I love this legend. I played Kurangaituku, the bird woman in a school play back in the early 80's. I was the tellest and skinniest kid in school. Awesome memories
American here, found this video after seeing the music video for the song Hatupatu by Alien Weaponry. It was such a cool song and music video that it made me want to learn about this legend, and I instantly recognized "matiti, matata" from the song as soon as the presenter said it in the video. So cool, love this

Hineingoingo wasn't a bird woman. Kurangaituku is the name of the whatukura.... her bird-like feathered cloak that adorned her body. There's one story Te Arawa of the area and the out of area story of Raukawa.
Is cool how the Maori came all the way here in canoes from the Philippines stopping in different places on the way. Have you ever thought going to the Philippines and meet the indigenous Maori left there I have
Oh yes. How wonderful the maori people are. Let us bless them. Let is hold them up high and show the world how great the are. News headline from the Rotorua Daily Post newspaper: " Child, 2, dies after Rotorua driveway accident, family member steals from doctor trying to save child's life" As hospital staff tried to save the life of a 2-year-old boy run over in a Rotorua driveway, a family member swiped a doctor's two phones and a bank card and went on a spending spree. The child died a short time later but Melissa Herewini (A MAORI) had already taken the bank card to four stores in Rotorua and bought alcohol, food, petrol, phone credit and cigarettes.
When I lived in Atiamuri in NZ not far from Hutu and my brother and his two friends stole money from Hutu . . . And I know your dying to ask me if they got bad luck WELL HELL YEAH the 1st friend got a broken arm the 2nd friend got a broken leg and my brother must of stole the most as he got third degree burns over his body and a 2hr trip to the nearest hospital so BELIEVE IT
Good noticing there! That rock has been removed, along with all the other sister rocks nearby. An act of vandalism. Hatupatu's Rock, sacred as it may be, was actually the protector of the surrounding rocks, which were even more sacred. It was often the victim of attacks such as having paint splashed over it, or potato water. Maori's believe that you can remove the tapu from a rock or structure by throwing food at it. One reason why strangers were fed as soon as they arrived. It can take up to 3 days for a tohunga to get his powers back after eating certain foods. Hense this rock protected the others by taking the damage. I guess that after the car accidents, Maori wanted to remove any tapu that may have been effecting the public! This is why many sacred areas are not promoted to the public. If you are sensitive enough, you can find it. Just a hint, many sacred areas are on crown owned land. There was a quiet movement years ago to protect them from too much damage. In this case the local council obviously did not talk to the Maori about landscaping the site!
I don't know if this is a variant of the same story or another completely different one , but it involves a guy hiding inside a large stone from a fire Maiden / Goddess who he tricked into pulling out her finger nails from which fire came .
