Halloween 2020 is almost done! But we have one last song to go and - just like the vast majority of songs I've posted to this channel - this is one of my favourites.
I love how sombre this song is. I love how the intro includes these thunderstorm sounds while the guitar warms up - in my head the singer as a wandering nomad. No matter where his home was, he no longer associates with It - ripped apart by the world that still haunts him. A world that has damaged, hurt and broke him. A world that... I've been through. A world that I'm sure most of us have been through. What was yours? What world took the joy from your veins? What world replaced - or forced you to replace them - with cynicism? With resentment? With mistrust?
I can't help but create our character whenever I listen to this song. I just substitute my world with one I think would work.
I really like what I did with the lyrics. In most of them that I've seen they've never stylized the "You're X? So am I." the way I have. I like the subtle aggressiveness that question mark adds. "I'm well aware of your pain. You gave it to me. You may have forgotten, but I haven't."
I went back to Scarecrow for these vocals for the same reason I used them for Would; why not mix someone talking about being broken with an effectively broken font. As for the background, again I went with the easy visual pun. The major idea repeated is about a world so let's use a picture of the world - especially for this "four classical elements" vibe. I can see an argument with clouds for this one to further highlight the rain in the beginning but I think this works just as well.
