My grandfather, Calvin August Schaefer, was a waist gunner on the Strawberry Bitch. The waist gunner opposite side was shot and killed right in front of him. And he delivered the news of either that death or the belly gunner to his family personally. I don't know too much about his war stories and combat, but I REALLY want to see this plane in person.

Oh wow! I can’t even imagine having experienced that and then having to give that awful news to the family. You ABSOLUTELY have to get to the museum and visit that plane. I’ll have a new appreciation for the Strawberry Bitch the next time I’m there and I’ll remember your story.

Hey Calvin would love to hear more about your grandfather and this mission that this took place. I'm working on a project for the Strawberry Bitch. Thank you for your time.

I hope you get or got to see her. I never knew anybody got killed on her during a mission. I grew up a few miles from the museum and was fortunate enough to get to see her several times a year throughout my life. I have pictures of her without her wings being rolled through the streets that my grandpa took when the museum moved from Fairborne, Oh to Riverside, Oh (Dayton) where she now resides. One night when i was young (12, 13, 14 years old, I don't know) i decided to slip away from my mom at the night movie for base employees and took a little tour of the museum after hours. The experience was ghostly to say the least but i saw no ghost's and security never asked me to leave. One of my favorite memories. Thank you grandpa Schaefer for your service and thank you sir for the story!

Very interesting ghost stories. Thanks for sharing. My father was a B-24 instructor pilot stationed at Maxwell Field in Montgomery, Alabama. Apparently, when the ball turret gunner was killed, the Strawberry Bitch was flown to Maxwell Field, where the ball turret was replaced. My father and a couple of his students ferried Strawberry Bitch back to Benghasi, Libya in North Africa so it could be reunited with its assigned crew and continue its combat career. The round opening in the belly shown in the video is where the ball turret is located. It can be raised or lowered from the fuselage. As for the Black Maria, I knew the pilot of that helicopter. He and I use to volunteer at the museum. He had some interesting stories. He flew a lot of black ops in that bird for the CIA. He later went from flying the Black Maria to flying the SR-71 Blackbird.

That is awesome! Thanks for sharing. Would love to hear some of those Black Maria stories!

The ball turret statistically speaking is the safest position on the aircraft. The nose, tail gunner, pilots , waist and radio operator were more vulnerable to attack than the ball turret gunner.

I guess that makes sense. Majority of air-to-air fire wouldn't be from below.

There was a B24 in the 15th AF, named Three Feathers, she flew through the war going through 3 crews and 165 missions. The last crew was anxious to fly her back to the states but the Army said she was not airworthy and chopped her up - there were no KIA during any of those missions. When the crew was told she was not going home , they were told they had been reassigned to fly a D model back they couldn't believe it - the plane was Strawberry Bitch still with her desert pink camo . The first crew of Three Feathers lost three engines enroute to Africa and made an emergency landing on St Lucia a Coast Guard station in the Caribbean. On board was a squadron commander for the 451st BG, my father. So by a few degrees of connection I am related to Strawberry Bitch and those ghost on her are from three crews that flew Three Feathers. She was angry that she was shredded and sacrificed for Strawberry Bitch. The Lady Be Good that crashed in Africa was also haunted, all parts salvaged from the wreck were put in other aircraft that also crashed.

I went here for the first time when I was about 9 and had no clue of anything paranormal. I remember seeing someone waving at me from inside the cockpit of an aircraft. Although the figure appeared just like the other pilot mannequins, this one literally waved and had such a jovial smile/expression on his face it was beyond eerie. I never told a single soul about this until now and even as a child I was not afraid so much as curious. Maybe a bit creepy, but in a good way. Although I haven't had anymore experiences, I've been Natura attracted and drawn in by this place.

I imagine with all the history, there HAS to be a few ghosts walking around in there! I remember reading that some of the ball turrets in earlier models could only be accessed through the outside and the operator couldn't open it to bail in an emergency. Plus, your only protection from bullets and flak is a 1 inch piece of acrylic. 😮 Yeah, there's definitely ghosts there!!! 👻

I've seen some of those old ball turrets. Couldn't imagine just being locked into that hamster ball until the fighting was done!

A little interesting fact, b-24 bombers were able to raise the the ball turret unlike the b-17s

Just visited today with my family. Great to see a video on The National Museum of the US Air Force. I mentioned to my husband a few of the planes there are said to be haunted as I read it somewhere, some time ago. I heard of the B-24D Liberator having activity reported, but wasn’t sure which others. Great video explaining the backstories. I enjoyed this video and you have a new Sub :)

After the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum neglected the Enola Gay to the point it had to be dismantled for display the USAF will never give an important/historical aircraft to them again. Brocks Car is almost flyable and with the proper group of people could be made flyable. If you want to see military aircraft go to Dayton Ohio Wright Patterson AFB and it's free.

Didn't know the Smithsonian did that to the Enola Gay. Definitely agree that the Air Force Museum is the place to be!

That was it you found it... The ball turret on a B-24 was retractable. A B-17s was not.
