Disclaimer: Robin Hamilton hosts this half-hour special which profiles Hattie McDaniel, the first African America actress who won an academy award for her role in Gone With the Wind. Hattie McDaniel played "Mammy" as a loving survivor, more conscious of decency and standards than any of the whites in "GWTW." It's a performance that evokes laughter and tears.

They absolutely should replace her award, she deserved the true one. They should recognize all she was able to accomplish even in those times. If it was stolen or destroyed out of ill will, that's even more reason to replace it. They should, under NO circumstances, EVER give it back to Howard university. She entrusted this piece of her legacy to them and they let her down. They were letting students touch it?! Then to top it all off they deny she ever gave it to them, in the face of everyone on the planet that knows she did. They should be ashamed of themselves! They should never be allowed to have that honor again. Replace it, but replace it to a more trustworthy establishment. >:o

That man would have destroyed an award that ,that woman had to fight to get? What an ass.,what other roles does he think she could have played?He obviously doesn't understand how things worked in Hollywood back then and what is bad about being a maid? There is no shame in it.

He thinks $ 700.00 dollars a week was not good money; but Hattie was paid the same as the other supporting actresses. Clark Cable probably didn't make a whole lot more. There not smart enough to research things. They are comparing it to today's over paid celebs. She had a beautiful home in a white neighborhood. It was one of the house I saw on a tour of stars homes. Clark Gabe's was about the same size.

@Frannie Ladner That’s Lucifer chasing the idolatry of money. This man would not know the differences no matter what time frame we are in. Ms. Mc Daniels has said “I’d rather play a maid at $700.00 than get paid as one working for $7.00 an hour. The fact that Ms. Mc Daniels was paid the same monetarily as her “white” counterparts IS HUGE 🤯. Economic disparity was not experienced by Ms. McDaniels. But it was in the black community. Ask black actors today about pay scale compared with their contemporaries. It’s a totally different money 💵 💰 game today 🤷🏽‍♀️

She may have portrayed a lowly maid but she acted everyone else off the screen. It’s ridiculous to say her award is an a front to people of colour. If a white man was awarded an Oscar for playing Judas, would there be uproar? Hattie was an amazing and incredible person and actress. Long may her name and work live in our memory.

I completely agree. I rolled my eyes to the ceiling when they said "she won by playing a role that 'demeans' black people." They absolutely missed the point. You don't win for what roles you play, you win for how you play them. And from what little I've seen of her (though, changing that now), every scene I've seen shows she's a woman which charisma, likability even when stern and passion in her roles. Basically everything I assume her detractors lacked themselves and incapable of recognizing.

I am not understanding some of these problems with Hattie McDaniel who was playing a "pretend" character of the civil war era. No one walked away liking Scarlett but everyone love Hatties' portrayal of "mammie" a true word used in that era in the south but it's a "role" not her life. Here is the REAL Hattie I saw in another interview...after she won, first in the history of a black actress,: who attacked her then was not fellow black people or non blacks but the POLITICAL NAACP. Mr. White was president of the national NAACP and he rambled about these roles black folks were reduced to. Sadly he had no interest that most of ALL America was impoverished by the great depression and work was hard to find for anyone. However, Hattie was no shy violet...she lashed out at what he said and stated, " I would rather play a maid that have to be one" and "what does Mr. White know anyway he is only one third black." Hattie was a true American and to this day we know Hatties name NOT Mr. Ignorant White.....Class stand out and sustains.

