The Bowler (called a derby in the US) was the most popular cowboy hat in the old west. It had good utility for work, and looked good when dressed up in town. Hat kept out the rain and sun, and kept in the body heat.

@ArizonaGhostriders Год назад
Not so much down here in the Southwest. The brim didn't do a lot of good keeping the sun out. Larger brims were the key, here. However, in town it was the perfect hat, and very common.

As you probably know the Derby, or Bowler hat, originated as the head wear for the bailiff's who were local police for large British country estates in the 19th century. The were worn to protected the head while riding in case they had a collision with tree branches while on the look out for poachers.

Hey Santee, got another quick question, I sent you a tweet about this but I'm not sure you saw. I've got a Civil War US Cavalry hat I love wearing, and it has one side of the brim pinned to the crown of the hat. Now I was thinking of getting another one, but without the emblems and cord for my Deputy Character to replace his Well worn bowler hat (whihc I also wear in RL so she's in dire need of replacement) but I don't know if Civilians did the same thing, pinning one side of the brim to the corwn, as I know that in the army they used ot do that to make sure their hat wasn't in the way of their gun.
@ArizonaGhostriders

The natives of South America were totally dependent upon the nutria for food, but the Pope said they must eat fish on Friday. Charley Russel and Fredrick Remmington painted cowboys with a very wide brim and a high crown and a light color what were these toppers and why black in the southwest there wasn't any air conditioning and it does get warm even in October......

It does get warm. Black was a classy color. Not seen a lot on cowboys but on society folks.

This is the kind of stuff that no one thinks about. The kind of stuff that would trip up time travelers... "Sure, he's got that nifty lay-zar gun but he's so dumb he doesn't even have the sense to wear a proper hat!" /;-)

I love your shows, however i only wish they were not so darn short. I really think that you could do so much more if you were to put more imagination In your content. Just a suggestion, and thanks for listening. The Kilted Vagabond.

Everyone likes to mention that the Stetson "Boss of the Plains" was made from beaver fur. In reality it was made from Nutria, which, if you have ever seen one, bears no resemblance to a beaver. It's a type of giant water rat. So essentially, as good as an original Stetson is, it's still made from rat fur. Just a thought.
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 4 года назад
Actually, it wasn't until 1900 that they started using Nutria. So, the originals, from what I can tell, are beaver.
