George Brown, one of my old colleges, and live in the same county I used to live. I guess that merits me buying a pattern from you
So the hat I made for my dad was too big. My husband has a big head and I gave it to my husband and he was so happy with it. It's his going out hat. I made is with old denim jeans and it looks great. Today I'm making a smaller one for my dad and it's so darn cute!! I will surprise him this week because I could see he was so disappointed that the other one was too big for him. He will be thrilled. Thank you so much again.
I loved your video, it's the best I've ever seen. I had already started doing it a while ago, but now I learned a lot from you. I spent the night making one out of jeans, and it turned out really nice. Thanks.
The fastest way is to buy the very moderately priced full pattern set with full pattern pieces in a few sizes. If you have a head that requires grading, we do customize patterns for customers as well if you can provide head measurements. Cheers, Tori
I have purchase the templates. much appreciate this. sometimes it is very difficult to tell someone's head size. their face maybe oval or thin, so it can be deceiving. also sometimes people simple like to wear bigger hats. I have one aunt who likes large even though her head is really medium. everyine has their perferences.
@@cathrung9220 Very true! The sizing on this pattern is meant to be slightly loose rather than tight. You can add a small length of elastic at the back, inside the sweatband to tighten fit
Best video for these Caps. New to sewing but I’m ready to take on making this cap. I wear these all the time and I’m so excited to make some out of all kinds of material! Lol thank you so much. I was stuck about visor material, but not anymore. If you have any tips for me, please let me know. I love the seam magnet that you use I kind of like the fact of having some elastic in the back just for tighter fit. What do you think? And could you maybe show me how to put it in? Please and thank you God bless love your videos.
Thank you Andrew for your lovely comment. I have a new cap video that shows how to add elastic in the lining of a different cap but that is where you would put some elastic, in the lining on the wrong side of the lining. You can see the elastic bit at around the 17:40 minute mark. The new video is here ...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8hSmDlMH2ms.html Some sewers have cut up the 2 litre size pop bottles to make visors. Just use two layers of a sturdy sew in interfacing if you can't get what I use in the video! Keep me posted! Tori
Bought the deluxe pattern and ready to try this. Two questions, though. First - do you wash your fabrics before sewing your hats? Second, I think I would prefer to sew the cap down to the brim but I am not sure how you did that. Are you able to clarify? Thanks for the video and pattern!
@@Oldthumbs Yes wash and steam iron your fabric if the fabric is washable and can be ironed. You sew the edge of the top of the visor to the bottom edge of the top ...the part that would be pulled down by the snap. Do this part by hand working from one side of the visor to the other. I would try my safety pin method first however to see if you like that. Cheers and thank you, Tori
I will be doing a wider version as well as a panelled top version like the Peaky Blinders show caps. Thanks so much for your feedback and stay tuned!! Tori
There is a full pattern available is different sizes on our website. You can check out the pattern here ...madcaphats.com/pages/classic-flat-cap-pattern
I was just gifted my first sewing machine, I purchasd this pattern and I cannot wait to learn how to make this hat. Thank you a ton for the detailed pattern and accompanying video, I'm excited to give 'er a go!
So exciting!!! Take your time and the second one will be a breeze. You are learning a new machine and a new pattern so hopefully all will be smooth sailing. Make sure you check the measuring line on the pattern to make sure the printer printed it the size I want you to have! If you have questions please reach out! Thanks so much for watching and purchasing!! Tori
@@madcaphats I checked the measuring line and it's 10cm on the dot! My printer weirded out and printed the pattern at A4 size despite having Letter sized paper, but it still seems to have worked out. I've got everything taped up and ready to be cut out. Thanks for the response, if I have any trouble I'll definitely send ye an email! B)
You can try setting your printer to increase the size of the pattern but likely that is be difficult going up since the outline box is part of the pattern sizing and increasing the size of the output may put that box off the page. You might consider investing in the paid pattern, links in the video description, as it does have the size 24.5 as well as other sizes and full size pieces!! Cheers, Tori
Thank's for the video and pattern. Did you make any of these with a foldable ear-flap? Any tips to make it fit and make a tight edge around the ears in winter?
No, I have never added Earflaps on this pattern. I knpw the Tilley Company has a finished cap with earflaps but they sell ready made hats rather than patterns. Could be there is a pattern out there for one with flaps, check on Etsy! All the best, Tori
We could never keep these in stock. Demand is high for this one. Would make an excellent business for someone looking for a sewing business idea!! Thanks Jacky, let me know if you have any questions once you get started.
@@willbelieverable There is a link in the video description for both the free and the paid version of the pattern. The shop shelf under the video has a link to your website for the paid version as well! Both are on our website www.madcaphats.com
You've got this Simon!! The printer settings are the hardest part if you are a sewer. Any problems have always been about printing. Make sure your settings are at Actual or Custom 100 percent! Never fit to page. Please send me a picture when you are done. I would love to see your new hat! Tori
Thank you so much for this pattern. I measured my head and it is exactly 22.5" so I made the medium size. The hat turned out beautifully but sits on the top of my head. Almost like it is made for a small child. I will try the XL size and see if that works. I would be interested if anyone else experienced this.