Sa-ad El-Amin, the Protest Leader of the students at Howard University in the late 1960's, makes a rather silly fool of himself in his foolish and ill-conceived notion that (the great) Hattie McDaniel demeaned people of African descent by playing the role of Mammy. History states clearly that some black women, in the servant role foisted upon them, had to serve that population as their Mammy. It's a fact. They did. HOWEVER, a fair share of them more than likely were more important to their Scarlett O'Hara's then their own mothers had been. Miss McDaniel brought majesty to her part, playing it truthfully. A true representation of a type of personage that did in fact exist in those old and dead days. You can't re-write history. It happened. The shame of it is not that she demeaned anybody but was demeaned by the times of those days - in that she had to sit at the far end of the theater on the evening of the awards. So that man is fool - and apparently event though he is 50 years older, still is. More power to McDaniel. See her beautiful comedic moments in "Alice Adams" and "Show Boat" and "Saratoga" and her dramatic moments in "In This Our Life" - holding more than her own with Katharine Hepburn and Irene Dunne and Jean Harlow and Bette Davis. She made you laugh out loud and cry out loud.
@annnee6818
@annnee6818 8 лет назад
I agree with you, I didn't at all think Hattie demeaned anybody. I found the film offensive for today's standards, but this had nothing to do with the actors but the script (and the book). Hattie McDaniel's role is not offensive to me. She's forceful, smart and kind. What's wrong with that? The part I have much more of a problem with is Prissy. She makes me cringe every time she is on screen. Again, nothing to do with the actress but the part.

Miss Hattie's personality of a kind, caring and loving person I thought always shined through in her smile and her eyes. I never knew her personally but it seemed so much of herself came across in the film roles she portrayed. She played humble yet strong women and I could see that. From what I could see through her performances in films, she persevered and she accomplished more than other black women of her time. It is sad too that even in her death that she was discriminated against and that is so wrong. She was a good woman. I will always remember her character, her voice, her smile and her personality. There will never be another Hattie McDaniel.

But she said I will play the hell out of this roll and make everyone remember me. As well as being a trail blazer for her people. Look at all the black actresses today who she blazed a trail for. I am so livid over that fool saying he would have destroyed Ms. Mc Daniels' Academy Award!!! That statement was so IGNORANT it left me speechless. That is equivalent to spitting on this great woman's grave or her memorial at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Who in the hell does this jack-ass think he is??? That statement was just plain rude and beyond DISRESPECTFUL. He should be ashamed of himself!!!!!!!

17:49 wow .... this dude!! I hear some of what he is saying and basically he is saying she fit that stereotype, therefore it wasnt acting, therefore she didnt deserve the award and therefore, had he known he had access, he would have ripped it up. Get over yourself. YOU say she wasnt really acting but who are u to tear up everything she accomplished on her own in a "world" that typically would have viewed her as less than She clearly earned her way in to our hearts harder than most RESPECT HER. ugh .... get out of your hive mindset Having the same skin color as her does not give u the right to be freshly offended by offenses SHE endured ... Some of u think u know what she endured and u only lessen the impact of the determination she had to rise above .... how dare u use her tribulations to cry 'foul, im the victim" ... she (not all of u) faced them herself already and she did it without u there to help her. This is a HUGE problem that BLM bullies ppl from talking about ..... the hive mind thing infecting some of the americans who are black ..... you dont get to suffer for other ppl and rewrite their legacy in order to excuse yourself from addressing the real source of your insecurity. sighs ...... rip hattie: you were the embodiment of what it is to be american. I will never forget all your hard work and accomplishments You are an inspiration to many of all colors. 💞 Ps hattie, wish u would have left in the hands of white ppl to pasd down to the world, for all americans who are black to be able to hold. Just sayin.

I don't understand why blacks would be outraged regarding Hattie playing a maid when those were the only rolls offered in order to be in a blockbuster movie then, and she humbled herself and made a name for herself! . What blacks should be appalled about is how Monique, rappers who really belong to gangs and the thugs in show business today or the losers who fill the prisons everywhere because they wanted easy money but didn't want to conduct themselves morally or ethically as people to really be proud of in life! Even Monique messed up her chances at being a star because she chose to use filthy language all the time as a norm and her bad attitude always playing the victim in life. Well Hollywood is getting fed up with people like her and now even she cant get work anymore! She did it to herself. You all should be proud of Hattie because she had moral values in her personal life and realized that there are no small parts in movies....There are only small actors! If Hattie looked down at Monique she would not be happy with her at all!

You really sound stupid. Maids and slaves were not the only roles blacks should have been giving.In reality what amerikkka don’t what people to no is that Blacks were also successful not just slaves and maids. Do your freaking research 🙄🤨
