When Jovier Sanchez and their husband relocated from New York City to Salem, Massachusetts, in 2015, everything seemed to be going perfectly. Their candle store was thriving, they enjoyed the support of the local LGBTQIA+ community and allies, and they were even starting to imagine living out the rest of their lives in Salem. Unfortunately, things took a turn in the wake of the 2016 elections: business plummeted, certain residents were becoming openly homophobic and they were even followed home at night. This change in atmosphere eventually hit a peak, resulting in their difficult decision to leave Salem. Thanks to the support of family and friends, and their own incredible resolve, Jovier and their partner were able to resettle back in New York City where they were truly able to make themselves feel more at home.
