This was very timely. Our beloved rooster died this week defending his flock, and we are having to incubate his first and last clutch, as the hens are not broody. Wish us luck!

thanks for the simple facts! Fresh food and water (non frozen) Daily!! Keep pine shavings in nest boxes for 'clean free' eggs. Have a caged run, open windows, vent in coop for ammonia in heat season :) put this on watch later.😉

I much prefer the R-Com as the best incubator. Same price range but better technology and ease of use. Has a small heating unit in the water reservoir. Recovers heat and humidity levels after opening within 1 minute. A group of my chicken friends did many different hatches and tried several methods of cleaning and found that using a cap full of bleach in a sink full of warm water to clean dirty eggs, rinsing with clean warm water, and drying them completely right before going into the incubator actually increased the hatch rates to 92% and produced healthy chicks. Especially useful during spring mud season when we usually do hatches and have to deal with dirty eggs.

I switched to brinsea incubators a few years ago when the cheap Chinese made incubator I was using glitched and cooked my chicks on hatch day. I have the ovation 56 ex and love it, I usually get 100% hatch rates. I use it as an incubator only and on day 18 I move the eggs to a hatcher. This not only keeps the incubator clean but allows me to set eggs every week in one incubator. This also means that I only need one brooder and the older chicks teach the younger ones to eat. Because new chicks are added every week there is no aggravation issues.

This was a great video! We are going to be hatching our own eggs for meat chickens next year. We have new egg layer chicks coming in July. Not trying to hatch for selling, just for us for consumption. We are 71 years old and are just trying to be as self-sufficient as possible. Thank you for such a detailed video explaining how to incubate, etc. This was just what we needed. We also checked out the new website and love it! Good job! We love you guys! God bless! ❤❤

You must have a good flock. We used to. We had one hen that would collect 30 eggs and go broody. She hatched, trained, and protected those chicks and part of the flock they became. It was incredible. Now, new flock, 20 years later, one hen goes broody and she jumps off the eggs when they begin hatching. Pure stupid apparently.😭

Yes yes yes.... Hatching eggs is not confusing or complicated with a Brindsi and I am not getting any thing from the company either. Like you I started with a cheaper one. What a pain in the #%*. Get a Brindsi and follow the instructions. My worst hatch with the brindsi was 80%. Often got 100% hatch. They can easily stay at room temp for 7 days. You guys do such great teaching videos. Kevin, I just needed a reminder and I watched one of your videos on making easy bread. Again a great video. Quail sure are cute and I wish you all the best with this lot.... I think the Chicks are not done hatching.. This is so exciting. 80 % is a good rate. American Bresse are wonderful.. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on a great chick hatch! They look great! I agree on keeping things simple. I've been raising chickens for 20+ years and finally decided I needed to stick with one breed of chicken, too. @saddleridge4364
@saddleridge4364 Год назад
yes, love the black australorps too. Especially those pretty brown eyes. Here's a little story: I had my chickens out free ranging with my Shepherd and I keeping watch. I was sitting on the grass, my dog was lying down next to me. One of the roosters decided he was in love with the black australorp. He came running at her with 'intentions' and she ran behind my dog and sat very close to him. Rooster changed his mind! LOL.

It took three full days for all of our chicks to hatch. The very last one’l to hatch was having trouble and we found that its intestines formed outside its body so other than that, we had a pretty good hatch rate this year. Way better than last year. Last year only two of 10 hatched. The others stopped developing and never got out of the egg. It’s been an interesting learning experience each spring.

I'm with you on keeping it simple, but I go one step further and dry hatch. No water at all. The humidity is usually 33-35% until the first egg hatches and then jumps to 70 all on it's own and maintains 50-70 while the rest of the eggs hatch. In my experience, this reduces the chance of shrink wrapping.