It sounds like your printer is not set to print the pattern at "Actual Size" or Custom 100%. When a pattern is too small it is always the printer or possibly your seam allowance is larger than the pattern requires? Most printers have a fit to page setting. You want to change that. Did you check the measuring line on your pattern? If you did and it is correct then it is your seam allowance. 1000s of people have successfully made this hat! I get their pictures all the time! You can email me at madcaphats@gmail.com and we can go through your printer settings and how to choose Actual size or custom size 109% from your printer menu.
We need to see more woman wearing these adorable hats! I want one, went looking for woman’s hat couldn’t find when I stumbled across your video. I sew so I can make one. Then I will tackle weaving my own material for one. Thx SO MUCH.@@madcaphats
I'm not is good for manufacturing, but i dream from more time have an artigial flat cap, i've very passion for this style of cap. Yours cap is very beatifull, can i buy one and what costs?
Hi Roberto .... thanks for your comment! I find that my family snaps up all of these caps that I make as I am starting to prepare to retire from sewing inventory. After 36 years, it is time to work on my design and pattern making for a couple of years rather than selling finished hats. Likely someone who will be making these for their own business may see this comment and respond to your request. Hopefully someone will introduce themself to you here and sell you a cap!! Tori.
Hello! I'm a bit new to sewing. I tired following the free template but my band and the top aren't the same length is that how it's supposed to be? When I line up the seem with the notch the back corner of the band can't reach the back corner of the top when I lay them out, is that how it's supposed to be?
This one is quite easy to make once you have one done. I made a big pile of them for hubby and now my son and grandson want more of them too!! I think all of them will be getting some for Christmas. Tori
This comment is purely for curiosity's sake, no insult intended. I love this cap style, I've been making them for about a year now and they are all based on a generic flat cap pattern that can be had anywhere. They look just like yours and other makers, but I can sell mine whenever and wherever I please. So many youtubers are creating hats and saying not for commercial use because it's their pattern or creation. My question is: What makes your cap any different than any other flat cap. When compared to other patterns, yours are identical in every way. If the patterns are the same from one maker to the next, how could anyone say I stole their pattern, and I can't sell the hats commercially? Doesn't make sense to me. Unless the hat has been clearly altered to add extra pieces or the shape has changed drastically,, nobody can claim a flat cap or newsboy cap, or any other as theirs. Thanks, love the video and like I said, I mean no offense at all, I'm just curious.
No offense! You will find that hats and caps that stand the test of time are usually the same shape no matter who the maker. Apply that to ball caps, fedoras and of course large brimmed sun hats. I do not restrict use of my patterns and if you are planning to use your skills to make hats for income that is awesome. It is good to understand small nuances that make a hat flattering so I really recommend you experiment to make any changes to any pattern. That is the fun of learning and creativity. I am only here to share my work as I am a trained hat designer and am soon retiring after 37 years! I really can't say what is different about my pattern except for the little extra piece I add above the main visor that in my experience has made the cap better I think!! Happy sewing! Tori
@@is_what_it_is Thank you! Also I will add to my answer if you don't mind ... I have always designed for comfort and fit and in the case of public patterns, the ability to sew at home without expensive equipment like I have in my studio workshop is part of the process at my end right now. Any hats on our RU-vid channel have been reworked so that home sewers can make them. Some require more sewing skill than others but little things like giving you a few options to close the visor at the front, replacing the snap with a well placed pin or sewing it down, are part of the pattern and video for this hat. Hope that helps and please come back and check out some of my other hats as I continue to digitize my patterns and release more hat school lessons! Tori
Did Peltex change their name for 9290 flexifirm? I cannot find this anywhere on their website. I can find HTC retail's 9290 flexifirm at one online location, but I prefer to try my local fabric store that carries pellon products.
It is sold in Canada under that code but I think they must call it something else in the USA. You can get it in Canada at Fabricland. There is a similar stiff sew in interfacing available from Thermo Web. I will check the code when I am in my studio today and add it to this comment.
@@madcaphats thanks I appreciate it. I did try one type of peltex in my first caps (I can't recall which) but I didn't like how I could not shape it to retain a curve. I ended up using bills from old ball caps instead. They are harder to trim to the correct shape smoothly though, and my wife doesn't like the look of the untrimmed bills (I do though). I may experiment a bit with wonderflex' fossshape 300 and 600 as well, but I sure whish I knew where to source uncut thermoplastic used for ball caps. That can be easily cut with a laminate trimming router and a hardboard template...
Yes of course! IF you have a metal plate over your feeding teeth, really consider getting yourslef a larger size magnet and then you can rest the fabric against it while you stop and start for putting the visor on and the sweatband in. Before I got my larger magnet, the one I use in my videos, I used two smaller ones lined up back to back and that works great too. Any of my patterns will work on a regular sewing machine Elizabeth. I use my industrial because that is what I am used to working on.
