When Jovier Sanchez and their husband relocated from New York City to Salem, Massachusetts, in 2015, everything seemed to be going perfectly. Their candle store was thriving, they enjoyed the support of the local LGBTQIA+ community and allies, and they were even starting to imagine living out the rest of their lives in Salem. Unfortunately, things took a turn in the wake of the 2016 elections: business plummeted, certain residents were becoming openly homophobic and they were even followed home at night. This change in atmosphere eventually hit a peak, resulting in their difficult decision to leave Salem. Thanks to the support of family and friends, and their own incredible resolve, Jovier and their partner were able to resettle back in New York City where they were truly able to make themselves feel more at home.

Yes, the hate that was generated in that year is spreading. We, in the LGBTQ community, are so aware of this reality. I am so glad family and friends of he and his husband, joined together to bring them back where they are safe. Our community has to band together. We must affirm an attack on one of us is an attack on ALL of us. Please be safe. Know who you can go to if you need help.

Oh you are so 100% right! An attack on one IS an attack on us all. "Back in the day" I was out demonstrating and marching for our rights. I had hoped, that by this age (not say what that is!!! COUGH) LOL that we could leave the work up to the youngns. Well, that isn't happening. Those of us with experience in this bigoted BS are rising up again to fight back in an even bigger way.

you are correct in that the behavior of a few politicians and courts has emboldened a fabric of radicalism in this nation from anti abortion policies to anti woke policies. past political leaders at any level would have never stood for this current radicalism that is going on but as the saying goes when the going gets tough the tough get going. for many of us we will not be intimidated by those who choose to hate us for no good reason. and for those who are more in search for a safe environment moving somewhere else for that reason alone will always be acceptable.

I was afraid of hearing a not so happy ending to your story and I’m relieved to know you made it back to NY safely. A shame people just cannot let others be and tend to their own lives.

OH I KNOW exactly what you were thinking. i suspect many may have thought the same. Torch Song Trilogy comes to mind! Years ago, I did a police training video on tolerance and our community. It was one of the more difficult projects I had, due to THAT SCENE. I'm so happy this was not the case and these two amazing members of our community are ok.

I am shocked to hear that this happened in Massachusetts. You moved to a place that attracted Trans and Nonbinary folks. That says something about the acceptance in the area. To hear how a place that is so accepting could turn night and day is terrifying, quite frankly. Thank you for sharing. It now makes sense that I am feeling edges of the same intolerance in a place that I moved to because of it's tolerance.

Jovier, my heart broke to hear your story. I'm so relieved and happy that you both decided to get out of that homophobic state. I don't know where, in New York state you are, but if I and hubby every run into you, don't be surprised if you get 2 big 'ole tight hugs. LOL Yeah, we're both huggers. Hubby is Latino, so you know that come with the territory. LOL Please, both of you stay well. For now, sending big 'ole virtual hugs... LOL 🤗🦄

I live in Salem Mass so your story is especially disturbing to me and i apologize on behalf of my town. Salem has been a pretty LGBTQ+ -friendly place. My daughters (now 20 and 25) grew up here w two moms, no issues. Given what you experienced here, i hate to think what kind of Trump-spawned hate is going on in towns around the country that were not so good to begin with.

*LOVE* to our community. I just watched "The Naked Civil Servant," a biographical comedy-drama about Quentin Crisp and all his interviews, I recommend it to anyone feel sad and lonely.

I understand so well how he felt and deciding to move to where they would feel safe. You can’t put a price on personal safety. I moved out of the states altogether, first from Chicago in 2015, then to New Orleans which I left in 2020 and eventually to Mexico that same year where I am still living. I’m a black transgender woman retired on social security, so with those three intersections there was really no where else I could go in the states where I could afford, be safe and get medical care (which is big if you’re trans). So yes, if you have to move do it and also moving to another country isn’t as hard as you might think. Everyone be safe and take care!

You ARE POWERFUL! What you went through is not easy. But I'd bet that succeeding as you have, you must have a very deep feeling of satisfaction and happiness. I believe that your story will be inspirational to others. I'm also an example of doing what you have to do to stay safe, stay well and take control of one's life. NOT allowing ID10TS to control us anymore! I always let people know about project, "t Gets Better" and how, life really does get better, especially when we kick fear in the arse and take control. Or, as I'm known to say, "Honey! Just throw your tits into the wind and walk forward!" SUPER HUGS.... Be well

I had the same sense, that after Trump was elected, the haters felt empowered. Some people suggested I was over reacting but by now we know how the Trump cult is.

What’s a sad world we live in when we can’t respect those who love. It used to be respect your neighbours and just enjoy life. Help one another and be happy. Those who feel they have to denigrate others to feel more important or “powerful” are cowards. I am so glad you are safe and happy. 🇨🇦

So glad you & your husband had such supportive family and friends to help you through this challenging experience... But I'm so sorry you had to upend your lives, close your shop and make such a big shift just to get back to somewhere sane!! Really grateful it was financially and logistically possible for you, but can only imagine the emotional wrench after finally building up your own business 😭 Heartbreaking to hear how unsafe most of our USA rainbow peers are feeling in their home communities, esp. after the past half-decade of political shifts in America have emboldened haters and threatened or rolled back hard-won human rights? I swear, there's been SO many times these past years I've felt like we should just be offering y'all blanket refugee asylum here in NZ 🙈 (where things are not perfect by ANY stretch, but not yet so dangerously polarised...) Wishing you the very best in whatever the future brings, and hoping you are both feeling safe and accepted in your new neighbourhood.
