STORY:
In 1905, wealthy mining magnate Chester Condon began building the Glensheen Historic Estate, a 39-room mansion on a 22-acre estate located in Duluth, Minnesota. Chester died in 1916, and his wife Clara many years later in 1950. In the end, the only remaining daughter, Elisabeth Congdon, inherited the entire family estate.
On June 27, 1977 at 3:00am, Elisabeth and her nurse Velma Pietila were found dead. Elisabeth was found suffocated with a satin pillow in her bed. Velma, who was lying on the main stairwell landing window seat, had been beaten to death with a candlestick. The motive was initially unclear because few valuables were looted from the room.
So attention immediately shifted to Elisabeth's adopted daughter Marjorie, the black sheep of the family, who was to receive $8 million at the time of her mother's death.
THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

🛑ALERT - I added NO music to this episode. The music you hear is simply playing in the background within the mansion. If you go there, you will hear that playing throughout.

I took a tour of the Congdon Mansion when I was last in Duluth in 2014. As a visitor from out of state, I really knew nothing about the murders before the tour began. I was just looking forward to viewing the mansion and grounds. I love touring old homes preserved from that bygone era, and this one is quite lovely, so I am glad you showed a little of that before focusing on the killings.

The Glensheen Mansion was amazing (haunted or not!!!) The caretakers have truly preserved the ambiance of the 1920s. Crazy how Elizabeth and Velma were both murdered. Hard to believe Marjorie still alive and in Arizona. Great story telling, as always, Ron!

The June 28, 1977 page 1 article of the Minneapolis Tribune stated that Elisabeth was found in a bedroom on the second floor, across the hall from Valma’s bedroom. Although it isn’t explicitly stated, the article implies that Elisabeth was in her own bedroom. The Minneapolis Star on June 28, page 1, reported that Congdon was suffocated “in her own bed.”

The Mansion history…. It is gorgeous and with each season you get to feel how the Congdon celebrated. Yes, the one adopted daughter is imbalanced..so sad. But the rest left a great legacy in Duluth and Washington… and with future generations that are still living.

Chester Congdon had a Great Lakes freighter named after him. The Chester A. Congdon was built as the Salt Lake City in 1907. She was renamed in 1912 after changing hands twice. She sank on November 6, 1918 near Isle Royale after running aground on a reef ( now known as Congdon Reef) in a fog while hauling a cargo of 380,000 bushels of wheat. No lives were lost, and about 50,000 bushels of the cargo was salvaged. She is now Isle Royale's third most dived wreck, behind the bulk freighter Emperor (1947) and the excursion steamer America (1928) respectively.

My cousin lives in Duluth and I live about 3 hours away. As soon as they opened the place up for tours we went. At the time they were guided tours only and they would NOT tell you which room but after watching a lot of the news reports you could figure out it was the room with the flowered wall paper. The room you showed. At the time the guides would not even talk about the actual murders. The long hallway where the kids would play was pretty interesting as well as the boathouse down by the lake. Someone else posted it was a botched investigation and that is true!

Thank you for doing this story. I was born in Duluth and this story has stuck with me my entire life. My sister got married and had her reception at Glenn Sheen . One of the staff actually offered my brother in law a chance to go ghost hunting in the attic. I’m very protective of this place and hope it’s around forever. The staff at one point weren’t allowed to talk about the murders until many years back. Did you get to visit the cemetery on the side of the house?

I'm sure someone else has posted but for newcomers who don't want to scroll back... "I Sing" is probably a reference to a beloved hymn, "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" in the chorus. I remember the sitz baths cause back in 1984 I had my first born when I was 16. The nurse took me down the hall to this little closet room and I would sit in a sitz bath for my stitches from the episiotomy. Look that word up and you'll know what I went through. But mine was rips and cuts all inside and out. I was in so much pain they gave me a morphine sucker!! They don't give those out too much. I went home with some. But anyway, I was going through a lot and they gave me stuff for a sitz bath in my home too. I think it was a few bath salts. It hurt so bad I never tried to do it again. Lol! It's a good thing Marjorie was adopted! She may be living with a person who doesn't know this about her!! Great story! I loved this one! 💖☕ Take care and put a coat on next time! Ron, I along with many truly appreciate your wonderful narration of these perhaps little known stories. I've commented before mentioning my chagrin with those of a younger generation who don't watch TV news or read a newspaper by which I don't mean a small town or county newspaper. Life many years ago was a rich patchwork of happy and sad, politics and education, art and architecture and most important I believe, the written word. Each of those components of life is still vibrant but life doesn't always bring it to you. It is curiosity, hunger for information, keen intellect, an open mind and the willingness to tolerate disparit opinions that result in a strong immersion in life of the present and the past. Well sorry about the soap box. I'm 74 and rue the future. Thanks again Ron. Oh one last point. Are you familiar with all the layers of actions during the World's Fair in Chicago? For instance after construction was complete a young architect was no longer needed and was fired. And who was that architect? Frank Lloyd Wright.

Thank you for sharing this story as well as the tour through the Glensheen Mansion. Amazing how the mansion is still furnished in the style of the time. Have a nice week!!

What a lovely old mansion! Watched this twice in order to go through those rooms again to ogle the items and personal effects. The stained glass accents are beautiful! It's a sad story of course and shook my head, just to thinking how Elisabeth adopted this girl only by to suffer an untimely , horrifying end because of it. Thanks for showing us this mansion prior to your trip to the cemetery. May Elisabeth rest in peace.
