They are usually absent, and when they are in the story at all, they are depicted as disposable or inept. This trailer in particular is getting some heat from both sides of the aisle as it portrays a broken family, which is black, where the father is stereotypically missing. Many continue to question Disney's motives in making these decisions as it sells itself as a family first company. While I do see where some of the criticism is coming from, in most instances the father character is less than virtuous, or missing, as a plot device to drive a character, usually the child, and motivate their actions. Also, most of Disney's work is either loosely, or directly, based on historical works. For example, the relationship between Scar and Mufasa is straight from Shakespeare (Hamlet).