Thank you so much for the free pattern and great video tutorial!I’m going to make one as an anniversary present 😃 Only question I have is how much fabric do I need to get? 1/2m of each? TIA ☺️
I thank you for your video’s. I have successfully made several with no problem. But on this one the part about the band was very confusing. In the beginning of the video it looked like you sewed the band together at the seems. When you went to attach it to the lining top it looked like it wasn’t sewn together? I’m confused
The part of the hat that wrap around the head, the band, has an outside piece and a lining and in both cases there are two pieces that the same but sewn together at the center front. At the 10 minute mark I start to assemble the top and the band together ... they are not your usual hat shapes so I think you may be looking at the back of the cap which will have some darts and getting a bit confused by that. The pinning together starts at a back corner of the top, on the wide curved part of the band and you wrap the piece around joining the center seam of the band with a notch in the center of the top at the front. Hope that helps!!! Tori
Thank you so much for responding. I will absolutely continue to follow you because your hat videos are great . I appreciate you for all you teach us but I’m going to pass on this one
I’m thinking about purchasing this pattern, but can’t seem to find how much fabric is required. Can anyone advise? I’d like to know how much I’m going to spend on fabric before I purchase it.
I'm having a problem with the visor matching up with the band. There is about an inch difference, the band being wider. If I sew the visor at the edge of the band, the brim will be under the front of the cap - not sticking out forward from underneath. I only printed large and extra large and I am making the large. I've checked the visor as it is sewn and it matches the size of the stabilizer piece. What can I do at this point?
It is always a challenge to teach a hat pattern from scratch via video but hopefully you can skip ahead with the chapter feature of RU-vid!! Will check to see if this video has the chapters generated and if not will work on adding them. Thanks so much for watching and for your comment, Tori
Any advice on a patter or is it even possible. Im looking for a hat like this except where the fabric goes directly over the bill part with no flap part. Id like to have one out of waxed canvas that i can wear in the woodshop. The reason for the absence of the flap is i dont want places dust can accumulate. Any ideas on a pattern or how to modify it?
I would search Etsy for a Flap Cap Pattern that will match what you are looking for. Sorry, I have no designers to offer. I know that is a modern cap you are looking for so maybe add the word modern flap cap in your search. Good luck!
You can use a light or medium weight one side fusible on the pieces ... depending on the weight of the body fabric. In the video I made one of the caps from my hubby's old cotton plaid shirt and I use as a medium weight fusible interfacing on the pieces. Check it out at the 1:20 mark in the video!! Thanks for watching! Tori
@@mandyhasler4802 I think i was a bit ahead ... looks like i mention it at the 0.57 sec mark ... i just mention it in passing when I am showing the shirt I cut up.
Okay. Just got it. LOL Think I skipped past that bit - keen to get to the construction details. My impatient self. You’ll be staggered to hear I paid an eye-watering whopping $A250 for a leather version from a New Zealand Hat Co last year for partner’s birthday. Kicking myself now when I see how easy a make they are. (We’re both Kiwi expats living in Australia).
A la gorra se le da forma cosiéndola, pero las piezas de la visera son de una entretela firme o de plástico liviano (puedes usar una botella de refresco de 2 litros para cortar las formas) o un trozo de archivador de plástico.
Hi Marcy ... I did make two at a time when I was making them to sell. My younger self, who did not pay as much attention to detail, could make several in a day. Now, taking my time and sewing more for joy, I can make three in a day before I am distracted by a walk in the woods, video editing, answering emails etc. I can only produce three of any of my hats in a day now that I am semi retired.
Here you go Tony ... just select the correct paper size for your printer and then you can add the pattern to your cart. madcaphats.com/products/flat-cap-for-men-or-unisex-sewing-pattern-and-instructions-digital-format?variant=
They are coming from a company supported by Shopify so I will let them know but I did email you the files from our main computer just now. Thanks for letting me know and I will let Shopify know!
We don't sell paper patterns due to the cost of printing and shipping. Digital means you print at home and you can do that over and over! The pattern links are in the description for the video. We have a website and an Etsy shop that sell the digital multi size versions.
The link for the free version is in the video description. There is a full size paid version, two actually - one in 12 sizes and one in 4 sizes - those links should be in the video too but you can email me if you need help finding them at madcaphats@gmail.com Cheers, Tori
Check your printer settings. If it is fit to page instead of Actual or Custom 100% then the pattern will print too small. This pattern has been downloaded alot and the only reason for a smaller than expected hat is always at your printer and the settings for page size. Check the settings in your PDF program and make the printer settings from there. You can do a screen shot and email me at madcaphats@gmail.com if you want. I can better advise if I can see what you see!
This is not a good first project. It requires skill especially setting the visor in place so the top sits nicely over the visor. First sewing project definitely the headbands. Then the fleece toque. You will get there!! Cheers, Tori

Thank you! My Irish friend Kirei told me that is what she called hers growing up in Ireland. I will try to edit but likely can only get it off of the thumbnail but I will try! Tori

Prost, Tori
