Tuatara have often been referred to as living fossils, and it’s easy to understand why when you consider this Reptile once flourished around 200 million years ago. This baby predator, just hatched after 16 months will share its habitat with other survivors of the Jurassic age.

Every once in awhile these documentaries throw a curve at you. I remember them following around a newborn Praying Mantis as it slipped past predator after predator. It found itself standing in front of an adult mantis as the narrator spoke of how with time, and a little bit of luck, this young insect would grow up to be just as large as this adult. After which the adult mantis promptly scooped the youngster up and started to devour it as the narrator remarked 'then again... maybe not'.

How does a baby lizard just born recognise something as poisonous/dangerous, i'm curious as to the biological mechanics behind it. Did evolution simply weed out the ones that had a taste for the poisonous ones?
@Jetdot37
@Jetdot37 7 лет назад
GabrielKnightz inborn instincts, no different to me or you having a fear of water for what might be swimming below the surface.
@GabrielKnightz
@GabrielKnightz 7 лет назад
I get that but what creates it? It's not like there's an instinct gene, so how does it work. And sure staying away from something vast and unknown if fair enough but i still wouldn't know which berries/mushrooms/ leaves would be safe in a forest without some form of training.
@sirsmiles2770
@sirsmiles2770 7 лет назад
GabrielKnightz no but there is a gene which controls curiosity and fear and that comes into play
@Jetdot37
@Jetdot37 7 лет назад
Highly linked to the brains interpretation of a sensory stimulus, such as vision or smell. The Brain elicits a response via motor neurons causing skeletal muscles to be prepared for a sprint. Another mechanism Called the fight or flight response is involved (a sympathetic division of the Autonomic nervous system) which is decided by the Brain again; it involves suppressing digestion and mobilising fat/glucose in the case of a sprint response as we see here. So the lizard won't always run. If he has no senses (blind, couldn't smell, no hearing) he would basically have no response because his brain has no sensory stimulus. In insects it's similar except they aren't as intelligent and brains are poorly developed. So we see things like kinesis or taxis. Photokinesis is the response a cockroach would give.
@GabrielKnightz
@GabrielKnightz 7 лет назад
I understand, but it doesn't explain if that flight or flight response is inherit to a particular situation, a 'personality trait' of that One baby lizard or it's entire species and more importantly why.

I think they're super interesting to learn about. They are an ancient phylum that sort of bridges the gap between arthropods (insects, crustaceans, etc.) and annelids (segmented worms). Their bodies lacks any obvious features to give away their ancestry. They shoot sticky slime at predators and prey alike; a velvet worm may be over 10% slime by weight. Many species give live birth. They live in large groups with complex social hierarchies and war with surrounding groups for territory. Definitely not boring.
